How quick until we find a coach?
thewildrabbit replied to jax bill backer's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It sounds like if Shanahan wants the Buffalo job, it is his! The Bills should get him to sign a contract now to lock him up before other teams get a chance to up his asking price -
Tim Graham's timeline of FAILURE!

This is why the entire coaching staff and front office needs an overhaul, they may as well be putting names in a hat and picking them out for all the good they have done the last 4 years. -
Maybe Ralph isn't cheap after all

From Adam Schefter yesterday: ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that the Buffalo Bills have contacted and are in the process of arranging a meeting with, former Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan, according to two NFL sources. Shanahan is said to be willing to listen to the Bills and has said in the past that he is determined to return to the NFL next season. But there are other candidates at or near the top of the Bills wish list. For now, the Bills have appointed their former defensive coordinator Perry Fewell as their interim head coach. http://espn.go.com/blog/sportscenter/post/...-cup-qualifiers Just the fact they are setting up a meeting with Shanahan is exciting, the only other team that would jump ahead of Buffalo and worry me is the Redskins, although they seem to be currently enamored with Jon Gruden. -
Oh yea, a revolving door at QB is the answer... Someone posted we should get more young QB's and horde them to develop them, just who on this staff is going to develop them? Trent Edwards played great in the opener at NE and once the injuries hit the O line his play started to fall which leads me to believe a few things. Edwards can easily get the job done if the line is completely healthy. AND ,If the team has time to properly prepare against an opponent they can be competitive, meaning Jauron might have been a hard worker but I suspect he didn't prepare his offense properly each week, and it showed. Edwards commented about this last season and with a rookie OC that was promoted from QB coach two weeks before the opener just made things worse. The fact that the Bills currently have 3 healthy QB's and an injured and depleted O line and were forced to move a starting guard to tackle is the reason I made the earlier post in this thread.

The thing is Dick Jauron was more then just a "nice guy' he was a very hard working players coach. Well respected throughout the league as a class guy who loved football with a passion. BUT, you could hire the hardest worker in the world and that doesn't mean he is able to become a brain surgeon. He might even have the IQ to qualify, but it doesn't mean he can get the job done. The biggest reason Jauron failed in Buffalo was because he made some really bad choices to be his assistants, OC and DC, year after year. As others have indicated it was the right time, I can honestly understand how tough it must have been for Ralph Wilson to end the guys career. This move gives the front office a jump start ahead of every other team looking to replace their head coach Carolina- WASHINGTON-Dallas-CLEVELAND- Jacksonville-Houston-OAKLAND-Chicago to name a few

If he can get this patchwork of horrid schemes and injured players to a 4-3 record I'd be all for hiring him because he can make miracles. Let's face facts, the Bills defense is last against the run and 27th overall and simply horrible. The offense is even worse with some of the crappiest tackles in the NFL. To show you just how bad they are, the Bills took a tackle from the lowly Packer's practice squad and started him the next week.

I'm hoping the Bills bring in Charlie Casserly as GM and let him make the choice as head coach, the guy does know personnel. "The list of other potential head coaching candidates among the NFL assistant ranks is a long one and includes Dallas' Jason Garrett, Denver's Mike Nolan, Miami's Todd Bowles, Minnesota's Leslie Frazier, the Jets' Brian Schottenheimer, Baltimore's Hue Jackson and Philadelphia's Pat Shurmur. " http://www.buffalonews.com/452/story/866323.html Another name I'd look at also is a guy that was so innovative last season it blew my mind. This offensive coordinator set up a power running game utilizing THREE tackles on an unbalanced line and ran the ball successfully 70 yards. The defense knew they were going to run and couldn't stop them with 12 in the box, thing of beauty. Offensive coordinator Cam Cameron of the Baltimore Ravens.

Yea, the NFL network is also reporting that Wilson realizes this might be his last head coaching hire and wants to make a big splash... no holds barred... get the best guy out there... make the fans happy head coach. Just the thought of a Shanahan or Cowher even being contacted by the team should make everyone wake up and take notice, I know I'm happy with just Jauron being fired so far.
-
NONE, Now they need to make some more moves in the off season in regards to the rest of the coaching staff and things will change for the better. If player changes are to be made they had better start with the offensive line, which is currently the worst in the NFL and causing the problems for the offense.

My plan for the rest of the season
thewildrabbit replied to PNW_Bills_Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
You do realize that the Tampa 2 scheme is sound "IF" you have the right personnel, but its that dependency on the right players that makes it such a weak defense also. Buffalo has never been able to find the right players, on the line, linebackers and secondary. The Vikings run a version of the Tampa 2 that actually works and is usually in the top 5 against the run every year. -

I think he realizes this might be his last head coach hire and wants to go for broke...which is good to hear, meaning the latter and not the former. Just think, Wilson is gonna have to pay Jauron the rest of this year and then the next 2, till 2011. AND a big name coach is not going to come cheap, at least 5 million a year. From what I'm hearing / reading he wants to leave his fans base happy and get someone in Buffalo that can get the fans a trophy -
So, you were married to him at one time ?
-
Seriously, what freaking difference can any new QB make to this team at this point, are the coaches that stupid? The O line is in such shambles If I were Edwards I'd fake an injury to sit out the rest of the season, I'm hoping they don't play him and ruin him more then he already is. So this staff of clowns goes out and gets another lamb for slaughter rather then shore up the line, unreal.

