  10. Bill, Brandon isn't going anywhere as he is the sole reason RW stepped away. Which is a great thing because no NFL HC wants to be micromanaged by phone from another city all day. Russ wants a job after Ralph, so i'll assume he really actually wants to build a winner...just as frugal as possible to make the owner happy. So far this regime hasn't made any "Cornell Green" type mistakes. Although they have made a Geoff Hangartner type mistake with Chad Rinehart. It can't be easy being the GM of this team when someone is always looking over your shoulder asking if such and such a player is an absolute need. Anyway, Marrone has a new staff and I'd imagine game situation things will get better as the season goes on. We know the defense should improve greatly with McKelvin, Byrd, Gilmore get healthy. Anyone at CB besides Rodgers would be an upgrade. --------------------------------- In regards to the OP, read this. http://www.buffaloru...kett/in/4504483 "Poor blocking. Especially when Spiller is on the field, the Bills are getting dominated at the point of attack. Teams are gearing up to shut down Spiller, and knowing that the Bills are running out of the read-option, they're blowing up Bills blockers on the line of scrimmage left and right. They're aided in doing so by the fact that Manuel has missed some golden opportunities to make big plays with his legs on these play calls." ""Pointing solely at the play-calling as the reason for Spiller's lack of success to this point is highly simplistic, and largely stems from in-game observations focused exclusively on play results. Hackett's play-calling is okay; it might behoove him to pull back on his reliance on the read option, particularly with Spiller in the lineup, but he's folding a lot of different sub-options into these calls that have big-play ability when executed correctly. Until Buffalo's young quarterback and skill players are fully assimilated to the offense, we should expect missed opportunities like this, and only stretches of the offense "clicking" as a result."" LG Colin Brown is just killing that O line with some absolutely horrible play the last three games. Will he improve as time goes on? Because if not, I highly doubt anyone behind him is any better. Sam Young allowed two sacks in the short time he was in the game subbing for Urbik, and Legursky has never graded well, and his versatility to play center might be the only reason he is even on the roster. The Bills need to bring in a FA tackle, and move him to LG or try Welch in that position. JMO.
  11. The Patriots also stacked the box and shut down Spiller. But then only blitzed 6 out of 32 drop backs. Even giving EJ all day to throw isn't the answer, it's getting the run game / Spiller going early. It sure will be a long season for Bills fans if Hackett can't figure out how to make Spiller the running threat he was last season. My take is to utilize Gailey's 4 wide, single back, shotgun spread offense that will give Hackett the chance to maker Spiller the dominate force he was last season. The Bills used that play a few times the last few games and Spiller had some decent success in them. The only reason they don't go with them full time is to keep a TE in to protect EJ. But clearly that isn't working. That said, I also think Hackett is keeping it simple for EJ because he might be having difficulty making more then one or two reads.
  12. Thanks, its those details really give me an insight into what's happening on the field. Two players killed the Bills last game, CB Justin Rodgers and LG Colin Brown. The Bills need to make some serious adjustments heading into this week against the very same type of defense the Jets have. Despite the bad play at LG the Bills should have been able to make some creases for Spiller....c'mon man, 10 rushes for 9 yards!! One reception, one yard. Get this kid into space, and / or make FJax the starter. As of last game Jackson has 10 less carries and 16 more yards. He is also at a 5.3 ypc avg.
  13. Although Gailey had some serious flaws in his thinking, like placing a broken backup QB into a high octane offense and expecting him to play like Tom Brady. The offense wasn't the real problem as it was the historically bad franchise / NFL wise defense that lost so many games last year. Gailey also had a RB that averaged 6.0 ypc with 1244 yards rushing. The problem was his offense couldn't control the clock passing or running, and as good as the run game was they couldn't get a 3rd and short by running it at all. If ya can't control the clock or LoS, ya won't win many games despite all the trickery in the world. Chan Gailey, and his choice for QB sucked!! Bills fans are disgruntled by the lack of offense this year team is showing, and rightfully so. CJ Spiller was god awful bad last game with 10 rushes for 9 yards, one reception for one yard. Now, considering the lack of production by the starting RB is it any wonder as to why the passing game also went into the toilet? Regardless of the QB. A common NFL defensive tactic is to stop the run and force the team into a one dimensional passing offense, so then the defense then pins their ears back and blitz every play. Which is exactly what the Jets were able to do. Thus sacking EJ 8 times, that's right EIGHT times. As bad as EJ looked last game with his hurried, errant