  1. I seem to remember hearing 'don't worry about the offense' last preseason after the starting unit couldn't score a touchdown. It still remained a theme the entire year. After last year, and all the years before, I reserve the right to be as critical of preseason performances as I please.

  2. Yes it was the Washington game. I don't want to split hairs with you and I understand the point you are making. One play in particular caused me to have a different view of Meredith than you did. Unfortunately I erased my tape of the game but I believe it was on a pass play to Lynch in the left flat where London Fletcher tackles Lynch and drives him out of bounds. Look at the replay and watch how Meredith pushes the pass rusher to the ground with one arm. It was very impressive.

At any rate, I appreciate your passion for the Bills.

I could just be way too pessimistic to recall the good, but I'm glad it's there. I hope to see more of what you describe than what I remember! We pessimists need balance from the optimists to remind us it's not all dark and dreary.

If I came off as attacking you personally at all I do apologize. It is much easier to discuss when you're not attacking or being attacked by the person you're talking with. I can't fault anybody who enjoys football and specifically the Bills as much as I do, even if our opinions differ.

  3. Trent rarely looks downfield period. That's the problem.

Orakpo is a pass rusher, and a good one at that, so he's going to keep coming. But just because he's around the QB, it doesn't mean that he's getting pressure per se.

They addressed the interior of the OL in last year's draft. And there were no great prospects available at LT last year when the Bills turn came to draft, and even the guys taken in front of their position have largely been disappointing (they were set at RT with Butler, who got injured and then retired, and also had Walker at that time, who could have gone back to RT). This past draft again the prospects weren't all that great, and none of them, outside of Trent Williams (and probably Okung, but they were taken 4th and 6th overall), is starting at LT.

I agree that he's a good pass rusher and I agree that just being around a QB isn't a pressure. When your QB is getting up off the ground more often than not, he's being pressured.

  4. Not sure if you and I were watching the same game. I watched and rewatched the first 2-3 offensive series for the Bills focusing on LT and RG. I thought Meredith did just fine and was actually dominant on a couple of plays. In fact it was one of the few things that encouraged me about the game.

The game I watched was Friday vs. Washington. I haven't rewatched the game but I know I was not impressed. He was the one playing LT correct? What I recall seeing was him getting decent initial contact but guys being able slide off and get around him on the outside.

  5. Chambers shouldn't be playing, but with Bell and Green out, he had to be pressed into duty. Just because he started last year shows how bad the O-line situation was. Howard shows promise, but isn't ready. And there was some pressure from the left side but it was hardly "consistent."

I know what you're trying to get at, but he's a good pass-rusher. If Meredith was "getting beat consistently," Trent would have been sacked at least once, or even hurried.

Alright, maybe consistent wasn't the right word but it was more often than it should. I won't excuse the poor play but I do accept your reasoning.

  6. I was thinking the same thing as the Bills lost both Jackson and Lynch to injuries, and when they went down it screwed the running game and protections.

But then again isn't that what an offensive minded HC was supposed to do, make the offensive passing game better so they can convert those 3rd downs?

Stop making it harder to come up with excuses please. Thanks

  7. Meredith played RT last year, although he wasn't a major problem the other night, as he kept Orakpo off the stat sheet (except for an assisted tackle), and Chambers, while he started last year (due to injury), was horrible last year and the other night. Howard is an UDFA rookie. So yes, there are excuses.

Meredith started off on the left and was beat consistently from that side. I watched him specifically and he was the cause of a lot of pressure. If Chambers is truly so awful he shouldn't be playing. Howard I have no critique of and wasn't really focusing on.

  8. and we averaged over 8 yards per carry on the ground ( opponent 3.4 )

Washington ran the ball 41 times to our 18 and we still out rushed them,

I was very happy with the run blocking. It was the pass blocking that disturbed me. If it becomes a one dimensional offense other teams will just start stacking the box.

  9. From what I saw of the Bills offense on Friday night....it looked basically the same offense we have seen since forever. What I expected from a new offensive minded HC was to crap-can the offensive playbook like Mike Shanhan would have, and have the players learn an entire new offensive system.

From what I saw that didn't happen, the Bills ran the same old system, same plays only with a different language. It now makes sense to me as to why Chan Gailey is keeping the incumbent QB's and didn't draft a Clausen-McCoy et al. Clearly he thinks he can coach up the current players to a higher level and is taking the very same road that Jauron took in thinking continuity.

What he doesn't understand is that although AVP and Turk Schonert were both very inexperienced at play calls and game planning, they both were very experienced at understanding the QB position and coaching that position.

