Sad day for old school football fans everywhere. Loved Bum Phillips, and his "luv ya blue" Houston Oilers.

Actually Jauron was the HC, and defacto GM / partial OC. Remember he took the heat for OC Turk Schonert by stating he called that roll out play for JP Losman against the Jets that lost them the game. For some inexplicable reason Jauron didn't want an experienced NFL offensive coordinator. Reflecting back on it Jauron / Schonert & AVP actually did better with Losman / Edwards then Gailey did with an experienced QB in terms of wins. You guys need to remember that Nate Hackett is also a rookie OC, calling plays for a QB that didn't even play more then 2 pre season games because of injury. The other two young QB's, an un drafted free agent and Kid off the practice didn't get many reps in camp or in the pre season. That said, now looking at the total offensive rankings so far this season to last year. This 2013 season Buffalo is 15th in yards, 26th passing (with 3 rookie QB's), #3 in rushing. 2012 19th in total offense, 25th in passing, 6th in rushing. EJ is currently ranked 28th which is better then Locker, Henne, Ponder, Freeman, Foles, Fitz, Cassell, Gabbert, Glennon, Matt Flynn, Thad lewis.

Do I resent a bumbling hick fool as a Bills GM, then heck yea! I probably always will. The guy has a long list of major mistakes as a GM. Like I said, I'll always remember the Stew Barber screw ups too. Nix wasn't a complete waste of space as he did revamp the Bills scouting dept and got rid of chief scout Tom Modrak. Whats another 3 years wasted in the grand scheme of things, as he didn't turn around anything.

Lets not forget that Seattle wanted to make a trade for Lynch before the 2010 draft, and didn't Seattle offer a 2011 3rd round pick at that time? It was also rumored that the Packers and Eagles were interested in Lynch. Anyway, from what I recall from other sources at that point in time It was reported that they knew a trade with Seattle was going to happen and Saints GM Mickey Loomis was trying like crazy to even talk to Buddy Nix., and Nix wouldn't take the call. Something personal between Nix and Loomis? Anyway, I looked and couldn't find the link to either story. http://www.buffaloru...two-draft-picks In my view the Seahawks hoodwinked old swamp gas, a 2007 1st round pick, #12 overall for a 2011 4th & 5th. (15 GS in 2012, 1590 yards, and 11 TD's 5.0 YPC avg.) But whatever, after reading this thread most fans don't care.

Did he? Got a link for that grading? Because from the PFF grades I saw the guy was negative -23.7 after week three. Which is astoundingly bad. "" LG Colin Brown who is now grading at -23.7 through three games. "" Just to sorta put that grade in perspective. CB Justin Rodgers allowed "" Rogers was targeted eight times and surrendered six receptions for an absurd 247 yards. That represents 74% of the Jets’ gross passing total."" Rodgers finished that day with a negative -5.3 coverage grade. https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2013/09/23/refo-buf-nyj-week-3/ undrafted rookie QB Jeff Tuel looked like a deer in headlights, threw a bunch of turf balls against Cleveland. "" Jeff Tuel failed to impress (-4.9). Entering the game midway through the third quarter for E.J. Manuel" I recently read some articles that stated LG Colin Brown was the worst player in the NFL this season. Divide that -23.7 by 3 and its a -7.9 per game! Currently Buffalo has the #3 rushing offense in the NFL after 6 games, and the #15 offense in overall yards. They also took that Cincy game into overtime with a QB right off the practice squad. Dunno about you, but I'm willing to cut this new OC some slack considering the combined playing experience of his 3 young QB's, EJ, Tuel, Thad. Plus, it may take awhile to get all his players more proficient in this new offensive scheme. P.S. The Bills finished #19 in offense last year under Gailey. #25 passing, #6 rushing.

How much more proof do you need to identify a moron? Man, do i agree with that first sentence. So may times I watched that kid make yards in Buffalo with him dragging 2, 3 defenders on him. That's just it, Lynch would have been a perfect fit in a run first attack, even with Jackson & Spiller. Marshawn as the lead back to wear the defense down, Spiller as a change of pace back in a 2 back set so they never know which is getting the ball. Then utilize FJax as the 3rd down back which would elongate his career quite a bit. The Bills could have easily had the #1 rushing team in the NFL and let whichever QB they had just manage the game. This would have made life so much easier for any QB behind center for the Buffalo Bills. Like I stated earlier had the Bills hired thechin or Martyball there is no doubt in my mind this would have happened, and this never ending rebuilding would have stopped.