passes and inability to win the game. The bigger problem is fixing the running game, and defense. The Bills had a shot to win that game if CB Justin "toast" Rodgers doesn't allow 74% of the Jets passing, along with 2 TD's. Right now two players are killing the Buffalo Bills, and one of them is not "Mr Composure" EJ Manuel. They are DB Justin Rodgers and LG Colin Brown http://forums.twobil...o-line-defense/ EJ, ""As with any rookie quarterback, there will be growing pains and E.J. Manuel certainly had his first-year issues on Sunday. He seems extra cautious to take care of the ball, which is certainly not a bad thing, but it perhaps takes away from his ability to make plays down the field. The Jets routinely challenged Manuel to throw deep, but he was only able to connect on 1-of-8 passes beyond 20 yards and he often led his WRs too far out of bounds. Perhaps that was his carefulness taking over, but the Bills’ simplified offense will be opened up at some point, and those are the plays that eventually need to be made."" https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2013/09/23/refo-buf-nyj-week-3/
  14. Thanks Ralph. This is kinda like your PP, Pain & patience speech after week 8 in 2010. You know the one where you stated it will take time to rebuild after that 0-8 start. Funny thing is, I can recall Buddy Nix stating that " you're going to think I'm crazy, but we're not that far away." at the start of 2010. "It doesn't matter what kind of splash we make today. What matters is two years and three years down the road, if we have this thing turned around in the right direction and we're winning," Nix said. "I know before I'm asked this, you're going to think I'm crazy, but we're not that far away." http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4785461 The thing that bothers me about this team is the Bills let a top player leave (Andy Levitre) because of money, and also let a decent back up G leave (Chad Rinehart). Now the replacement player is not even remotely close to being a suitable replacement, and is grading as the worst player on the team. Yeah, even worse then CB Justin " toast" Rodgers who allowed 74% of the Jets passing playson Sunday. This situation wouldn't be a big deal if Fitz were back there getting hammered as usual. But now they have a 1st round pick at QB starting to get the snot beaten out of him (NY Jets 8 sacks) There isn't going to be highlights at all this season for me if the Bills allow EJ to be turned into another Trent Edwards / JP Losman.
  15. True, Pears might not have a great pedigree, and he didn't have a good game against the Jets. But the man is doing a decent job and currently grading pretty well considering. Not just by PFF standards either. http://www.wgr550.co...t-Jets/17373633 Year to date grades, ranked by aggregate GPA (Minimum 75 plays) 1) ILB Kiko Alonso - 3.30 2) DL Kyle Williams - 3.22 3) LT Cordy Glenn - 3.18 4) SLB Manny Lawson - 3.08 5) WR Stevie Johnson - 3.02 6) RLB Mario Williams - 2.93 7) DL Marcell Dareus - 2.92 8) HB Fred Jackson - 2.91 9) CB Nickell Robey - 2.91 10) WR Robert Woods - 2.87 11) CB Leodis McKelvin - 2.87 12) RT Erik Pears - 2.62 13) DL Alex Carrington - 2.56 14) TE Scott Chandler - 2.56 15) HB C.J. Spiller - 2.55 16) RG Kraig Urbik - 2.55 17) RLB Jerry Hughes - 2.54 18) C Eric Wood - 2.52 19) DL Alan Branch - 2.51 20) QB EJ Manuel - 2.50 21) S Jim Leonhard - 2.48 22) ILB Arthur Moats - 2.45 23) S/CB Aaron Williams - 2.44 24) S Da'Norris Searcy - 2.39 25) WR T.J. Graham - 2.30 26) CB Justin Rogers - 1.60 27) LG Colin Brown - 0.92 Worse grade then CB Justin "toast" Rodgers. Colin Brown is making that entire line look bad. I have to wonder how much longer do the Bills leave him in there? I don't see Doug Legursky or Sam Young playing much better either. I have to question letting G Chad Rinehart leave (who is now the starting LG on the SD Chargers.) http://www.utsandieg...ls-free-agency/ "Offensive Line Another week, and another game where left tackle Cordy Glenn (86, 2, 3.0) looks smooth and comfortable in dealing with his assignments. In pass protection, Glenn went up against Quinton Coples and quite simply dominated him at the point of attack. The left tackle had a miscue on one run play and also had a holding call late in the contest, but otherwise played a very good game. The rest of the offensive line wasn't nearly as effective, however. Right tackle Erik Pears (86, -4, 2.0) had his worst game of the young season. When Coples was lined up against Pears, the second-year player had some success there. Eric Wood (86, -4, 2.0) struggled a few times in the run game and like most others he lined up against, Muhammad Wilkerson gave Wood some trouble as well. Kraig Urbik (82, -2, 2.3) and Sam Young (4, -2, 0.7) handled the duties at right guard. Urbik had to leave the game near the end of the second quarter with a knee injury but returned to start the second half. While he was out, Young came in and directly contributed to two of the Jets' eight sacks. Once again,Colin Brown (86, -10, 1) was the weak link of the offensive line. This time, it was a combination of Wilkerson, Damon Harrison and rookie Sheldon Richardson that gave Brown trouble throughout the game. He's constantly playing without leverage, which leads to many plays where his assignment can easily move past him."
