Maybe GB's Defense is statistically worse than ours, but they haven't given up as many points, which lose games. We do need a great QB, but we have to stop the point hemorrhaging first. Fitz scored 21 points on the Pats in the first quarter, for goodness sake. If we have ANY kind of defense, that holds pretty well and we are not taking chances that result in the picks later on. The game is played on both sides of the ball and when you get to the playoffs, defense still matters (a lot). The Pats will play ONE playoff game this year.

My biggest grip is that the team always seems unready to play at game start. Seems like every game the opposition scores on their first possession and we go an ugly 3 and out. The D is never ready for the other team's game plan and I suspect it's the players and position coaches who make adjustments on the fly while Edwards remains lost. For those who want Chan to run more, I can sympathize, but it's only been recently that CJ has shown he can make it past the line of scrimmage w/o going down. I do have to scratch my head about his love of the spread offense w/o a QB who runs the ball a lot...

Chan's offensive Choice s this season
flmike replied to bowery4's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Where to start on this? I agree with other posters that CJ is not an every down back, yet. May never be. I think Chan would keep him in the backfield on passing downs, but he still can't pick up a blitz or gets mowed down when he tries. That's where we really miss Fred. Choice gets in there because he is simply better at getting one or two yards up the gut. Even then... Some of the pass plays to Choice and CJ were on Fitz for poor throws or on the backs for being in the wrong place on a timing route. Do you really want to see Brad Smith failing on the Wildcat more? Chan had enough, that's for sure. He can't run and he can't throw the ball. Oh yes, he's not a good receiver, either. They put in that cross-field pass to him and ran it a million times before giving up on it. He's actually pretty useless on this team. Now, I do think that Chan is over enamored with the spread offense, but that's what they have this year. You can only add so many plays during a week of practice. Folks, we just need some more talent and fewer injuries. I still think Fitz is nursing a painful injury. When he ran on Sunday, I had to tip my cap to him. He's a fighter, but I wonder if he is a leader. His hang-dog looks during the game bring his teammates down, no doubt. -
They kept trying that cross-field pass to Smith that he never caught. I wonder if he can pass. Fitz needs to sit for a while.

Latest SI QB rankings out. Fitz smack dab
flmike replied to Chandler#81's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I knew Fitz was playing hurt the game after the Fletcher shot. We'll have to wait for next season anyway. My only real knock on him is that he won't audible sometimes. -
Wasn't it Polian who traded Greg Bell for those great Bills players? He might do that again.

9) Sorry, but Jim Kelly would have torn Roosevelt a new one. Maybe that's the difference.

early returns on the drafted 2010 QBs

What were the rankings of the defenses of those Super Bowl teams? -
What does the team need going into next season?
flmike replied to Poeticlaw's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
2. Brandon Jenkins / DE-OLB / Florida St. 3. Xavier Rhodes / CB / Florida St. I'm a Noles fan, but I would not draft any CB from FSU. They got torched this year. Jenkins is good, but there are better choices. The FSU defense for all its hype this year could not keep the team in its big games. -
I watched him a lot and saw him get quite a few. Not sure how that can happen.

Wow, nothing like comparing apples to oranges. I've been watching Dareus and I think he has done a great job as rookie. Newton, Miller and Green are specialty players who SHOULD make an impact. We got Dareus to firm up the run defense (right?) and then switched his position mid-season. Opposing defenses are taking him out with double teams and doing their best to account for Barnett. That's ALL they have to worry about. Put Williams back in there and stick to a 4-3 and Dareus will look better. Right now he is playing his first pro year in a position he did not play in college with almost no help in a team game. Exactly what were you expecting from one guy in his position? BTW the Bills have a knack for taking good college players and making them look bad.

Jerry Sullivan - Show Stevie The Money
flmike replied to BuffaloBillsForever's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
You guys can wish that SJ will return for #2 money, but some stupid team will pay him to be a #1. Oakland might believe he fits their bad-boy image or something. The Bills, however, have a bad penchant for letting guys walk w/o anyone to replace them. Easley's injuries may have forced them to re-sign SJ... -
The Official Bills at Jets Game Thread

What about those lousy passes by Fitz near the end of the half? His expression said that he meant to throw those. What up? -
Dareus is going to be a great player in this league. Right now he is only factor on the DL and teams are taking him out of the picture. Did you guys really expect him to dominate with no help? They switched his position a couple of games ago, and it looked like a good move until Williams went down. Get Kyle back in there and watch Dareus flourish.

Robert, join us at Miller's Jupiter Ale House in Jupiter, FL sometime for a game. Lots of Bills Backers there. BTW it's probably best to post from a computer, not a smart phone. Us old timers still rely on paragraphs and such.
-
You have to give him a realistic chance. Right now he has no line and no receivers and I really suspect that he is hurt more from that hit he took a few weeks ago than anyone knows. No one on the team is 100% except Spiller and that's even more worrisome.
-
Except for the KC and Wash games, this team has been lousy in the first half. It's finally catching up to them. There is some really poor planning going on for each game. I like Gailey, but I have to wonder why his boys are never ready for a game.
-
That doesn't mean that the stubborn old coot won't continue to make it.
-
He may also be trying to make the point that an NFL team can win w/o spending the bazillions that Jones and others spend. Well, at the least the Redskins have proven that you can still lose after spending a lot. Anyway, while his succession plans don't please any of us, it is his team and we don't have to buy his product. I'm sure he'd rather have the prestige of being an NFL owner than a bigger pile of cash at this point (personally). He knows that his heirs don't want it, so he is setting it up so that they max their profit on it.
-
Sorry, it's not the same team we saw earlier. We have, what? 12 guys on IR? Maybe F. Jackson doesn't play next week, either. We were thin to start the season and now we are down to practice squad guys. I hope they make it a game next week, but there is no reason to think the outcome will differ from the last 3 weeks. The score may be higher with McGee out again. It's really disappointing to have such a high number of injuries again. The rest of the league is dealing with this too, but we just have no depth. It's going to take at least 2 more good drafts, maybe 3, to fix a decade of crappy drafting. I'm not ready to throw Gailey under the bus yet - Lombardi couldn't win with this team - but he has to show some imagination to get the offense going again, because the defense is not going stop giving up huge numbers.
-
Agreed. Bad run of injuries and no depth in the defense can sink your season pretty quickly. I understand that Fitz has a patchwork line, but no. 1 QB has to make something happen and LEAD. I don't really see them winning another game, either. 2008 redux.

Are the Bills the Chicago Cubs of the NFL?
flmike replied to Since 1972's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm also a Bills/Cubs fan. It can be very tough sometimes... -
Giants held the ball forever. Can't run Thurman when you don't have the ball and you're playing from behind late. It was amazing that we got to the outer limits of Norwood's range at the end.
-
Don't forget that it was the Bills who knocked Simms out of playing in the Super Bowl against them. If they hadn't done that, they might have won that game! They were not ready for Hostetler.
