I like what Trader is saying. There isn't a tight end worth a 1st round pick after Pettigrew's combine performance, especially at #11. There is too much depth (Pettigrew, Coffman, Cook, Casey, etc) to spend a first round pick on a TE when one could be taken in Round #2. I'd take Curry at #11 and not trade down. I would also take Crabtree at #11. Yes, his combine and fortune have not been good recently, but he truly is that "boom or bust" kind of prospect. Buffalo desperately needs playmakers. That's Crabtree. He is not as versatile as say a Harvin or Maclin, but he is the best wide receiver in the draft and has true #1 WR potential. You can't pass on that if he falls to #11. Otherwise, I would honestly prefer to trade down in the first round. I believe there are many solid starters who come come out of picks #15-#30 and Buffalo has a lot of holes to fill.

The Bills need players that not only produce but will be a long-term answer in order for Buffalo to be a good organization again. Yes, Rogers makes sense if the Bills are in the mix for a championship, but it makes no sense to sign a player that has been with two teams the last two years, plays exceptionally well but only when he's motivated, gets paid a lot of money, and every time there is a little trouble or frustration he wants out of the situation. That's what you get with Rogers. Since the Bills aren't near a championship, pass on him. He isn't worth it. Sure, he has put up big stats, but big stats don't always translate to wins. Just look at who he's played for and the team results. Remember, Carson Palmer puts up big numbers. So did Larry Johnson a few times in his career. Rogers is the same type of player: put up big numbers, talented player, but he's not a leader or a winner. The Bills need winners as well to change their culture.

Huard is exactly what the Bills need. Not good enough to be a starter but solid back-up. Not a guy on the way out of the league. Good character from all accounts. Hasn't ever been mentioned as a "me" first kind of guy.Won't cost a lot of money. Better than Losman and Hamdan. Still has some upside too his career potentially. Sign Huard for two years at 3 million. Draft a project QB in rounds 4-6 to be a #3.

Interesting article on CNNSI.COM

Bring on Michael Vick to the Bills. I'm sure he'll be an excellent role model for Marshawn Lynch who needs nothing more than a quarterback that can bring his high character to our club. -
Bobby Carpenter- Overrated Played for Ohio State Can't tackle according to Bill Parcells No Thanks!

The Bills can sign Fred Jackson to an extension at a great price and get rid of Lynch. Lynch is done in Buffalo. He'll get at least a 4 game suspension from Goodell. Hit and Run coupled with felony charge in less than one year means Lynch is a bad egg. Just ask "I hate Buffalo and fathered 80 children with 80 women" McGahee and "I fought the law" Travis Henry. Wow! Buffalo's last three running backs are probably good friends with other honest and law-abiding athletes like Alex Rodriguez, Roger Clemens, Barry Bonds, Jason Giambi, and Miguel Tejada. With Lynch gone, the Bills will likely do worse this year, even though, Jackson isn't that much below Lynch in talent. Buffalo will get a higher pick in 2010 because of Lynch's actions. Bills can cut away the bad character of Lynch and Simpson and get rid of bloated contracts like Dockery's and Kelsays' Cut Lynch and his salary Cut Simpson, Dockery and Kelsay Resign Jackson at a reasonable price Bring in a veteran as a backup Draft a running back in rounds 4-7 to compete for the backup/#3 spot. Use the money on the cuts to Dockery and Kelsay for a quality center like Jason Brown and a LB like Karlos Dansby. --Nightcrawler

As long as Ralph Wilson, Russ Brandon, or Dickey Jauron have nothing to do with the draft, I'm sure our lists of team needs are likely to be fulfilled. I don't care who the Bills draft as long as they don't waste a pick in rounds 1-7 on a FB. There is no need for a FB in the Bills offense, and if there was, then Buffalo shouldn't pick up random guys off the street or from cut lists at the last minute to take up a roster spot. Bills needs: 1. Defensive Players (not too many on the current 53 man roster) 2. Offensive Players (not too many on the current 53 man roster) 3. No FB

