What Holes Does This Team Have?
thewildrabbit replied to Rob's House's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yea, i don't even know how you could compare that Broncos receiving corps to the Buffalo Bills corps with a straight face. Wes Welker, Demaryius Thomas, Eric Decker & TE Julius Thomas. Just which do you double cover to take away? Plus that Denver O line has a #1 draft pick, two #2's draft picks, a #3, a #4, and not a half a line of scrubs off the waiver wire. You would be surprised how much that helps. -
Report: Bills WILL add a QB's coach
thewildrabbit replied to The Big Cat's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
One would have thought that an offensive minded ex NFL O line player, ex NFL O line coach, ex NFL OC for the New Orleans Saints for 3 years would have never made all the mistakes Marrone made in his first year as an NFL head coach. One of the best phrases that came from Chan Gailey after his first year as head coach..."you don't know what you don't know"! The reason some NFL head coaches spend 80 hours a week in their jobs was because they meticulously went over every little detail in everything they did. Some head coaches pay so much attention to detail that they want to leave nothing to guesswork, so when their team takes the field there is nothing left to chance except the bounce of the oblong spheroid. Clearly that didn't happen last year, and hopefully we fans will see some better results this year from more experienced coaches. Hopefully this new QB coach is someone with some past NFL experience to help out that 2nd year coaching staff. Perhaps someone like a Jim Zorn. -

Three of the Bills O linemen graded in the red against the Patriots in week 17. Legursky (-2.1) Urbik (-2.1) Pears (-2.5). Now I think Urbik may have been dealing with an injury of some sort this year, and he has to keep playing as the Bills have no decent depth at OG behind him. While Urbik could still develop into a better player with better coaching and with an upgrade at RT alongside him. There is a lot to be said for continuity should the Bills go RT & LG with some of the first three picks in this upcoming draft. While contrary to popular opinion that I don't like the guy. Urbik has done an adequate job at RG, considering he plays a bit tall, and doesn't always get low enough. Then if you are building a playoff team and want the O line to dominate...then he isn't the guy, as he has had many bad games recently. Solid to a degree, just not a pro bowler. I like road graders at OG, and players who are mean, maulers types that can dominate in every facet. -

What Holes Does This Team Have?

This! Although, I think EJ will be fine next season as he had no history of injury in college as he only missed one game his final two years. LG-RT-RG all need to be upgraded, IMO Then a huge need is to find a way to stop the run because 28th with all that talent on defense just won't do. Is it because the DT's are penetrating rather then run stuffing or do they need a stud at MLBer and move Kiko outside? The Bills have drafted 3 WR's in the first three* rounds the last two years in Robert Woods in the second, Marquise Goodwin in the third last year, TJ Graham in the third in 2012. The Bills have drafted WR's with that #1 pick and brought in TO, I still didn't see the playoffs. This Bills have a glass QB in Kevin Kolb and perhaps another in EJ, along with raw players in Thad Lewis & Jeff Tuel. The one thing I'd like to see is that Line finally upgraded across the board. -

Mock Draft - 3.0 Updated 3/16/14 (Major Changes) on PG. 4
thewildrabbit replied to H2o's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
nice post H2o. BTW, I wouldn't* be surprised to see 4 QB's taken in the top 10, as I'd add Derek Carr to that mix. Five teams in the top 10 all have a big need for a franchise QB. I think if either Matthews or Robinson are there the Bills should pull the trigger for so many reasons. Mostly because building a dominate O line is the one thing they haven't tried the last 14 years. I'd even be OK with the Bills then drafting an OG in both the second and third rounds to finally build a complete top line across the board. Currently the Bills have 9 of 11 defensive players that were 1st & 2nd round draft picks, and where did it get them? 6-10 again! The Bills have drafted WR's & RB's with that first round pick many times it hasn't resulted in a playoff game. They even brought in a a known big time WR in TO to bolster the receiving corps, and that didn't work either. -

Mike Pettine speculation-interviewing w Cleveland
thewildrabbit replied to mannc's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
You're kidding right? This forum was constantly gushing about how great it was to finally have a QB guru as a HC. Then after his 4-10 start so many fans were defending him by stating the first year is always a pass because he needs to evaluate his talent. Kinda like they were about the Marrone hiring last year, and this new toy has already started to some shine. -

