Mike Mularkey is Jags new head coach
thewildrabbit replied to mellaman101's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I always liked that Kevin Costner lookin mo fo. MM is the only Bills head coach to have a winning record the last decade at 9-7, and had the Bills on the verge of the playoffs that year if they win their last game. That team started out 0-4 but then with Bledsoe at QB they scored more points in a 6 game stretch they any other in team history. That Bills team was 7th in the league in offense. If only Donahoe got his head outta his arse and drafted for the O line instead of a QB. Bledsoe had a few years left but needed better protection. That 04 line was LT Jonas Jennings- LG Ross Tucker- C Trey Teague- RG Chris Villarrial- RT Mike D Williams...all household names right? Jeez, the revolving door on that line just continues year after year to this day. Mularkeys problem the next year in Buffalo was being handed JP Losman and expected to turn him into another Big Ben, that just wasn't gonna happen. RW wanted to retain Mularkey as HC after he fired Tom Donahoe, but Mularkey walked away stating that he was hired by Donahoe and things have changed. I'll bet he didn't think Losman was ever going to cut it as the starting QB no matter how much the owner/ FO thought he would. Look how many coaches and years the Lions wasted trying to make Joey Harrington to work out. Or the Texans trying to make David Carr work out. Anyway, from what I'm hearing the Falcons would have been better off building the O line up rather then trading away all those picks for Julio Jones, who was hurt most of the year. But then nobody wants to draft the big uglies over the "skill" players, even in Buffalo. I gotta wonder if Mularkey was brought in to Jax to develop Blane Gabbert...we will soon see if this man has learned anything from his Buffalo days as HC. -

There was so much fan talk here when the next head coach was being chosen, so much speculation over what happened with Marty. The fact is he was in conversations with Buddy Nix and he let it be known he was interest in the Bills HCing job. It was Ralph Wilson who shot it down stating he didn't feel "comfortable" in hiring Marty. Perhaps it is because Marty would probably hire his two sons to help run the team, or perhaps it was because Marty was an ex Buffalo Bills player, or perhaps Wilson actually thinks Gailey is going to not only get this team to the playoffs, but win games. From my view as just a fan I can say that Gailey has made so many different mistakes at so many levels that I find it difficult to believe he will lead any Bills team to the playoffs, even if given 10 years. Wrong personnel decisions with both assistants and players. Bad play calling to the effect that at least 3 games could have been won if not for the constant aerial attack which wasn't working so well, and abandoning the running attack which was working. Gaileys contrived short passing game has been figured out and I can't imagine going into next season with the same plan, but I bet he will. -
That's not entirely true, he used a 5th & 7th pick on OT his first draft, who have both been cut. Before that draft he told the media that OT was a "priority". Then after the draft when asked why no OT early he stated that nobody fell to him. As scary as LT was this year with G Levitre trying to fill in, it was even more scary when he started at Center. Whats also more worrisome is at center when Wood is 5x better then any other lineman on the roster. When he is in there the line is definitely better, and as far as I'm concerned that position is just as important as LT.The bills had an adequate backup center in Hangartner, but cut him in preseason. This team is incredibly lucky they have Fitz at QB who can set protections and get the ball out most plays in under 3 seconds, otherwise that O line would be so exposed. Not to mention that he can almost get it done with a cast of semi scrubs at WR &TE

Optimism reigns, it's the off season!
thewildrabbit replied to beerme1's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
naa, all fans are still looney all the way thru free agency. The Bills fans always think the Bills will sign all the big names, and what happens is that Nix will find some waiver wire players that everyone will gush about. Then they get all hyped up for the pre season and start of the season. -
It wasn't just the injuries, as pointed out by others in different threads the Packers had 14+ starters on IR and still won a SB. Its more that this team had little or no depth once a starter went out. Buddy Nix doesn't mention the center position in his presser, but that position was a huge key in the team falling on its face after Wood went on IR. How many guys did they try at Center, like 4-5? Wood, Levitre, Brown, Urbik, Garrison Sanborn. The Bills had a quality backup in Geoff Hangartner and cut him in preseason, he went back to his old team and started. Complete fiasco at center IMO. LT was another sore spot, the rookie 4rd pick LT had to start several games, the Bills even tried the guard Levitre at LT. Starting LT Bell just can't stay healthy. The Bills are just lucky that Fitz didn't suffer a serious injury this year, or that 6-10 record could have been much worse. WR & TE was another travesty, 9 WR's and 6 TE's this team had guys off the street catching balls. now there is some BS going on between the GM and Stevie Johnson, The GM says they want to keep him and talks have been ongoing, which is simply not true. He and his agent states the Bills haven't contracted him since he turned down the Bills last offer awhile ago. The bills currently have one good WR in Johnson, and it looks like they are willing to let him walk. No OLB / DE pass rusher once Merriman went on IR, again! Kelsey was half way decent but still not a dominate threat pass rusher. What team only has one player that can rush the passer, and that one player is known for being injury prone. Its why his old team gave up on him. Bell, Wood, Merriman, Parrish, Easly are known weak links because of a bad history of missing games because of injuries or season ending injuries. Just seems to me that if you know you have certain positions with 'Maybe's" that you get extra help at those positions before the season starts. Considering this team wants to build solely thru the draft, and with cast offs from other teams, I expect more years like the 2011 season.
-
The GM of this team just stated in his presser that he thinks Fitz can get us to the big dance, he just needs more talent around him. Like signing Stevie Johnson and still drafting another top WR,same with TE, OT or signing them in free agency. Don't you believe Nix when he says stuff like that? Fitz is as good as, if not better then guys like Joe Flacco, Matt Ryan, Alex Smith IMO. Give the man some better players around him, and some better play calls and I think he does much better. Brad Smith was the #3 QB on the roster, and the #2 WR, rookie LT, 4th rounder starting. semi decent oft injured TE.... pulling guys off the street to play WR. Fitz needs some real help.