It is rumored that Ralph Wilson realizes this could be his last head coaching hire and he wants to make a big splash. Mike Shanahan is one name that is rumored along with several others. This is a very smart move on Wilson's part because he can choose from numerous really good ex super bowl winning coaches and get a jump on next seasons coaching carousel. Mike Shanahan- Bill Cowher-Brian Billick- Jon Gruden- Mike Holmgren- Jimmy Johnson-Dick Vermeil. Although I wouldn't be really upset if he didn't hire Shanahan, as long as whomever the head coach is, he hires a great offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator. Don't get me wrong here, I'd love Shanahan to come here, if for nothing else then overhaul the offensive playbook. When Bill Polian hired Marv Levy I was like, who the f is Marv Levy...oh god not the tool who tried to run the wing T at KC. Ok well, he did win 3 Grey cups up north, but so what ... But then Marv hired Ted Marchibroda, the ex Colts head coach who had brought along Bert Jones. I said holy cow I gotta have season tickets to the Buffalo Bills and went over and bought them, and held on to them all thru the Bills super bowl years. As long as a head coach is a great motivator it really doesn't matter if he can run the defense or offense as long as he hires the right people to do that for him. Let's face it, Mike Nolan is the reason Denver went to 6-0 this season and Cam Cameron is a big reason a first year head coach had so much success with a rookie QB last season in Baltimore. My take is, first thing Ralph Wilson needs to hire a Bill Polian clone who can bring in the talent, then great coordinators. The real genius behind the Bills super bowl runs was Bill Polian, the very same guy who has had the Colts in the playoffs the last 10 years. Shanahan and his failure in Denver was because he failed to find and hire a great defensive coordinator.

If Bobby April is so great
thewildrabbit replied to Geno Smith's Arm's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yea that would be a first to see a special teams coach become a decent offensive or defensive coordinator, very rare. Now if he had said ST coach becoming a head coach, then there is a big list of coaches to make that transition, some very successfully. -

Just Relax... I'd play Hamden If I were head coach with this PoS offensive line. I'd let Trent Edwards get healthy and recover from the beating he has taken earlier this season. Besides, I seriously doubt Fewell will win many games with the current defensive and offensive schemes -
True, but he must be sick of sitting on a TV set and fishing by now. The guy was a great NFL head coach while in Dallas and that would present a great challenge to build the Bills into a SB contender. Oddly enough I was thinking of JJ eariler today, he would build a team that could compete against the Patriots and Bill Parcells Dolphins. Just think, this man was smart enough to recruit Thurman Thomas AND Barry Sanders in college.
-
Jeez, look at the defensive numbers for the Bills this season. If they were decent in any way then yea Fewell should get a permanent shot. But c'mon, last against the run and 26th overall, Ralph Wilson is doing the guy a favor buy allowing him to be an interim HEAD coach. Not for nothing but with those numbers he should be shown the door right behind Dick Jauron, I'll be surprised if he still has a job next season if he can't improve those stats. Actually this looks like a slap in the face to Bobby April who is assistant head coach under Jauron, he should be getting this opportunity JMO.
-
Gruden will be coaching next year, he has already stated he misses it and is ready to talk about a new job.
-
If the Bills are going to hire a non SB winner I'd rather see someone like Mike Nolan or Cam Cameron get a shot before some of the other failures mentioned. These two didn't make it in their first stint at head coach, but they certainly make great coordinators. I think it all come down to what your supporting staff can do, Mike Nolan hired Mike Singletary as his DC a and Mike Martz as his OC, and Martz was a complete failure. The 49er offense was horrid and Martz was to blame, Singletary is doing well as the Nolan replacement.

So does firing DJ now give the Bills a strategic
thewildrabbit replied to zow2's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
You do realize that Wilson is still on the hook to Jauron for 3 million next year and the rest of this year. So, Interim head coach costs Wilson nothing this year. But next year, 3 million to Jauron and how much will Cowher cost? 7-11 million Cowher wants powers in draft and all personnel 7-11 Million Holmgren who wants total power as GM / president 6-9 Million Shanahan who is partially paid by Pat Bowlen until after next season, this might make some sense Billick- Schottenheimer-any any other name will come at least 5 million, so figure Wilson to pay 3 to Jauron and 5 to another coach? This firing comes as a surprise to me so he might just throw caution to the wind and go get Shanahan or Gruden, who would really build a better offense. Lord knows this team needs an offensive overhaul to a west coast scheme. I actually kinda favor "Chuckie" if he hires a really good Defensive coordinator, maybe even Charlie Casserly or Floyd Reese as GM -
Thank you We have forgiven you already