Vince Young to Bills for a 3rd?
Nightcrawler replied to Chuckknox's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Nothing more to add about Vince Young. I wouldn't take him for a 6th or 7th round pick. He costs too much money, and as a Bills fan, I don't want to get excited if Vince Young has a "breakout" preseason game for the Bills against the Lions or Kansas City Chiefs. Then the boards will be flooded with posts about Vince Young being the starter and the answer for Buffalo's future. No thanks on Young. It's almost a 100% guaranteed that Vince Young will be out of the league in 2-3 years. -
Totally agree! It's the Pro Bowl. The players like the weather and the additional leverage of having "Pro Bowler" as an additional thing to throw it when mentioning a contract extension; otherwise, the defense and the players could care less. The truth is this...Marshawn Lynch is and always will be a 800-1,200 yards a year rusher as long as he is healthy over the next 5-6 years. He isn't a legitimate pro bowler, but he's an above average starter. He'll average 3.9-4.3 yards per carry for his career over the next few years. He isn't a top 10 running back in the league. He fall somewhere between the 13th-17th best running back in the NFL, and the Bills will draft another running back in the 1st round in 5-6 years.

How many more games do we win IF we replace
Nightcrawler replied to bananathumb's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Good question. The Bills have drafted fairly well in the last 5 years, but the team hasn't been able to draft that "game changing/franchise type of player." Yes, Lee Evans and Marshawn Lynch have been solid picks, but they aren't a top 7 player at their position in the league. I do see Buffalo having a legitimate shot at Birk, so this is a huge upgrade over Fowler/Preston at center. As much as I would love to see Buffalo trade Kelsay or release him in camp for salary cap purposes, I don't think it will happen. Yes, Peppers would be a gigantic upgrade at DE; however, answer this question: Can you really see Julius Peppers in a Bills uniform given our history and management's spending history? No! A TE as has been mentioned in many previous posts would help out Trent Edwards whose game seems to mirror the dink and dunk game of Chad Pennington. The Bills could easily find an upgrade in Rounds 1-3. Some posters believe free agent Bo Scaife is the answer. If you look at his stats the last 5 years you'll notice that he is only a marginal upgrade over Robert Royal. If the Bills do upgrade C/DE/TE, I expect a one game improvement. If the Bills play more consistently, get Evans the ball more by opening up the play book, and if management isn't so conservative with their corners playing 10 yards off of the ball. And, if the pass rush actually becomes legitimate, then Buffalo has a shot at the playoffs. That's a lot of IF'S. Low Expectation: 6-10/7-9 next year Everything comes together: 8-8/9-7. -
Will the Titans draft a DB again this year in Round 1?
Nightcrawler replied to Ramius's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
And we are talking about the Tennessee Titans because...??? I thought this was a Bills fan website. Hey, I know, do you think the Detroit Lions will draft a OG or a FS in the 5th round of this year's draft? The only true analysis between the Titans and Bills is what makes these two franchises different? Answer: Management and Coaching P.S. As a Bengals fan on this"Tennessee Titans" website, I think the Raiders will select a punter in the 4th round. -
Peters for McNabb, straight up?
Nightcrawler replied to Got_Wood's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This trade was plausible about 2 months ago with the McNabb benching, but Philadelphia's success coupled with McNabb's relationship with Andy Reid will never allow this to happen. Philadelphia currently is too smart of a franchise to even consider this as an option. -
Buffalo will select either Colt McCoy or Sam Bradford in 2010. With all the talent coming back, including Mays of USC and Gresham and Pryor of Ohio, Buffalo will probably end up selecting a quarterback. Edwards only has one year left to prove his worth as a starter. If by week #10 Buffalo is already under 500, start watching Bradford and McCoy more closely.

