To those of you who defend Hackett
thewildrabbit replied to billsgpr88's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
well said Not to mention that even with this "inept" rookie OC, rookie HC, many injuries to the star players, with sub par players on that O line, and very inexperienced QB's. This years offense is ranked BETTER then last years that had Andy Levitre at LG, that had Journeyman QB in Fitz, that had a very NFL experienced play caller in Chan Gailey. The 2012 offensive playbook was unlimited. 2013 offense ranked #17 total, #27 passing, #4 rushing 2012 offense ranked #19 total, #25 passing, #6 rushing -

OK, how is this? 2nd QTR 5:50, 1st down and 10, 1st play of the series on the Buffalo 41. PLAY ACTION, Thad Lewis hands off to FB Frank Summers (the single setback), runs off RT for 16 yards. 3 wide set with a TE on strong side, run was to weak side. The first Miami tackler missed Summers behind the LoS, so Summers was able to break free for a big gain carrying two defenders on him. Next play, 2nd QTR 5:17 1st down and 10 at the Miami 43, SHOTGUN set, FB Summers single set back next to Lewis, LG pulls to lead block up the middle for -2 yards Now, the rest of that series resulted in a FG. The poster was wrong when he stated this drive resulted in no points and the OC was inept because he called for two similar plays to the FB. Considering both Spiller and Jackson were seriously hurting it made sense to use the FB and back up RB Choice at times. 1-10-BUF41 (5:50) F.Summers right tackle to MIA 43 for 16 yards (J.Jenkins). 1-10-MIA43 (5:17) (Shotgun) F.Summers up the middle to MIA 45 for -2 yards (D.Shelby; R.Starks). 2-12-MIA45 (4:42) (Shotgun) T.Lewis pass incomplete short right to S.Johnson. 3-12-MIA45 (4:38) (Shotgun) PENALTY on BUF-T.Graham, False Start, 5 yards, enforced at MIA 45 - No Play. 3-17-50 (4:38) (Shotgun) T.Lewis pass deep left to T.Graham to MIA 20 for 30 yards (D.Patterson). Penalty on MIA-O.Vernon, Defensive Offside, declined. 1-10-MIA20 (4:26) T.Lewis pass short left to F.Jackson pushed ob at MIA 16 for 4 yards (R.Jones). 2-6-MIA16 (3:56) (Shotgun) T.Lewis pass incomplete short right to S.Johnson [D.Jordan]. 3-6-MIA16 (3:51) (Shotgun) T.Lewis sacked at MIA 22 for -6 yards (R.Starks). FUMBLES (R.Starks), and recovers at MIA 21. T.Lewis to MIA 21 for no gain (D.Jordan). 4-11-MIA21 (3:19) (Field Goal formation) D.Carpenter 39 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-G.Sanborn, Holder-B.Moorman. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/gametracker/playbyplay/NFL_20131020_BUF@MIA It may sound techmo to some ( whatever that is ) But its how the runs are defined. -

It drives me nuts that all these fans are coming out of the woodwork to whine about a rookie OC / HC, with so many injuries, and such inexperienced QB's. Where were these people the last 3 years when they could make legitimate complaints about a very, very NFL experienced HC / OC / QB? -

How do you call running a similar same play over again that had just worked off RT for 16 yards with FB Summers Inept? It was in fact a play up the middle behind Eric Wood and not off RT, so it was a similar play, and not the same play. I totally get the Bills OC that if you find something that works try it again with a little variation. Miami has the 13th ranked defense, and are 9th against the run in the NFL. Yet the Buffalo Bills managed to win this game. Bills fans are making me sick with all this nit picking over the offense with such inexperienced QB's behind center. Both RB's injured and a new player at LG just off an injury. WR Stevie Johnson injured the last few weeks so he was unable to get timing down on pass routes. Wanna complain about something? Just wait until after this next game at the NO Superdome against the 5-1 Saints -

Where did i say it was? If you read my post it states both EJ & Lewis have almost no NFL playing experience. Of course the play calling is going to be limited / simplistic for both QB's. I can only think that with more playing time under their belts the Bills QB's will eventually see a more complex offense at some point. To the fans wanting more deep passing plays. Those plays take significantly more time to develop, and this offense is predicated on getting the ball out very quickly to avoid sacks. Plus with the very worst player in the NFL at LG (Colin Brown) the Bills QB's haven't had that much time to throw deep very often. -
The Saints could be without their leading receiver in TE Jimmy Graham, even then...it could get really really ugly in the superdome. Really, freakin butt fugly, like 2012 SF 49er 45-3 ugly. The 5-1 Saints defense under Rex Ryan's brother Rob. The Jets had 8 sacks on EJ. Gotta wonder what the Saints D will do to poor Thad. Will we see Matt Flynn for a few series. Then perhaps Tim Tebow next week?

What is it with today's Bills fans, they used to be some of the most knowledgeable fans anywhere! Stop the complaining and think about how much NFL game experience EJ has, how much NFL game experience does Thad Lewis have? Oh Wait, let me answer! Almost none!! Could it be that the HC / OC needs to keep the offense extremely limited-simple because of lack of playing time for Bills QB's!! Could it be that the HC / OC want to run a hurry up-no huddle offense to keep the opposing defensive substitutions limited or non existent so the offense (rookie QB) doesn't have to contend with fresh pass rushers or nickle - dime coverage on third and long. This would also limit the defensive looks and formations the rookie QB's need to read and set the protections for. If the Bills play calling seems simplistic...IT'S BECAUSE IT IS!!! BECAUSE THE BILLS HAVE A QB JUST OFF THE PRACTICE SQUAD!!. Seriously guys, get a freaking grip! Look at what this OC has had to contend with, a flaming PoS at LG. Injuries to the #1 WR, the #1 RB. The Bills are currently #17 in total offense & #26 in total defense. Now look at 2012 the Bills were 19th in total offense & 22nd in defense. So stats wise the Bills defense is playing worse and the offense is better. After 7 games the Bills are 3-4, which is the same as last season. Only this year the Bills have some VERY inexperienced QB's behind center, and no Andy levitre at LG. -
While I agree is was a colossal blunder to go into the season with two rookie QB's on the roster, and one an undrafted free agent no less. I also think it was not very bright to release LG Chad Rinehert if they knew they weren't going to resign Levitre. Andy's replacement at LG, Colin Brown was probably the worst player in the NFL his first 5 games. I have to pause to think if its the bean counters at work here again. Trying to keep the team as profitable as possible so the balance sheet looks good for the next owner.

