Road to AFC East runs through....
thewildrabbit replied to DrFishfinder's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
ROFL, so true Considering Porter played part time last season and got 17.5 sacks, now he has Jason Taylor at DE with him on D and not some unknown scrub. The Dolphins D will be better this season. Not to mention Pat White, the prototypical Wildcat QB in there to help run that offense. The Dolphins O should be better this season. Has Jauron EVER beaten the Patriots.... NO! 56-10 ring any bells? A healthy Tom Brady and Randy Moss, Wes Welker make me wanna -
It certainly looked to me that Maybin has a higher probability of turning out to be a bust, but then his upside can be better with that first step he has, the old adage "you can't teach speed". Maybin only has one move ATM and that is running the arc untouched, once a linemen gets his hands into him he is done. So he has a good deal to learn about being an NFL DE, and an enormous amount about to learn about the OLB position should the Bills want to use him as such or drop him into coverage. I'd be willing to bet that the coaches talked with Poz about Maybin and then came to the conclusion that Maybin was the better pick over the "Rak". From my limited view I'd have drafted Orakpo, the guy looks like a monster, but then I'm just a fan

Where the Bills are Still the Weakest .....
thewildrabbit replied to Kenwick's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Again we disagree, The Bills flopping in 05 was because they let Bledsoe go, the guy had a rocket arm but was plagued with immobility. Oddly enough JP was brought in to counter that situation and yet they forced him to stay in a pocket that never lasted very long and JP developed into another Bledsoe. The Bills O line never gave Bledsoe or JP the protection they needed, ever! We as fans thought that JP was brought in because of his superb athleticism, and he would be used to roll out and scramble, instead they force him to stay in a constantly collapsing pocket to throw. Go look at that 2006 roster, the bills had some good players, I'd be willing to bet that the FO thought they had a good enough team in 06 to make the playoffs. If anything it is the fact that Jauron hasn't been able to beat the Patriots, In 06 they won 2 of 6 in the division which will never get a team into the playoffs. Turn that number around and the bills go 11-5 if they win 4 of 6 in the division. The Bill went on a tear the second half of 06 beating the Packers, Texans and Jags while, They played the colts with Payton Manning at INDY and lost 16-17. Keeping that vaunted Colts offense to 17 pts They lost at home to the Chargers 21-24 In week 14 they beat the Jets 31-13 In week 15 they pounded the Dolphins 21-0 If I recall correctly they played Tennessee at home in week 16 for a shot at the playoffs and lost that game 29-30. Then lost at Baltimore 7-19 for the final game. The Bills could have easily been 10-6 that year if they get some breaks There were very high expectations of JP going into the 07 season and rightly so as he played very well in the latter part of 06 without a decent running attack. -