Kirk Chambers - not sure of his FA Status
Nightcrawler replied to OnTheRocks's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The information below was given by Buffalo Bills media man, Chris Brown on www.buffalobills.com. Unrestricted – Kirk Chambers, Angelo Crowell, Melvin Fowler, Jabari Greer, Teddy Lehman, J.P. Losman, Corey McIntyre, Duke Preston, Jason Whittle. Restricted – John DiGiorgio, Keith Ellison, Dustin Fox, Gibran Hamdan, Justin Jenkins, George Wilson. Chambers is an Unrestricted Free Agent (UFA). Because of his versatility, I think Buffalo should resign Chambers. I would give him middle of the road backup money for 3 years. He is our best backup linemen in my opinion. Granted, the Bills line isn't that good, but Chambers is a quality backup player. In fact out of all of all our free agents, I would say Chambers is one of top 3-4 free agents (Greer, Crowell, Chambers, and DiGiorgio). The Unrestricted we should try to retain: Chambers, Crowell (if healthy and if we don't get Karlos Dansby from Arizona), Greer (but I bet he signs somewhere else for starting money), and Duke Preston. I know he isn't a great backup C, but he is young and also plays guard. He can provide some depth as a backup. Besides, as many have mentioned on this site, the Bills will probably pursue both a veteran in free agency and a rookie in the draft at Center. It never hurts to have too many linemen. Let Go These Guys Lehman, Losman, McIntyre, and Whittle. As far as the restricted free agents, let go of Fox and Jenkins. Let Wilson fight it out for a roster spot. Hamdan is our third string quarterback for now and nothing more. DiGiorgio and Ellison should be backup linebackers and special teams players next year. -
No to Tank Johnson. Why spend a lot of money on a guy that is on his way to the downside of his career. Plus...we don't need more character-issue guys. We have Ko Simpson for that. Too much money any way for him.
-
Good thoughts. I'm high on Dansby and Brown as well. Both are under the radar players that simply "make plays." I like you free agents a little more than your draft. All our acceptable and well-though options, except I think Kenny Britt in Round #2 is a round or so to high. I guess we will see how well Buffalo listens to its new unofficial GM.
-
Not Matt Birk. If we get anyone on offense, get Jordan Gross, a consistent studly OT who also can play guard and is a younger than Birk. On defense, forget Crowell. Karlos Dansby, OLB of the Cardinals. Check out the age and stats. Check out the game against Falcons. Second leading tackler for his team, and he stopped a 3rd and 1, broke up a pass over the middle and took out the FB creating space for his DL teammate to make the sack on Matt Ryan for a safety. Focus on the draft. No one comes to Buffalo unless they are on perennial loser (Bengals--Takeo Spikes), get a ridiculous amount of money (Dockery) or they are an average-to-good but not great player looking for more opportunity (Langston Walker-Raiders, Kawika Mitchell, Giants.) With that in mind, Dansby is a legitimate shot. Jordan Gross is a huge outside possibility.

Right now, I would say it is a toss-up. Quarterback is definitely the more important of the two positions, but it is safe to say that "thus far" Whitner and Leinart both have underachieved for sure. From what I've read and heard from the media, I think Whitner is more mature out of the two. Leinart has come across as a "pretty boy" with a questionable work ethic and focus on the game. I remember watching this draft. One of the analysts (unfortunately I don't remember which one) said that Buffalo wasn't interested in Leinart for several reasons. 1) We still believed in Losman. (Yikes!) 2) The Bills didn't want to put a lot of money into another quarterback. (Makes sense plus adding Ralph Wilson into the equation). Buffalo wanted a quarterback with a stronger arm and could handle the cold weather home games at the end of the season. (Edwards appears to have the stronger arm, but he obviously also is a California quarterback.) I knew more about Leinart and I didn't think too highly of Losman when this draft was held, so I would've preferred Leinart to Whitner had I had the choice of drafting either one. Now, I think it is a wash. We really won't know until Leinart either shows he is a bust or until Kurt Warner is either injured/supplanted or retired. A great question. A better question to ask again in two years! --Nightcrawler