Strong praise for Perry Fewell
thewildrabbit replied to dave mcbride's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Gotta love Bills fans and how every ex Bill is now a tool, player or coach. The Bills run defense did get better under Fewell, plus the man was smart enough to bench Trent Edwards and start Ryan Fitzpatrick during his brief tenure as HC. Fewell went 3-4, and one of those games Fitz was out with an injury, Brian Brohm looked like a joke against Atlanta. He took over after 9 games by Jauron, who won 3, lost 6 and basically ole dickie scuttled the team in the preseason by cutting RT Langston Walker and G Derrick Dockery and then firing the OC two weeks before the season started. The QB coach AVP took over setting up the offensive game plans, calling plays and doing his job as both OC & QB coach. Considering the crap team he inherited during the season Fewell did very well in my opinion. -
Who thinks Denver can beat NE?
thewildrabbit replied to Hapless Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Perfect play call at the end of that Denver game. The Bronco's are a running team facing the #1 defense in the NFL. I watched and grimaced as the Bronco's would run RB Willis McGahee on first down right up the middle, over and over. I know they are predominately a running team, but jeez, every series on first down, a hand off to McGahee right up the middle, again and again. All the way up until overtime, and on first down instead of handing it off to Willis it was a play action pass. That Steeler defense was fooled into stacking the box on first down because the Bronco's always ran on first down...right? Not this time, a perfect play call, play action pass at just the right time, a beautiful thing to behold. BTW, Josh McDaniel's not looking like a total fool now after selecting Tim Tebow AND Demaryius Thomas with #1 picks -
The GM got to Atlanta and immediately spotted the weak areas of the team and quickly moved to upgrade them...all in one year!! Another team that got it done right away with few mistakes. It really doesn't take 3-4 years to build a good team anymore, it just takes the smarts to draft correctly, and money to get the players needed in free agency. 2007 4-12, hired new GM, who hired a new HC, who hired a new staff to 11-5 in 2008,then 9-7, 13-3, 10-6 . BTW, that 11-5 Falcon team got it done with Lawyer Milloy and Coy Wire on defense. Wanna hear something crazy, the OC of the 2007, 4-12 Falcons was Hue Jackson (current HC of the Raiders), the DC was Mike Zimmer (current DC of the Bengals). The HC was Bobby Petrino who quit on them after 13 games.

When you draft a player like Joe Flacco / Matt Ryan who didn't win games almost by sheer will in college like Joe Montana. The QB needs time to develop properly in the NFL, and unfortunately not every QB is a Big Ben type who takes his team to the playoffs and wins almost immediately. Most QB's take 3-4 years to develop and Matt Ryan was drafted in 2008, same as Flacco. So he has been in the league 4 years now. His contemporary on the other side of the field in Eli Manning was drafted in 04,and the NY Giants won the SB in 2007. So the 4 years theory works out about right for Eli. Some QB's take a bit longer. I'm thinking that fits both Flacco and Ryan. Both are being developed as well as they can be developed on predominantly strong running teams with good defenses. So time will tell if either will ever develop into that ":elite" franchise SB winning QB. Some QB's develop but then never win the big game, Dan Marino- Jim Kelly Not to mention, not only is Eli Manning more developed then Matt Ryan currently is, that the Giants defense, run game, receiver corps are better then what Atlanta currently has. That Giant defense played great, and in typical fashion they showed what can happen to a good team when one team gets a decent lead. Not all QB's develop at the same pace in the NFL, so many variables. I look at Luck vs RG3, I'm thinking RG3 will be a winner before Luck will be.

which former bill did you wish we didnt give away
thewildrabbit replied to loserlovers's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The Bills should have paid him, as the defense still can stop the run like it did with Williams. They should have paid their pro bowl LT, 5x pro bowls now. Jim Leonhard goes on to be the defensive QB for the Jets , stupidity reigns at OBD -
This whole arguing about stats thing is kinda meaningless to me, the bottom line is wins. Like other have put it 4-12 last year and now this year 6-10 isn't even as good as Jauron at 7-9!!