Pretty sure Al Davis was notorious for doing this at times. The people I can remember are Mike Shanahan and Lane Kiffen, but I'm thinking there are others that didn't make it public. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3620818 -
Ever have a knee injury with a bad sprain or worse a slight tear? Neither require surgery but both usually require several weeks of rest, and sometime months of rest. The last injury was a knee "sprain" on the same left knee that he injured in pre season. The other injury was a knee sprain on his right knee where he missed four games. So he was rushed back after only two weeks in pre season, then missed four games mid year, then the last two weeks. Those types of injuries often leave the QB with limited mobility, and very susceptible to a strong pass rush. This has to be particularly problematic for a QB who is used to running. Those injuries kept the Bills from utilizing that read option part of their offense. Which really limited what they could do on offense. EJ was never a pro style pocket passer in college, and teams had him rated as a Cam Newton light type. So saying this years injuries hampered his development is an understatement. EJ only missed one game in his final two years in College so he hasn't had a past history of injury issues. I'm hoping the Bills grade EJ as having a much greater then 15-20% chance of becoming a star QB. In fact I hope they grade him at 60% or higher or they better think of drafting a QB at #9 or trading up to get one of the top 3. Personally I'm hoping this season was just a fluke and EJ gets some help in his surrounding cast to help him become a better pocket QB in terms of several upgrades on the line, a top TE like Jimmy Graham, and perhaps a star WR like Eric Decker.

Mike Pettine speculation-interviewing w Cleveland
thewildrabbit replied to mannc's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Not necessarily, as I would think it really so much depends on the interview itself. Should Pettine kill it in his interview on exactly how he plans to build a championship team. If Gase and others leave with a lesser plan then Pettine would get the job. Plus, you would have to think the man isn't exactly happy about his longtime friend being the scapegoat for this years #28 run defense. Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the current Bills DT's scheme designed to be more of penetrating types rather then run stuffers. Isn't it the D line that is supposed to control the gaps and stop the run? The LBer coach had the defensive rookie of the year, and the 3rd leading tackler in the NFL. Yet Marrone keeps his bud who clearly stunk it up. -
Apparently, you missed the fact that Edwards went 5-4 in his rookie year while subbing in for JP in 07. The next year the Bills started the 08 season by going 4-0, and winning two of those games on the road. This forum was already going crazy with playoff talk and how Edwards looked like a young Joe Montana, right up until that helmet to helmet devastating hit for a concussion that started his downward spiral. That play at this time would have not only gotten Wilson a huge fine but most likely a suspension too. So Edwards started his career with the Bills by going 9-4!! Any other QB's you know that start out that well? IMO It was HC Jauron and his loser of an OC in Turk Schonert that sucked. Let me ask, where is that OC now? What happened to him after his one year stint as OC for the Bills? You know, the guy Jauron fired two weeks before the start of the 09 season. The fact is, Jauron and staff of morons managed to ruin two young QB's in both JP & Edwards. In regards to the O line functioning as a solid, cohesive unit, allow me to make a comparison. Think of all the talent on that current Bills defense as 9 of 11 drafted in the first two rounds. Yet they still lack cohesiveness as a unit in several areas, as in mostly in stopping the run as they ranked 28th in 2013. They also were 20th in points allowed. Last season that Bills O line was pushed around in many games. They couldn't control the line of scrimmage despite being the #2 rushing team in the league, and #1 in rushing attempts. Plus, they also couldn't control the clock. That unit needs some serious upgrades.
-
Its not really IMO. Yea, last year Glenn was a rookie, tho he still played well. When I say a solid line I mean all 5 players The 2011, 2012 O lines had a poor RT (-7.2) & very average RG. These players would never be starters on playoff teams. While I agree the Bills currently have a top LT, and center, and the LG position improved somewhat after Brown (-30,1) was replaced. It still graded very poorly, and was weak spot on the line with Legursky (-8.1) in there. While the starting RT & RG had some decent games this year. They also had some absolutely horrible games, and quite frankly shouldn't be starters. The current RT was penciled in to be replaced but that replacement player (Hairston) suffered an injury, and ended on IR, and out for the year. Think back to what the Bills looked like against the Jets in that first game, the Steelers, the 4-12 Bucs. Now imagine this years Bills teams playing the Seahawks D, or 49ers D in the playoffs. They would get annihilated. While I'm not advocating 1st or 2nd rounders all across that line. They do need better talent now at 3 of 5 positions.
-
I would argue exactly that, and that both JP & Edwards didn't start out as totally bad QB's, but were ruined by bad schemes, and lines. Gailey's scheme and Fitz's ability to get the ball out so quickly made that line look so much better then it actually was. This year the Bills were graded 28th in pass blocking, and #16 in run blocking. Yet were the #1 team in rushing attempts, #2 in yards. What does it tell you that the line can't make a first down by rushing when needed or can't control the clock or line of scrimmage. While I agree that a better QB would help that line. But how long would he last behind it as the Bills were 29th in the NFL with 48 sacks allowed, and were 29th in hits allowed with 106.