The quote that sent me over the edge
Nightcrawler replied to Kelso_Helmet's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
What should Robert Royal have said? Just look at Thomas Jones comments about Brett "The Legend" Favre. Some times you got to call out a coach or a teammate. It stirs the pot. For those that argue it is not okay to stir the pot, that person will likely mention the Cowboys. The difference between the Cowboys and Bills is the Cowboys lack mental toughness. The Bills lack both mental toughness and the talent to succeed. As others mentioned, notice that the guys that speak up from Jauron aren't starting material-Kelsay, Royal, and Butler. Butler is a backup that starts. Kelsay is an overpaid backup that starts. Royal is an injury prone backup that starts. MAN THIS TEAM FRUSTRATES ME!!! Get rid of: Jauron Move Brandon to Marketing again. He doesn't know the draft or player development. Get rid of offensive players: Royal Fowler Losman Jenkins Whittle Find some way to get out of the Dockery contract! Get rid of defensive players: Kelsay McCargo Corto Wilson -
Obviously there are a million details and responsibilities other than consistently having your team finish 7-9 every season that are the responsibilities of front office staff, GM, scouts, and coaches, but I wish forum members really had the listening ear of of forum members. Again, I realize my "wish" list can't account for salary cap dollars, every team's schemes, or the fact that there are 31 other teams vying their team's improvement too. With that in mind... My "wish" offseason. 1. Bills trade Jason Peters to Detroit for their 2nd and 3rd round pick. 2. Buffalo signs OT Jordan Gross. He's a Pro Bowl type player and is still only 28-29. 3. Buffalo signs Shaun McDonald, WR of Detroit. We won't get T.J. from Cincy, but McDonald and Reed would make a nice #2 and #3 receiver until Hardy or Johnson become starters or busts. He will be cheap and would be happy to be a #2 option in Buffalo after a 0-16 season. 4. Buffalo signs Karlos Dansby, LB for the Cardinals. Yes, he plays for a poor defense which increases his tackle numbers, but he has averaged 4-5 sacks the past 5 years or so and has had a few interceptions to go along with those tackles. He's a solid linebacker that isn't high profile. He's about 26-27 and would fit well replacing Crowell and keeping Bowen, Ellison and Constanzo as Buffalo's backups. 5. Buffalo makes an offer to Terrell Suggs. Just make an offer! The fans would be excited that the Front Office even tried. He'll sign somewhere else, and we won't get Haynesworth or Peppers, but at least it looks good. 6. Sign Jeff Garcia. I know he's old, but he's a crafty veteran who is a true professional. He's bounced around from team-to-team, but he's been an above average starter in this league for most of his career. He would be a good backup with veteran presence/leadership. 7. Lock up Fred Jackson to a contract now! Forget the whole FB thing. It is the biggest waste of roster spot. Don't draft one. Don't pick up one in free agency. Don't pickup one at waivers. Don't sign an undrafted free agent FB. If you get a FB, then pay top dollar for a top 5 veteran, but don't do that any way! With the holes now filled at a #2 quarterback, linebacker, WR, and OT, the Bills can focus their draft on the following: 1st Round- Everette Brown (DE Pass Rush Specialist) 2nd Round Detroit & 3rd Round Detroit (trade up) get Jermaine Gresham. 2nd Round Buffalo-(OC-Alex Mack) 3rd Round (BEST DE or DT available) 4th Round (SS or CB to fill in if Jabari Greer leaves or Bryan Scott) 5th Round (Quarterback...Gibran Hamdan is probably a nice guy, but take a gamble and get your backup to replace Jeff Garcia after a year in the system learning from Edwards and Garcia.) 6th Round (Best OG Available) 7th Round (Special Teams Guy...Bills always look for these guys. And it is never a waste in the 7th round)