Exactly Chan Gailey wanted his Water-bug, and stated such months before the draft that year. Just to show how inept Buddy Nix actually was, the New Orleans Saints were calling Buffalo about Lynch and were willing to give up a 3rd rounder. Nix never even took their call. Jay Glazer of FOX reports that the Saints had told the Bills that they were interested in trading for Lynch, a first-round pick in 2007. But the Bills didn’t shop Lynch, as Glazer had first reported back in October. Glazer now reports that the Saints would have given the Bills a third-round pick, more than the Seahawks ultimately surrendered. Even if for some reason the Bills didn’t want to trade Lynch to the Saints, the Bills should have at least shopped Lynch around. At a minimum, they could have gotten more out of the Seahawks. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/01/09/marshawn-lynch-could-have-been-a-saint/ It just drives me crazy about how bumbling-ly foolish Buddy Nix was to this franchise and not many really recognize it. The local Buffalo media basically crucified Bills HC Hank Bullough for his miss-speak, and stupid actions and yet give Nix a pass. Imagine if the Bills had hired Bill Cowher or even Marty Schottenheimer instead of Gailey. It is my opinion that the Bills would have never traded Lynch and he would be doing great things in Buffalo.

I look at Spiller and see just about the exact same player as he was in 2012. If there is a difference it is in the current O line, blocking schemes, and offensive philosophy. First, LG Colin Brown was by far the worst player on the team and the result was not being able to run from that left side like they had last season. Then, the Bills new OC was determined to run Spiller even when defenses were stacking the box and keying on him to stop him. Which they did rather effectively at times. Game one, the Patriots held him to 41 yards on 17 attempts, a 2.4 YPC avg. a far cry from his 6.0 YPC avg from 2012. Spiller was used to running from those 4-5 WR shotgun spread passing sets under Gailey to Hackett keeping a TE to help with the pass rush for EJ. Different offensive sets make a big difference. Game two, the Panthers didn't stack the box or key on Spiller and he had 16 rushes for 103 yards. The Panthers seemed more intent on stopping Fred Jackson as he had 12 attempts for 30 yards. Then if you look at the rushes from the LG, it was 5 rushes for 3 yards. RG had 10 rushes for 89 yards. another compelling reason as to why Colin Brown stunk so bad. Game three, the Jets annihilated Spiller by keying on him, 10 rushes for 9 yards, Fred Jackson 7 rushes for 72 yards Game four the Bills ran well against the Ravens, FJax 16 for 87, Spiller 23 for 77

Colin Brown might be better playing at the center position then he ever was at guard, and Eric Wood has ended every year on IR. So the Bills do need a viable backup center. They did the same thing by cutting Geoff Hangartner in the 2011 off season, and the result was a disaster when Wood went down in week 9 that year after starting that season 5-2. Anyway, was this a cost cutting bean counter move? An, I'm sending a message to the team move that bad play will not be tolerated as Brown was graded as the worst player on the team. Or is this a move because the Bills coaches were frustrated by Browns inability to be coached up at guard? Or is it that the Bills don't want a 6'7'' tall center? It seems to be that it should be far easier to play guard then center, as the center usually calls the protections for the line and the only position as important on the line besides the blindside tackle is the center IMO. While I get the reason the Bills chose not to pay Levitre the money the Titans gave him. I just don't get Buddy Nix's philosophy of guards being a dime a dozen, by his reasoning if a tackle fails they can be moved inside to guard. It is my opinion that every position on that line is just about equally important in installing continuity, and solid play. If your guards can't do their job it allows the interior D line the quickest way to disrupt the QB. In terms of the Bills fast paced offense, it should be relatively simple for an offense to call the play get to the line quickly while not allowing defensive substitutions. This causes several problems for the defense. First, most defenses like to constantly switch out the D linemen to bring in fresh pass rushers. If they can't do this it keeps the tired, slower linemen on the field the entire series. It also keeps the defense from making substitutions in the defensive secondary. From a regular set to nickle and dime coverage's on 3rd down. It also keeps the same defensive players on the field thus usually making it easier for that rookie QB to make the defensive reads as to what coverage's to expect. It makes perfect sense to me to always have the offense play the hurry up style / no huddle, even with rookies and new players. What concerns me bout this upcoming Miami game is that the Dolphins won't be rushing only the front four like the Bangals did last week. I fully expect Miami to throw some exotic blitz packages at the new QB,and since Cincy was able to sack Lewis five times and force him to fumble. I can only think this game is going to show just how glaringly unwise it was to not have an experienced back up QB on the roster. I'm far more willing to give Marrone / Hackett / Pettine / Whaley a pass this year then I back in 2010 with NFL experienced good old boys Nix / Gailey. So far this regime has looked far more promising to me then the last regime ever did.
-
If I recall correctly it was the game time penalties and his attitude that kept him from being resigned by the Bills. BTW, he hasn't completely changed since he has been in Miami, but at least now he has sought counseling and recognizes he has an anger management issues. How much stupidity can you stand to take by someone making millions of dollars to make those personnel decisions? I tend to criticize all the morons hired by Ralph Wilson, from GM Stew Barber to HC's Kay Stephenson, Hank Bullough, Dick Juaron, and the wondrous GM Buddy Nix.