You are quite right, I had forgotten about that 5-11 season where Mularkey kept pulling JP in and out for Kelly Holcomb, the Bills still managed to beat the Jets and Dolphins once each though Pulling JP in and out of games ruined the kids confidence and basically Mularkey screwed himself out of a job. Didn't he start calling offensive plays during that season and demote the OC, who was then fired right after the season ended? They didn't have a decent DT because they didn't want to pay Pat Williams and let him go to the Vikings in the off season between 04-05 It was the year before in 2004, where if the Bills manage to beat the Steelers backup players in that last game of the season they make the playoffs, the Steelers rested the starters and backup unknown Willie Parker steps up to tear the Bills a new one. So they were one game away in 04 and bombed in 05. Still, that team had some very good players on it. So they were one year removed from "on the verge". So I disagree on your last statement that "it lacked a foundation upon which a playoff team could be built". The Bills were 7-9 previous to 05 and went 7-9 after 05 and JP actually had a very good year and it was thought he would have a breakout season in 07, till they drafted Edwards and JP is looking over his shoulder again. The bills still had McGahee and Moulds along with Lee Evans in 05. -
Jason Peters Pass-Blocking Skills
thewildrabbit replied to bourbonboy's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
After reading articles from various football sports writers my take is that basically there was no way RW was going to pay Peters the money he was asking for, 5-6 million maybe, not 11 million. Well Philly gave the guy what he wanted and lets see what he does this season, I think he will exceed their expectations. The Bills found him, taught him and brought him along over the last few years and trained him until was regarded as one of the top LT's in the NFL, then they trade him away. Nate Clements, Antoine Winfield, Jason Peters, Ruben Brown, it seems like every time a Bills player has become elite at his position the last 10 years he ends up leaving Buffalo. It is almost like the bills are getting to be a farm club for other teams. This reminds me of exactly the same thing that happened with Pat Williams, another free agent find turned star, who went to the Vikings after the Bills refused to pay him what he was worth. sadly the Bills defensive line has never been the same against the run since he left. You can call him fatty and whatever slur you can think of, but he is the one laughing all the way to the bank and Bills fans have been crying ever since his departure. -
Jason Peters Pass-Blocking Skills
thewildrabbit replied to bourbonboy's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
When I read the sour grapes posts by other Bills fans it makes me feel embarrassed to be a Bills fan. Personally, I don't blame Peters for wanting more money, the average life span of an NFL player is 3 years and they need to get as much as they can while they can because they never know if a career ending injury will happen in the next game. Not only that if RW isn't going to pay what a player is worth when they are considered one of the best at their position... again I don't blame him for leaving. Bill O line coach Jim McNally was a very highly regarded coach in the NFL before he retired, he took a free agent TE and turned him into a 2x pro bowl tackle and compared him to legendary Bengal tackle Anthony Munoz. When is the last time you saw that happen? Did any of you take a moment to consider that McNally retired last off season and Jauron promoted an unknown to coach the O line, and that new coach didn't get the job done? The entire line stunk last season, not just Peters who missed all the OTA's and training camp. I can recall Kris Jenkins caving in 3 blockers and still getting to the QB, both guards and the center tried to block him and couldn't get it done. Andy Reid stated he thinks JP is the best left tackle in the NFL, we will see if he is right. It wouldn't surprise me to see Peters make the pro bowl again this next season as an Eagle. Anyone think any Buffalo Bill O linemen will be going to the pro bowl this season ? -

The # 1 weakest area is undoubtedly the O line with 2 rookies slated to start at guard and a back up FA at center, still no positive idea on exactly who will start at RT. Talk about rebuilding, you expect to see moves like this on a 0-16 team like the Lions, and not a team that just went 7-9 the last 3 years, very disappointing. The #2 weakest area is the O line coach IMO, he replaced one of the best O line coaches in the NFL in Jim McNally. Jim M likened Jason Peters to Anthony Munoz. Once he left the team and they promoted an unknown to line coach the play dropped sharply from the entire line, but fans and coaches blame it on the players. Nevertheless, the new line coach failed to get maximum effort out of veterans. The #3 weakest area is the offensive coordinator, this is a guy who was a back up QB for 10 years and yet he failed to understand that when your RB is tearing the opponent a new one by rushing for amazing yards... you don't stop using him and constantly throw the ball with a back up QB in the game, just unbelievably moronic. The #4 weakest area is the head coach. Jauron inherited a team that was on the verge of playoffs and started rebuilding it his way. Tampa 2 (which I can't stand) and installed a Mike Martz offense with Steve Fairchild. Both of those schemes have faded from the all other teams and only the Bills still run the Tampa 2, the bend but don't break defense that Tom Brady tears up every time he faces it. I want the Bills to win and actually be competitive in the division, last year they were swept in the division and I just can't see them beating anyone other then the Jets maybe once. Perhaps next season RW will face the reality of what he has on the sidelines and make a move for a name coach that will actually teach the team how to win. -
Six consecutive years where you just plain suck on offense
thewildrabbit replied to LGB's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
What really bothers me is the mentality at TBD that people forget that Jauron didn't inherit a scrub lions team that was 0-16. What he stepped into was a decent team on the verge of making the playoffs. A really good coach and staff could have taken this team to the playoffs in three years. All he has done so far is torn down and rebuilt almost everything, and has had very little success in doing so. This franchise won't ever succeed with Jauron as HC and Schonert as OC, period -