It has to be a DE unless a top 2 OT falls to them...I'm going to go with Maybin out of Penn State. If he has a strong showing against USC, I think he has a legit shot of being a top 15 pick. I hear a lot of people saying Orakpo, but I don't have too much confidence in Texas players (i.e. Mike Williams (ouch!), Chris Simms, Cedric Benson, Ricky Williams, etc.) Which player and position would you choose? Obviously, workouts and medical reports we don't have access to, but what do you think and why. Bonus points for strong arguments for what players and position you would take on the 2nd and 3rd round. --Nightcrawler

Someone Tell me How can a coah keep his job if hes...
Nightcrawler replied to Poeticlaw's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Whether it's going to be 1-5 or 0-6, it doesn't matter. The most important games are always against divisional opponents. The only reason I can think of keeping Jauron would be for some type of "consistency" (whatever that word really means for a non playoff football team) or that there is really not an upgrade in a head coach available to Buffalo. Jauron should go...but unless Marty S., or Cowher are available and interested, I don't know. Singletary? I wish. Does Buffalo have any good connections with any top notch coordinators on some of the better teams in the NFL? As much as I would prefer Cowher or Marty S, let's expect Buffalo to get an unproven coach or keep Jauron. -
Sad guys...Only two thoughtful and well articulated points out of 12 responses. Saying someone is soft and stupid or that your comments are so superior that they can't be listed doesn't give any insight other than reflect the character of the respondent. Yes...I knew Detroit played in a dome, but research Williams stats in cold weather games and you'll see what I mean. And, yes I know Williams has had a down year. Keep in mind that it is the situation he has been in in Detroit's offense and in Dallas' off and on offense, not the talent or ability. Just look at the last three years he has had and his age with a lesser quarterback and line than Buffalo. Thanks to those who gave quality thoughts such as dickie do-right and Poeticlaw. For those who didn't, please write a post or response that "contributes" to the purpose of this forum. Thanks!

I know trade scenarios are fun to talk about. I also admit that the Cowboys may be hesitant to trade someone they just picked up this season, but Roy Williams would be a great fit for Buffalo. Here's why: Buffalo needs a legitimate #2 receiver as we all know. Buffalo wants a large receiver and Williams is 6'3. Buffalo needs a possession receiver. Williams until landing in Dallas can find the end zone but also has been productive on 2nd and 3rd down situations. Williams also played in Detroit's cold weather, so the Buffalo weather shouldn't be much of an adjustment. Buffalo should trade their 2009 (2nd and 6th round picks) and Roscoe Parrish for Williams. Dallas would consider the trade for several reasons: First, Dallas without a first round pick doesn't pick until mid to late 2nd round. Jerry Jones is a gambler, and he loves having extra draft picks for trading up and down. A 2nd and 6th round pick gives Dallas draft options. Williams is talented, but he seems to not fit the Dallas circus with all the needs to get Owens, Witten, and Barber the ball. Lastly, Dallas can't truly depend on Adam "Pac Man" Jones to be a long-term fit as a PR. Roscoe Parrish is a solid PR, and he serves another need for Dallas to have extra depth as a 4-5 receiving option in their offense. I believe this trade is both realistic and fits both teams needs. Buffalo needs another offensive weapon to move toward becoming a better offense. Dallas needs draft picks and could use the extra depth to be a playoff threat again. Thoughts?

Normal Bills December - offseason predictions!
Nightcrawler replied to timstep's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Charlie Batch...no! I know we are looking for a backup, and yes, he has proven valuable in the past...but that was a long while ago. Nope, no Charlie. T.J. is a great complement and probably the truest #2 receiver in the game. A great possession receiver, but he isn't going to look at Buffalo. I like Suggs and Crowder. Suggs won't come cheap. He'll expect top 5 DE money. I only see this happening if Buffalo let's Kelsay go and Suggs has some kind of connection with some players on the Bills roster and/or ownership. Crowder would be nice to have and is the most realistic out of all of these ideas.