Gailey is more then good enough to remain the HC, he has done a fine job at managing the game, which is exactly what the HC's primary job is. As much as I think both Nix and Gailey screwed the pooch on player personnel the last two years, Gailey screwed it even worse with his choice of assistants, he finally fixed the Edwards situation after two years. Now he needs to fix the OC situation, he needs someone not so pass happy calling the plays, someone to setup a more balanced attack.

You know what I hate about our offense.
thewildrabbit replied to BillsNeedaQBin2012's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
naa, Turk Schonert & AVP tried like crazy to copy the Patriots offense, constant shotgun, constant throwing, only with JP Losman and Trent Edwards at QB. The bills never did build a good enough O line to allow a deep passing game, that didn't stop Schonert from calling for deep passes tho. Is it any wonder why Edwards was always checking down. The biggest difference between Gailey and Schornert is at least Gailey knows and understands the limitations of his O line and tries to run a short passing game with not many deep 5-7 step drop back passes. Now this could be all pure coincidence that Gailey runs a shorter passing offense because now that the Patriots got rid of Randy Moss they don't throw deep very often either. He could just be trying to copy the Patriots, lord I only hope he is, because if he is it means the Bills will finally invest in some tight ends this year. Thinking about it now, i wonder if some sort of directive is passed down to copy that Patriots offense, because that's what Gailey, Schonert, AVP all have tried to do. Fairchild was the last OC to even try and build a power running offense, and the fans wanted him run outta town on a rail. -
Jason Peters -- First Team All-Pro
thewildrabbit replied to Kelly the Dog's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This was in 2008-2009 and its 2012 and they STILL don't have a replacement even close to his ability Peters 5x pro bowls now I have to think that the Bills 3 headed monster or RW just didn't want to pay any offensive player more then the starting QB -
You know what I hate about our offense.
thewildrabbit replied to BillsNeedaQBin2012's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yea they do, along with an empty backfield It almost looks like Chan Gailey is hellbent on making Fitz look like Tom Brady, the problem is the bills don't have the O line. the WR's, the TE's or the QB -
My take on the situation is the Bills may finally have some decent talent evaluators on their staff, people that can get it right the first time. So, that being said this team currently has way to many holes in the roster to be giving away all their picks for two years for one player. Even 2 # ones would be one to many IMHO This year, OLB - DE- OT- WR would all improve this team, now imagine 2 good pass rushers, 2 good WR's and 2 good OT's and you have a solid team with some depth. Now throw in a top TE like Gronkowski or Jimmy Graham, move Fred Jackson to 3rd down specialist like Daryn Sproles, add a bruising, punishing RB and you have a very good balanced attack. Right now the bills don't really have a young QB they are grooming to be Fitz's replacement, unless you count 3rd string QB who is also the #2 WR in Brad Smith. Just think, If Whaley and NIx are as good as everyone thinks then howabout we let them find the next Tom Brady with the 6th pick
-
The thing I think that most fans just don't get is, when you have a 6-10 team its usually pretty much devoid of top talent or bad coaches, or both. For Buddy Nix & Chan Gaileys first draft they came away with virtually not one solid starter to hit the field in 2010. For the 2011 draft only Marcel Darius the #3 overall started every game from the beginning of the year and not because of an injury to another player. All the star players on this team were already here (yet Jauron / Levy killed this franchise) Fitz, Fred jackson, Stevie Johnson, George Wilson, Kyle Williams, Eric Wood, Andy Levitre, etc etc etc. Then you could say there are two areas in which the team was, and still is desperate for upgrades at DE / OLB for the pass rush and LT, RT, back up C for the O line. these areas were basically ignored in the draft, save for Hairston who drafted in the 4th round is usually a project. If these two men reinforce the pass rush and O line the team wins more then 4 games in 2010, and they win more then 6 games in 2011 !! The world knew the O line and pass rush were weak areas since they traded away Jason Peters(5x pro bowler) in 08 and since Arron Schobel was injured in 08, So both Jauron and his band of clowns couldn't get it done. Now Nix/ gailey have had two years and they haven't gotten it done either. What really bother me is Nix knew he needed an upgrade at O tackle that is the reason he went after Atlanta OT Tyson Clybo AFTER the draft, and yet failed to secure him or any other player to help that line. He also cut his back up C in Geoff Hangartner in preseason. That player went on to start for Carolina and would have helped this team immensely this year. He also went into the season counting on an injury prone OLB he picked off the waiver wire, there was a reason the Chargers canned the guy. Nix is taking gambles when he should be solidifying the weakest areas with top players. Tell me, what HC- GM doesn't understand that a bad O line and no pass rush is going to kill a team? Everyone is so full of love for this GM / HC, isn't that nice:P. I'm not, I'm still scratching my head trying to understand how these two highly paid professionals got it wrong for two straight years now, and the fans love them for it...perplexing to say the least.
-
Tom Landry was a genius and developed plays and formations that are still utilized even in today's NFL, but this is not the 1960's, its 2012. Its all about winning, and going from a HC that had 3, back to back 7-9 seasons to a split with an interim HC and 6-10 with Jauron / Fewell. The team took a step back in hiring Gailey to 4-12, and this year only equaled the 6-10 fiasco of Jauron / Fewell. My take on the reason the team got worse instead of better is because this HC didn't hire experienced assistants. Instead he brought in some cronies from his college days at GT, and hired assistants with virtually no NFL experience at their jobs. For 2 years fans have had to endure the George Edwards / Curtis Modkins experiments. Now QB coach George Cortez is taking heat for something wrong with the offense, not sure just what, just yet. Most of the fans posting here noticed some tendencies about the play calling, and that once the team loses the lead this offense stops running the ball and just goes into an all out aerial attack. Considering the injuries to the WR corps, the O line, the TE it really didn't make logical sense to most fans to abandon the run during those games. If the defense improves and helps win games then hooray for Wannstache!! Although the offense is still a concern, is Chan Gailey calling all the offensive plays? If so, then he needs to fire himself as OC and hire an experienced NFL play caller, just like he did with Edwards. I have no problem with Chan Gailey as the head coach for the Buffalo Bills for the remainder of this owners lifetime...just as long as the team finishes next year with a winning record, even 8-8 would suffice.