You missed the entire point, God doesn't wear a Bills uniform, not with this coaching staff, and even if he did he would fail behind the O line Jauron is putting on the field this season. So you be certain to go to your synagogue / church and get on your knees and pray to your God or god, that Trent Edwards doesn't get sacrificed or crucified this season. In my earlier post, God was the QB, Jesus was the RB, get it right. -
Rotoworld Speculating That Ray Rice Will Be

LeRon McClain Was a huge force in Cam Cameron's ball control offense last year, he will probably see the ball more then Rice or McGahee. -

thewildrabbit replied to LGB's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
God was out for the season last year, but he should be back and throwing to Randy Moss and Wes Welker this year. Jesus was the RB, not God. From the looks of this years Bills O line I'll wager God and his Patriot crew will be sweeping the Bills again this season as they part the Bills defense like the red sea and score over and over. Dunno why God would play for Belichick though. -

DJ has had 3 years of drafting and bringing free agents and he inherited a team that was fresh from rebuilding from the last two head coaches. He has had his chance to turn this team around, no more excuses about the talent. As to the eternal optimism at OBD, it drives me crazy that most of the posters here think that because they get few new faces on the team in draft picks and free agents that suddenly a miracle will occur and the Bills will make the playoffs. You could have the lord god almighty himself as QB and the arc angels as his receivers, his son Jesus as the RB, and if there isn't a decent O line in front of them...they will fail. I think that DJ and the FO gets that fact, I think they simply don't know how to build an offensive line and get them to function properly. Don't get me wrong, I want the Bills to win and win big, to beat the Patriots,Jets and Dolphins. I just don't see it happening this year, not with this line. -

Not for nothing but when you make as many dramatic changes to the offensive line as the Bills did this past off season you have to consider the team is rebuilding mode....AGAIN. For those of you who think you can insert 2 rookies as guards and a back up free agent at center and have brilliant play are delusional! In order to run past the line of scrimmage there needs to be an opening...In order to get the ball down field the QB needs time to throw it... I can see it now, once the season starts everyone will complain about Edwards not hitting his receivers and Lynch and Jackson not gaining yards because its lack of Talent. It is lack of talent alright, only it is lacking where is has been since the days of C Kent Hull, G Jim Richter, LT Will Wolford, RT house Ballard, G Glenn Parker and TE Keith Mckeller. Until the Bills build a dominate offensive line they will continue to be reside in the land of mediocrity. I do give the Bills some credit for trying the last few years. They hired one of the best line coaches and tried to bring in top free agent linemen and just couldn't get it to work. When the Bills drafted outland trophy winner Jim Richter 1st round #16 in 1980 he sat on the bench for a few years learning his craft while playing special teams and being a back up. Chuck Knox was smart enough not to start rookie linemen, Richter played 14 seasons for the Bills and started in all 4 SB's. The Point is, rarely do O linemen come right out of college and become dominant their first year playing, especially when one of them is slotted to start in a position he didn't even play in college. -