Whaley stated this was his draft, that EJ was his guy. That his job is on the line if this draft doesn't succeed. I give Whaley ALL the credit for Kiko, R Woods, EJ, Thad Lewis. Whaley will have the “final say” on all personnel decisions the team makes, Brandon said. http://www.buffalobillsdraft.com/2013/05/doug-whaley-officially-named-gm-of-buffalo-bills/ "I was an integral part in the drafting process of EJ Manuel," Whaley said on the NFL Network show. "I was the person that handled the draft process and setting up the board. But it was a collaborative effort between myself, coach, the area scouts, the cross-checkers and, of course, Buddy Nix." http://blogs.buffalonews.com/press-coverage/2013/05/doug-whaley-wont-middle-buffalos-big-wager-on-ej-manuel.html I will give Nix credit for sweeping the garbage out of the scouting dept tho.

Well, kinda glad we passed on Freeman...
thewildrabbit replied to Mike B. in VA's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Freeman has years of experience and a 10 win season behind him. The Vikings could have simplified the offense more, and just run the ball. 53 attempts for Freeman tells me the Vikings gave up on the run way to soon, along with only 13 carries for the best offensive player on that team. What, the Vikings don't have another RB besides AD in case the defense is stacking the box like they do with Buffalo & Spiller? Lots of Bills fans complaining about Bills OC Nate Hackett. Let me tell ya, he is way better then Vikings OC, as Bill Musgrave really sucks!! -
the 88 defense was 3rd in points allowed and 4th in yards allowed. so yea, way, way better! Plus the Bills went to the AFC Championship game that year after a 12-4 season. This doesn't feel like 88 to me, Marv had lots of previous HCing experience, and as was pointed out the defense / QBing with Jim Kelly was far superior. Kelly spent time developing in the USFL under Mouse Davis utilizing the "run and shoot" offense so he wasn't a real raw. If anything this somehow feels more like 85-86 with QB Vince Ferragamo- Bruce Mathison at QB.

I honestly thought Ryan Fitzpatrick would develop better under a supposed QB guru in Chan Gailey. In 2010 Fitz was playing lights out in some games, like the over-time games against the Chiefs in Arrowhead, and against the Ravens in Baltimore. Then against the Steelers at home. Sure, he had some questionable games but then he was basically running for his proverbial life at the beginning of the season, carrying the entire offense. Spiller was worthless his first year. Plus, ya gotta remember that O line was so band-aided it wasn't funny. RT & RG off the waiver wire became instant starters because the depth was so bad. The Bills lost Eric Wood week 15, and were crushed in the final two games without him against the Jets, Pats. Now looking at what happened during, and at the end of that year a normal person would think to shore up the O line depth. Instead they cut the backup center Geoff Hangartner, and paid dearly for it after starting the 2011 season @ 5-2. Center Eric Wood went down week 7, and the season went with him. Then in the 2012 off season Gailey hired QB coach David Lee to help Fitz with his footwork and mechanics. Fitz spoke out about by stating that this was the first time in his NFL career that anyone had helped him in those areas. Meaning that it was all Fitz and Gailey did nothing to help his QB become a better player. Then the Bills drafted Cordy Glenn and they actually had a half way decent O line. I thought with the addition of Glenn, Lee, and Wannstache the Bills would make some noise in 2012. Man, was I wrong. -

aren't ya glad the Bills lost the Josh Freeman sweepstakes? -
Fans don't care that this is a rookie head coach, a rookie offensive coordinator, and they are learning as they go. The team also is starting a QB two weeks from the practice squad that played in only one previous NFL game, and the result has to be a very limited playbook / game plan. Fans don't get that fact either. They want to see a Drew Brees wide open offense regardless if the QB knows the plays or not It doesn't matter that both RB'a Spiller, Jackson are playing hurt, or that WR Stevie Johnson can't be 100% healthy either. Fans want what they want!! As for me, I'm just happy to see the fish squished
-
While I do admire Lewis's ability to make a big play now and again. Plus his enthusiasm is infectious, and he didn't do anything to lose the game like Fitz would have. The Bills seriously need to wait and watch to see how this kid progresses. Because when you sit back and think that only two short weeks ago he was on the practice squad. The Bills traded LBer Chris White to the Lions for Lewis back in August. Then was released and signed to the practice squad. So he didn't get many first team reps in training camp or first team starts in pre season. Lewis could conceivably get much much better with more reps and practice with the starters. Then again he could get so much worse once teams learn his tendency's just like all the rest of the Bills QB's the last decade. Clearly this is a wait and see situation, and from what I've seen of the NFL...nothing is ever set in stone.

I'm just glad that Marrone hired Pettine and Gailey didn't or we would still have Fitz back there throwing game enders. Isn't it remarkable what a difference a decent defense can make. The Bills defense is still ranked 26th in yards allowed. While Miami is ranked 14th, and doesn't that show you stats are meaningless at times.
