Buffalo obsession with Steeler retreads
thewildrabbit replied to Buffaloed in Pa's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Circumstances have changed greatly since 2010. Bill Cowher wanted to be near his children and family while he could before they were all grown up and gone. Sadly, his wife passed in July 2010 and his girls have all graduated and moved on. Not to mention that RW just now stepping away from the team completely now ushers in the freedom from meddling that I'm certain was a big concern to the bigger named coaches. Shanahan is taken, however Cowher is out there and he might want to coach again for 8 mill per. What coach would you rather have then a winning, blue collar, lunch pail kinda coach, who tells it like it is. The man knows talent in all aspects of the game, knows what assistants to hire and can build a defense with the best of them. All he need do is hire a Norv Turner / Cam Cameron to run the offense and its SB time for Buffalo again. Man, just think. A power running game and stout defense again. Just need the QB this year or next. -

Yea, good point. Contrary to what others are stating I'm not condemning this change at all. It would mean people like Bill Cowher / Jon Gruden would now have more interest in the HCing job I will however still remain skeptical because of Buddy Nix still being in the equation. Nix was the one who chose Gailey in the first place, and up until a few weeks ago believed Gailey was one of the brightest offensive minds in the NFL. It was an organizational move to fire Chan... Also, contrary to what Rus Brandon stated, I think the talent on the team hasn't really improved that much. If it had, the Bills would have won more games. I look at Nix and see a guy who can find talent off the waiver wire, but not so much in the draft. When a team is 4-12 / 6-10 just about every acquisition you make should have impact on the team, in free agency and the draft. 1st draft Spiller, 2nd draft Dareus 3rd draft Gilmore, Glenn. Free agency Super Mario! 27 draft choices and 4 players making a big impact. One 100 million dollar FA, he better make an impact for 100 mill. Perhaps it was bad coaching all around and a new HC and staff will make many of those draft choice look brilliant. After 3 years of Nix, Gailey & Fitz at QB. I just have no faith in Nix to find the Bills next franchise QB or HC. Color me skeptical and leave it at that. Like you said, lets see how it plays out. -
I dunno man. Cowher would want some control over who gets drafted and gets brought in during free agency. Plus, the Bills would need to pay him upwards of 8 mill per. Besides, who would want a fiery blue collar kinda HC that knows who to hire as assistants, knows talent when he sees it, and knows how to win.

I didn't say I was thinking it, now did I. But it was in several threads, and even Kellys wife responded by tweeting it was untrue http://forums.twobillsdrive.com/topic/154303-jim-kellys-wife-rumors-not-true/ I still don't see where anything has changed at all, except a job title for one guy. I will remain skeptical until this franchise hires a HC that knows how to win. -

Not just a QB, he had better find a decent QB AND a decent HC. Does anyone really trust Buddy Nix to try and desperately reach for a QB in this years draft after missing on Andy Dalton, Colin Kaepernick, Russell Wilson, Christian Ponder the last 2 years? 6 of the 7 teams drafting ahead of the Bills all need a QB, this will be interesting if Nix gives up anything close to what the Redskins gave up for RG3 and he drafts a bum. -

So now suddenly everything was Ralph Wilsons fault, and now that he stepped away everything will be great? I still don't see how anything is changed, except a job title. How can I not remain skeptical considering the past 13 years of hiring bad coaches, bad teams, bad drafting. Lets face facts here. I think most fans were thinking Jim Kelly / Thurman Thomas were going to purchase part or all of the team and RW was finally selling to a new owner dedicated to winning. Instead of making a profit and finding unique ways to keep the stadium filled. -

Now this is good news, and it just might get me to start thinking things will change for the better. However, I remain highly skeptical of this franchise because the only thing that has really changed is that the owner stepped away...for now. Wilson did this before with Tom Donahoe, how did that turn out? Rus Brandon was already in charge of football operations back in 2008-2010 as de facto GM after Marv stepped down, how did that turn out? -

Nix picked Gailey as his first choice. Why does anyone in the world think his next choice will be better? Nix openly stated he thought Gailey was one of the best offensive minds in the NFL... and yet his QB / team didn't know how to run a 2 min drill so many times this year -

Rus Brandon CEO... and now president too. Nix still doing the same thing as he did 2010 to 2013. No top QB in 3 years, 100 mill to find a pass rusher. Still lacking top WR & LBers Is this more wheel spinning then a top fuel dragster? Who will the Bills hire as their next HC? I think Brandon as CEO & Pres means no Andy Reid or Bill Cowher. Marty S might finally have a shot now tho. -

The more things change, The more they stay the same.... the ONLY thing that changes is Rus Brandon now has say over everything on the team and RW steps away. Rus Brandon was the de facto GM from 2008-2010 after Marv left. If that tells you where this team is headed. Buddy Nix has the exact same control over everything he had control over before this move, as Nix is head of football operations. Let's not forget that Nix thought Gailey was the best offensive mind in the NFL. If it were up to Nix, Gailey would still be the HC just like he stated a few weeks ago. Oh, it was an organizational decision to fire Chan, but ultimately it was Buddy Nix's call....yea, right after RW told him what he wanted done. Who the Bills hire as their next Head Coach will show the world exactly what has changed....if anything. This next HC will define the future of the team -

Yea, almost comical to listen to this. World class 4-12 to 6-10. What does it say when Jauron / Levy were better at 7-9