Gotta love Bills fans eternal optimism! Buffalo Bills 2-4, PF 136, PA 157 @ Dolphins 3-2 @ New Orleans 5-1 Chiefs 6-0 @ Pittsburgh 1-4 * Jets 3-3 Falcons 1-4 * @ Tampa Bay 0-5 * @ Jacksonville 0-6 * Dolphins 3-2 @ New England 5-1

I'm more shocked that Nix thought those two were decent players. Oh wait!! Isn't that the same moron GM who brought in FA-RT Cornell Green at 2 mill per in 2010 only to see him benched & cut by week 5 What is disconcerting is the fact that Marrone went into the season with those two turds, and didn't have them replaced in pre season. But then again the bean counters might be the bigger reason.
-
There was a big reason the Bills chose let Incognito leave, as his was still a head case at that time. I watched him talk about his transitions from team to team and he admitted he still had mental problems in Buffalo. He even stated that It wasn't until after he left the Bills that he realized he needed to lose that enormous chip on his shoulder, and stopped trying for the achievement of being the dirtiest player in the NFL. But yeah, if he had gotten his head straight while in Buffalo he would have been a very good addition to that line.
-
FAAA, err ...Heck no!! He subbed in for Urbik for a few plays against the Jets and promptly allowed two sacks. If you can believe it, he is worse then Brown.
-
How many games does it take you to see how much worse this guy can play? All I can say is HOLY CRAP this guy is bad, negative -24 after 3 games wasn't bad enough? Just to put that number in perspective Jeff Tuel (deer in headlights) only graded at -5 by throwing turf balls in that Cleveland game. Or another perspective is that CB Justin Rodgers allowed 74% of the Jets passing, along with 2 TD's and Brown graded out worse. "The Buffalo Bills offensive line is about to get significantly better going forward, as the Bills have decided to cut ties with LG Colin Brown, who might have been the worst starting offensive lineman in the NFL. " http://nflspinzone.com/2013/10/15/buffalo-bills-finally-release-colin-brown/ It really is upsetting that most every Bills fan knew how good LG Andy Levitre was as he graded as last seasons best O lineman. When they chose to let Andy leave in free agency the Bills they just didn't have a proper contingency plan.

I have never, ever seen any NFL team besides this years Bills go into a season with only a rookie QB, and an un drafted rookie QB. Not sure who gets this blame, Whaley / Marrone or the bean counters. In case you missed it, the Bungals only blitzed 6 times in 41 drop backs and they still sacked Lewis 5 times, and forced a fumble. Cincy mostly only rushed with their front four. Just imagine what this green as grass kid would have looked like if that Cincy defense played like they did the week earlier against the Patriots. Not allowing Tom Brady a TD pass and holding the Patriots to 6 points. Or if he had played a blitz crazed team like the Jets. Thaddeus looked better then I would have ever thought, but he was greatly helped by some strange play calls by Cincy's DC. But then look what the kid looked like with the game on the line, and he needed to make a play in overtime, and his passes were horrid. "Lewis came alive late and profited from some questionable play calling and execution from the Bengals’ defense. Only blitzed five times on his 41 drop-backs, two of those were Lewis’ fourth quarter touchdown passes to Scott Chandler and Marquise Goodwin" https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2013/10/14/refo-cin-buf-week-6/ Yea, I meant they should have never started the season with that craptastic punter. Special teams coverage's also have been suspect. This coaching staff, and team is a work in progress. But, I have so much more faith that this staff can build a winning team ...then I never had with Gailey / Nix. Lastly, call me crazy, but there is a QB sitting out there right now that is arguably the very best read option college player ever. A guy who also won an NFL playoff game. If this team wants to run the read option the rest of the year, it would make more sense to me to sign him over someone like Matt Flynn. He is also one tough SoB and would make a great power RB IMO. -
Jeez, the Bills now have a rookie LBer that was named Septembers rookie of the month and has a good shot at defensive rookie of the year. The steal of the 2013 draft! The kid is LEADING the NFL in tackles with 66 after only 6 games Its just to darn bad the rest of the Bills defense doesn't play up to the level of Kiko!