You can blame the QB all you want, but they are only as good as the O line allows. If the QB is under duress in less then 3 seconds he cannot get the ball out in time. When given time Bledsoe would tear opponents apart and the Bills would win. I can recall Mularkey stressing the point that Bledsoe needed to get rid of the ball in under 4 seconds, but then the OC didn't have the proper pass patterns set up for that to succeed. If the offensive line fails the entire offense fails, the best teams have the best offensive lines. That is one area the Patriots are working on to keep Brady up this season. The Pats line failed them in their last SB and failed them last year as Brady was knocked out for the season. They Pats had a veteran O line, now you think the Bills with a bunch of new players will do better then last season ?? -
I suppose Joey Porter shouldn't be named because he only had 17.5 sacks last season...playing part time. Now he has been informed he will play full time this season. Playing along with Jason Taylor this season the Dolphins might just set a new sack record. To be real, I'd be more concerned about the Bills facing Kris Jenkins 2x this season. He dominated the Bills O line while taking on three blockers and still got to the QB. Yea, that's right, both guards and center tried to block him in the first game had had little success. That is the main reason those players are no longer in Buffalo and were cut lose. But what gets me is how can this batch of nincompoops on the coaching staff think things will be better by having two rookie guards and a back up free agent center blocking him when seasoned veteran players couldn't get the job done. Not to mention that the rookie O line coach didn't seem to get his job done last season either, so who will teach these new players the proper technique they will need to succeed???

Like the loss to the 49ers last year, the only teams the Bills beat were LOSERS,besides Chargers and Broncos. Buffalo's offense was so easy to figure out, double cover Lee Evans and put 8 in the box to stop Lynch and Jackson and its a win. The Bills didn't win those seven game with spectacular play calling, Trent Edwards pulled out losses with really great comebacks on the Rams,Raiders and Jags and he outplayed Phillip Rivers and Jay Cutler to beat the Broncos and the Chargers. Not to mention that Lynch and Jackson were usually met at the line and managed to gain yards carrying defenders along the way. The coaching staff choked hard last season, 5-1 and then went 2-8 and were completly SWEPT in the division... -
Hello, Dick, why did we draft Maybin #1?
thewildrabbit replied to bananathumb's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Jauron signed a 3 year extension, the way he drafted this season it looks like he intends to be here for those 3 years. Its just a darn shame he didn't draft like this his first year with the Bills. Maybin will be a situational pass rusher this year, if he starts the Bills will set a record for rushing yards allowed. If he is able to develop properly he should start to get really good by his 3rd year, same with the two rookie O linemen. I simply don't see a miracle happening with the way that line was retooled so quickly. I keep reading on these boards that Maybin was the best pass rusher in the draft, he wasn't. It was Brian Orakpo , who was drafted by the Redskins after the Bills took Maybin. -
Oct 2002 - The story of Dick Jauron "Coward"-gate
thewildrabbit replied to 1billsfan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Talk to Turk Schonert, he wants to run a no huddle offense with two rookies and a back up FA center, still trying to find out who will play right tackle. More then likely Jauron will have a revolving platform to shuttle O linemen in and out of games this season. -
Knowing how the draft shook out.
thewildrabbit replied to billsfan89's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't know how you can say that the Bills filled a position until they actually have some success on the field during live games. You can pencil their names in and then... what if they suck when the footballs start flying for real, what then? -
Oct 2002 - The story of Dick Jauron "Coward"-gate
thewildrabbit replied to 1billsfan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If anything, I think Jauron is trying to move away from a conservative style of football he had with Steve Fairchild. When was the last time you saw the Bills run more then they throw? When was the last time you saw the Bills run constant play action instead of constant shotgun formations? The Bills offense is not conservative by any means and wasn't last year at all IMO. Fairchild was a bit conservative, but I think he was trying to establish a running game to set up the passing game.Whereas, Turk Schonert constantly wants to put the ball in the air no matter who is playing QB, and runs the ball as an after thought. If your talking defense, then yeah the tampax 2 is designed not to allow the big play and make the opponent make a mistake on the way to the goal line. I really hate the defense Jauron runs, with the smaller, quicker penetrating linemen and they always give up yardage on the ground to easily. I like Jauron as a person, but I can't see any team he is the head coach of going to the playoffs, ever again. -
The D line is WAY better then the O line at this point. C'mon at least they have 4-6 experienced guys that could start on the D line. The O line has what, one - two starters out of 14 on the roster and all at new positions. If the bills somehow manage to gain any yardage this season It will be a miracle. 7-9 was being kind, more like 3-13
-
anyone else excited to see this new O-Line?!?!
thewildrabbit replied to DrDawkinstein's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If Jauron keeps his job as HC for 3 years these new changes on the O line will pay off, more then likely he just drafted for the next HC. Same thing goes for Maybin, doubtful he will be productive his first year or two. Not for nothing but Jauron should have done this his first year and had Jim McNally there to teach them, by now he would have a really really good solid experienced offensive line, kinda like what Mangenius did with the Jets. Ryan will inherit a solid O line. -
If I were him I would never give up on an NFL career, I'd be constantly throwing and practicing and keeping in shape. I'd look to buy a computer program that would help teach reading defenses and more understanding of the game. Look at some #1 QB draft picks that have failed recently,Joey Harrington, Detroit:David Carr, Houston:Akili Smith, Cincinnati:Tim Couch, Cleveland: Considering how many coaching changes the guy has had to endure its no wonder he is not a very stable QB. 2004 broken leg in training camp, Mike Mularkey -HC Sam Wyche -QB coach and can't recall the OC but Mularkey took over play calling during the season and fired him after that. 2005 Losman starts but is pulled a few times in favor of Kelly Holcomb,Mularkey fired and replaced by Jauron and Steve Fairchild is the new OC 2006 Losman starts and has a very good year and really started playing well at the end of 06 and left everyone thinking the Bills could be a force in 2007. 2007 Losman starts but the Bills draft Edwards in round 3 and Losman starts looking over his should again and replaced by Edwards.Fairchild leaves and the QB coach takes over as OC. 2008 Edwards starts and Losman plays some games because of injuries to Edwards 2 different head coaches, Jauron-Mularkey 4 different QB coaches Wyche-Van Pelt-Schonert and ? under Mularkey, 4 different play callers in Mularkey, the OC in 04-05- Fairchild- Schonert. Talk about lack of continuity, its no wonder Jauron doesn't want another new play caller in Buffalo because he saw what all that turnover turmoil did to Losman. QB's like Rich Gannon didn't get really good overnight or even in 3 years, it took 4-6 years and sometimes more before some finally learn to read defenses.