Ive already hearing whispers from different places that RG3 will be the #2 player off the board if he declares, AND some think he might even be better then Luck. no link just yet, sry ....workin on it

Some Indy Insight into Polian's firing
thewildrabbit replied to buffalonian's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If you think Jim Irsay is a dic, his father was the biggest dic in the history of the NFL, to his players in particular. It must be nice for an NFL owner to have the time to "twitter" to all his fans I suppose the Colts fans base and its writers forget what that Franchise was like before Bill Polian, back to back 3-13 seasons. It wouldn't surprise me one bit to see the Colts slide back to what they were before Polian, a crap org with crappy coaches and GM's. PS I could care less if Polian was a complete bastage to everyone, just as long as the team wins -
Stating that, its even more amazing that Dan Marino threw for 5000+ yards all the way back in 1984 Kinda why it sucks for Andre Reed waiting to get into the HoF when you look at the numbers today's receivers are putting up
-
Three teams in front of Buffalo all want a QB, Cleveland- Washington - Miami and if that isn't enough Minnesota & St Louis aren't 100% convinced that the young QB's they currently have on the team are "franchise" QB's. So perhaps out of the 10 teams picking in the top ten only 2 teams are certain to NOT want to draft a QB. Carolina & Tampa Bay, and TB has some doubts. So then look at the rest of the NFL, KC - Seattle- Arizona- Jets - Denver will all be looking at a QB. with only 2 available in the top ten SO, Indy- Clev- Wash - Miami- KC- Sea- Denver . Matt Flynn- Andrew Luck - RG3 = 3 QB's for 7 Teams. If I'm GM of one of those teams I'd look long and hard at Matt Flynn, so much cheaper to acquire and so much more NFL ready. If Buffalo really wants to upgrade Fitz, they should go with Flynn. they won't need to trade their entire next 2 drafts to get him Flynn set franchise records when he went 31-44 for 480 yards and 6 TD's against the Lions last week , while Rodgers sat on the bench because the Pack had already won home field thru out PC It wouldn't surprise me to see the NY Jets make a move on one of those 3 QB's
-
Yep, that's right. Now Landry Jones is staying in school for another year. Matt Barkley is staying also, so that leaves RG3 as the only top QB prospect yet to declare his intentions http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/01/05/oklahomas-landry-jones-wont-enter-the-nfl-draft/ Holy cow, Andrew Luck is already rated as the next John Elway and some GM's have already stated they would give up Two #1 draft picks 2012 & 2013 and a vet player. Jay Glazer has stated it will take 3 #1's for the Colts to part with Luck. Sooo, If RG3 stays in school, does Luck become the first player to be worth 4 #1's ? I know fans here have been saying they would pull a Mike Ditka and trade this years entire draft for him, at this point it wouldn't be nearly enough. Wow, just wow, crazy stuff. What if he turns out to be another head case like Ryan Leaf? http://msn.foxsports.com/video/shows/nfl-on-fox?vid=226e5b7e-8244-47bd-ab3a-8ce2c9a2c7e5