While I agree that this new regime is far far superior to what Buddy Nix / Chan Gailey did in their first year back in 2010, as those two clowns only changed like two starters. Then Gailey proclaims Trent Edwards as the starting QB, gave him all the 1st string reps only to cut him after two reg season games. A big reason the team started 0-8. One of those starters was FA RT Cornell Green at 2 mil per which was a total waste on money, as he was quietly benched and released after five games. As free agency opened in 2010 GM Buddy Nix announced he was going to get some sleep. What a clusterF that staff was!! That said, this new regime isn't without its warts! Like entering the season with only two QB's who are both rookies, and one was an un drafted free agent. Huge huge blunder! How many QB's has the team gone thru in only 6 weeks? Leinhart, Kolb, Tuel, EJ, Lewis, Flynn Like thinking LG Colin Brown was a serviceable starter, and it took them 5 games to finally replace him as a starter. Then backup G Sam Young (who was released) was more worthless then starter Colin Brown. Young entered the Jets game in place of Urbik for a few series and promptly allows two sacks. Starter and depth for losing the Bills best O lineman in free agency (LG Andy Levitre) was horrifically bad. I get not signing Levitre for that much money, but why cut G Chad Rinehart if your not keeping Levitre? Like cutting the starting Punter after he really screws up the Cleveland game by kicking directly at the Browns best return man over and over. Like allowing CB Justin Rodgers to stay in that Jets game, they targeted him only 8 times but he surrendered only 6 receptions for an astounding 247 yards and 2 TD's. That was 74% of the Jets passing total in that game. Like the new Bills OC stating he would run Spiller until he throws up, and in many games Hackett is making the fans throw up with some bad play calls. I wouldn't canonize QB Thaddeus Lewis just yet as the Bengals only blitzed Lewis 6 out of 41 drop backs, and he still gave up 5 sacks and a fumble. Normally I'd be verbally tearing this new HC / GM coaching staff a new one every day, all day. But ya know what!! I'm very impressed with what new GM Doug Whaley did in this years draft, Kiko rules! EJ, Woods, Goodwin. I'm very impressed with the new DC Pettine! Its so refreshing to finally have a DC who knows what he is doing, and is able to get good production out of his players - schemes, despite some serious injuries in the secondary. The Bills might still have a bad defense stat-wise @ # 28. Our eyes tell this defense is very much different that what Dave Wannabe-stache fielded last season. I'm impressed with what Marrone / Hackett / Pettine have done so far this year considering the talent (or lack of) they were forced to deal with by the bean counters. -
The difference between 2013, Marrone and his staff vs 2010 Chan Gailey and his staff is unreal. All the Bills fans back in 2010 stepping up with excuses for Gailey / Nix was just crazy. Now numerous fans complaining when the team is immensely better in almost every area. The team has suffered injuries at QB, CB, S, WR, RB. Nobody remembers that 0-8 start for 2010 under hapless Chan Gailey? That with a journeyman vet QB in Fitz. The defense under George Edwards was horrid and the O line was even worse. So bad that Buddy Nix pulled 4-5 guys off the waiver wire and 3 became starters. The only real complaints I have are in starting CB Justin Rodgers, and allowing LG Colin Brown 5 games to see if he could play. When it was clearly evident right away that both sucked big time. Rodgers allowed 74% of the Jets passing and 2 TD's Brown was even worse with a negative -24 grade for the year. I do also question going into the season with Tuel as the only backup QB, what a colossal blunder!!
-
Just to let fans know what the Bengals DC game plan was against PS QB Thaddeus Lewis. "Lewis came alive late and profited from some questionable play calling and execution from the Bengals’ defense. Only blitzed five times on his 41 drop-backs, two of those were Lewis’ fourth quarter touchdown passes" "- Pressured 11 times, Thaddeus Lewis attempted only four passes (zero completions) and was sacked five times with two scrambles." https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2013/10/14/refo-cin-buf-week-6/ This tells that most of the game the Bengals mostly only rushed with their front four, so the Bills O line really wasn't tested like they were against the Jets, and their all out blitzing tactics. This reminds me if the Patriots (week one) defensive game plan against EJ in not blitzing and thinking the rookie will make mistakes on his own. Still, Lewis was sacked five times, and I would really hate to think of how badly he would have looked if Cincy's D had played against the Bills the way they played against the Patriots the previous week.
-
yep, a better O line, better TE would make a huge difference IMO
-
This is exactly what happens to a good QB when the team forgets to build a dominate running attack. The Giants used to have a power running game and let Eli manage the game, like Joe Flacco, like Matt Ryan. Now when he is forced to shoulder the game by himself, and is failing. It also doesn't help that their defense is sucking. The Jets did this same thing with Sanchez and he fell hard on his face. Not every QB is Tom Brady / Drew Brees who can win just by passing.