I agree, this season looks pretty bleak! After looking back at the history of the Buffalo Bills RW did win some AFL championships and has been to the SB 4 times. I honestly believe that he feels if he dies tomorrow he will be ok with the fact that he fielded some great teams and won championships. All he wants to do at this point is put butts in seats and make a profit in a small market. I think he realizes that should the Bills fail to win many games this next season that Jauron's time as HC must end to keep selling out the stadium. Bringing in TO was a major marketing move by the Bills, that 6.5 million was really worth spending, at least for this upcoming season.

To answer the OP, YES! I think many many fans were suckered in by Trents comeback wins over the Jags, Raiders and Rams, not to mention outplaying Phillip Rivers in a 23-14 win over the Chargers. Everyone, and I mean everyone was on the bandwagon at 5-1, even stingy ole RW opened up and gave Jauron a new contract. I can recall many posts comparing Trent Edwards to Joe Montana at week 6...he certainly was the Bills best player up to that point. Then the reality hit when they faced AFC E opponents and the defense crapped the bed, the kicker crapped the bed, the O line went downhill and the only two bright spots on the team were Lynch and Jackson gaining yards where there were no openings. Special teams was no longer special as in good, maybe special as in short bus. As the OC kept calling shotgun play after shotgun play and deep passing plays which never develop and Edwards has to dump the ball to RB's because very few receivers get open. Hell, Schonert wanted to throw deep so often he didn't even start calling play action pass plays until week 11 against Cleveland. Just about every aspect of the team went into the ceramic convenience. I really don't understand how Jauron kept his job after that nose dive. oh crap, did I just reply in a SKOOBY thread