It all depends on who the next HC is, if Nix stays or not, who controls the draft and FA process. If the Bills hire a brain who can turn the team around then it will be a great day. I was hoping for someone who knows talent to be the next president, like Bill Polian or Atlanta GM Thomas Dimitroff. -
"The Jets reached out to ESPN analyst and former Colts president Bill Polian before hiring their general-manager search firm, but were turned down by Polian regarding any interest in replacing Mike Tannenbaum." Man crush on Bill Polian http://www.rotoworld...by-espns-polian EDIT: BTW, The Chicago Tribune reports Jon Gruden is now "leaning hard" toward staying at ESPN, and "turning down coaching feelers." http://www.rotoworld.com/headlines/nfl/253201/report-gruden-leaning-toward-staying-on-tv

Doug Marrone will interview w/Bills
thewildrabbit replied to Punch's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Completely different animal from College to the pros. I'd prefer a HC with a solid winning record in the NFL, they are out there and not cheap. But, Bills fans deserve a winner after 13 years of failure. Not to mention that the AFC East has a HC that ALWAYS has his team in the playoffs every year, and consistently vying for the SB. So they need to hire a top man. -
It does seem appropriate that the Bills would interview and possibly hire a guy that was fired from his last job, just like Gailey was.... this has to be Buddy Nix. Another teams garbage right? Yea, worst in the NFL... I know the Bills were sorta interested in Grimm in 2010. Man, we can only hope this is just an interview.

Did some of you miss the part about "the courage of his convictions" to trade away the farm to get RG3? The Redskins owner also tried to pursue Peyton Manning, but he said no, and probably because the Skins are in the same division as Eli. http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/7668243/washington-redskins-acquire-no-2-overall-pick-st-louis-rams Point one. While the bills under Gailey / Nix were spinning their wheels with Fitz at QB, the Redskins went out and got their Franchise guy, and gave up a ton for him. Point two. The Redskins didn't wait until a franchise QB "fell" to them, like Buddy Nix has been waiting for. They went out and tried several avenues until they got their man. Point three. Shanahan is noted for running a version of the WCO that relies heavily on the run game. Even winning the SB with Elway the MVP was Terrell Davis. While RG3 is magical, its the running game and a very good defense that is helping them win. Like I said, RG3 only had 100 yards passing against the Cowboys and their RB had 200 yards rushing.... to those of you that think its all about the QB ... Point four. Shanahan also didn't try and screw up his QB's head with a complex WCO offense and allowed his QB to run the offense he ran in college. Point five. The bills could have won more games by giving the ball more to Spiller / Jackson and less to Fitz Point six. The Bills spent 100 million dollars on a single player in Super Mario. When they face arguably the very best HC in the NFL in Bill Bilichick 2x a season in the AFC East.. The ONLY way to compete against the best is to hire the best. "The Bills need to hire the right HC and NOT some "maybe" guy. They spent the money to get the very best FA DE in the game, lets hope they do the same for the next Buffalo Bills HC" Oh yea, this thread was all about I told you so...

I can recall last season so many fans stating that they were grateful the Bill DIDN"T hire Mike Shanahan, and were glad the Bills hired Chan Gailey! Still feel that way now? Shanahan showed the courage of his convictions and traded away the farm to get his "franchise" QB. He also hired a decent DC who knows what he is doing and can actually motivate his players. The biggest thing is the Redskins aren't just winning because of RG3, like the Colts are with Andrew Luck. They are winning like the Seahawks, 49ers, Vikings & Texans in the regard of building a good defense, hiring the right man to run that defense and building a great running game to support the QB. Shanahan was also smart enough to run the read option offense for his new QB rather then try and stuff the WCO playbook down his throat. Would it surprise some of you to know that the Redskins are the #1 rushing team in the NFL? Sure RG3 runs a lot. But the current #2 rusher in the NFL is Alfred Morris ....who? Yea thats right, Shanahan did it again with finding a nobody RB and elevating him to a superstar. A 6th round from pick Florida Atlantic just broke the Redskin franchise single season rushing record. His last game he rushed for 33 attempts for 200 yards against the Cowboys while RG3 only passed for 100 yards. Its a good time to be a Washington Redskin fan again as the "skins" are in the playoffs with their rookie QB. So are the Colts, Seahawks. The Buffalo Bills probably have the most dynamic RB in the NFL in CJ Spiller but nobody really knows about him because his HC underutilized him for most of the year. Along with starting RB Fred Jackson the Bills had the very best RB tandem in the NFL IMO. The Bills were 6th in the NFL in rushing this season and could easily have been #1 if they had run more and had Fitz throw less. Just like in this past Jets game and in the Jacksonville game. The Bills need to hire the right HC and NOT some "maybe" guy. They spent the money to get the very best FA DE in the game, lets hope they do the same for the next Buffalo Bills HC.

Buffalo Bills fire Head Coach Chan Gailey
thewildrabbit replied to scribo's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Or allowing a DC like Dave Wannstooge / George Edwards as your DC is equally moronic. I hope the Bills hire the biggest pr!ck on earth, just as long as he wins IDGAF. I wish Chan Gailey well, he did his best. -
If you are gonna give an unproven assistant coach a promotion to HC about the only man I'd vote for is Mike McCoy. The man actually got Tim Tebow to win, and they won a playoff game with him...holy cow! I still wouldn't mind someone like Marty S as HC in Buffalo as the man has a penchant for taking bad teams and building them into playoff teams. Marty is older then dirt now, so he just might finally be old enough for RW to hire

Buffalo Bills fire Head Coach Chan Gailey
thewildrabbit replied to scribo's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
NFN but Chan Gailey was one of the luckiest men on the face of this earth. To be given a job to do that he loves and get paid millions of dollars to do it. I don't feel bad for him, he got more chance then Pat Shurmur 2 years more chance. More Chance then Romeo Crennel and one more year then Ron Rivera What stinks is, with his background in coaching (under Bill Cowher) you would think he would have a better handle on how to build a winning team and get his players to overachieve (like Jauron did) instead of underachieving. -