Mike Pettine speculation-interviewing w Cleveland
thewildrabbit replied to mannc's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't think so. Michael Lombardi is their GM, and is probably responsible for all the recent moves on that team. They will hire the man with the best plan for winning and turning the team around. Lombardi has been around long enough to know what he is doing. The team will probably wait until the playoffs are over to make a decision. but then again, If Pettine is indeed getting a second interview, then my panic is starting to heighten. -
Really, a solid line since 07-08. Is that why they won so few games? It just might happen that you share the same insight in that O line that the Bills have done since that time. The Bills have has some absolute scrubs at different positions on that the last decade, and In my view is a huge reason why they don't win many games. Lets look at the current four teams left in the playoffs, The Patriots, LT Solder #1 pick. LG Mankins #1 pick. RT Vollmer #2 pick. so 3 of 5 are 1st & 2nd round picks The Broncos, LT Clady #1 pick. LG Beadles #2 pick RG Vasquez # 3 pick. RT Franklin a #2 pick. So 4 of 5 are top 3 picks and their center is a 4th. The 49ers, LT Staley #1 pick. LG Iupati #1 pick. RT Davis #1 pick. So 3 of 5 are 1st & 2nd round picks. The Seahawks, LT Okung #1 pick. LG McQuistan #3 pick C Unger #2 pick, So 3 of 5 top 3 picks. Look like all the playoff teams have great stability on the left side of their line. The Bills could have had 3 of 5 this year, and great stability but they let their highest graded player in Andy Levitre go to Tennessee. Instead they ended up with the very worst graded player in the entire NFL at LG after 6 weeks. Then cut him and replaced him with a below average player. The Bills currently have TWO #1's at corner. TWO #2's at Safety. A one hundred million dollar DE, and several other low round draft picks on the defense. Four #2's Five #1's that means 9 of 11 players on the defense have been drafted in the first two rounds. The Bills had the 2nd leading pass rush in the NFL this year with 57 sacks, and they led the NFL in tackles. Where did it get them? Oh yeah 6-10. The Bills drafted a WR in the 2nd & 3rd round last season, and 3rd rounder in 2012. So before they let those players develop its best to draft a WR with the #9 this year.... How many Bills players on that O line have made the pro bowl since 1994? I'll tell ya, exactly two! It takes five good players to make up a quality O line. Which is something this franchise hasn't seen since the Jim Kelly Days. Probably why they haven't won a playoff game for 17 years, and have missed the playoffs for 14.

Bills Interested In Alex Van Pelt As QB Coach
thewildrabbit replied to iommi's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
While I wasn't exactly keen on AVP calling plays for Jauron, that team did better then Gailey with less talent. I'm all for getting these young QB's a coach of their own and AVP would be a good fit IMHO. -
I've been arguing that the Bills should build a solid O line since I've been posting in this forum. This franchise has been intent on drafting defense, and skill players over the big uglies no matter what the last decade! With every single regime change it seems like they make an attempt at one or two players and then stop. I suppose someone at OBD just can't stop thinking of those impact playmaking players

Will the Patriots be turning into the Al Davis Raiders, who loved to bring in players that other teams wouldn't touch because of character concerns? Stay Tuned.

The Bills spent draft picks on three WR's in the first three rounds the last two years, and i just don't see them going WR again unless he is a can't miss superstar. The Bills have more pressing needs at OT, TE, LBer. TJ Graham in the 3rd in 2012- Robert Woods in the 2nd 2013- Marquise Goodwin in the 3rd 2013.