From hearing Gailey talk he is under the impression that Dick Jauron's teams lacked discipline and didn't play hard. On the contrary the Bills players played very tough and hard for Jauron, if anything the problem with his teams is they lacked great schemes, both offensive and defensive.

From the one game we all saw Chan Gailey didn't bring anything new and innovative into the stale old podunk offense us fans have had to endure since the Kim Kelly-Ted Marchibroda era. Before Friday's Game I was slightly uncertain as to whether or not Spiller would have the impact Gailey boasted he would have in making that O line better simply by adding a blazing RB. Now I'm almost 100% certain his offenses won't succeed until they upgrade both tackle positions, and forget about adding any new QB until they do.

If you think I'm wrong...take a long hard look at the Rams this season with a 50 million dollar guaranteed QB in Sam Bradford, money that team can flush if he gets severely injured.

Lastly, go back and look at what success Gailey had at Kansas City running that offense...then you will know what to expect this year from the Bills.

From what Chan said he was going to run a lot of two back sets with Lynch and Jackson but unfortunately those early injuries really stalled that plan. I'm not upset with what the offense was trying to do as much as I am upset with how they were doing it. 1/10 on third down conversions. You'll never win like that.

  10. All these QB threads we're seeing are pointless, imo.

The Bills were completely incapable of protecting the QB off the edges last year and with no significant upgrades will once again be completely incapable of protecting the QB off the edges this year. There's not a single QB on this planet who can be successful operating behind this Offensive Line and our crop of BList signal callers is no exception. I don't care who is anointed the starter because no matter which guy it is, he is going to struggle moving the offense until he is inevitably hurt and then replaced by the next guy who will be dealing with the same set of insurmountable circumstances.

The front office doesn't see any of these guys as a long term solution to the position, which is part of the reason they chose to primarily address the defense this offseason. Addressing the OT and TE positions will come in the next step of the rebuild when they will be looking for a QB that they can hang their hats on.

So we can go round and round arguing about who's the better QB, but the fact is that it doesn't matter one lick who the Bills starting QB is this year. Whoever it is will only be the #1 for a relatively short time, serving as no more than an interchangeable part until the Bills bring in the guy they plan to go forward with.

Indeed the line is the key!

People seem to be throwing around the sacks stat as if it means everything. Nobody can tell me you didn't see our QB's running for their lives in that first preseason game. How many stats did the Skins have? zero. Tons of pressure. All game except for the first drive and towards the end of the game. I guess it's just a coincidence that during that time the offense looked alright.

We may have been running with most of our backup O-line, but we all know that Kirk Chambers has seen some pretty significant time the last couple years and Meredith got more than his feet wet last year. If these are the guys on the roster then they had better be able to perform. No excuses.

  11. I've been reading through the threads lately and all i see is " oh the bills will suck" or " Trent sucks" or " There is no hope".

Guys. Relax. It's the first preseason game for crying out loud. There are still 3 more preseason games to go. I guarantee that if we light it up in Toronto against Indy, everyone will be talking about us going unbeaten.

After watching this, here are some reasons on why we shouldntt panic just yet:

    1. Our backups on D wont all be on the field during the regular season like today. I hope.

    2. 3 o-line starters not playing.

    3. Lynch and Jackson only played like half of the first quarter.

    4. Edwards has nowhere to go but up after his performance today.

    5. Our new coach might actually fix some of our mistakes

    6. Steve Johnson looked pretty good, and will be the 2nd receiver

    7. Poz, our best linebacker, didnt play.

    8. There are still 3 more preseason games left to play

    9. As my saying goes, in order to succeed, you must fail.

    10. If Edwards can improve, and i think he will, the whole team will improve

It was definitely the first preseason game, and hopefully the team only gets better from here.

By the end of the first quarter, I found myself saying 'God they're getting Trent killed already." I was watching Meredith at LT for most of the offensive possessions and he was getting beat consistently. Bell had better be a huge upgrade or else it will be a familiar theme through the season.

The QB play reaffirmed what I saw last year. With good blocking Trent is the more consistent QB. With poor blocking Fitzgerald has more of an ability to make something happen. I liked what I saw from the running game, so I really hope they stick with that more often than passing.

I liked what I saw from Steve Johnson, David Nelson, and Naaman Roosevelt. I was hoping to see Marcus Easley get some time. How come he wasn't suited up?

The defense started off strong, but were getting gassed pretty quick due to the offensive 3 and outs.

I'd like to see our big three stand up blockers a bit better. Saw lineman sliding off and getting to the second level fairly easily. Still didn't see much of a pass rush. Maybin still looks like a boy playing with men. The Skins QBs had plenty of time to wait for the open receiver.

I'd like to see how Arthur Moats does next game. He was a step behind on a bunch of plays, and I think once he reacts instead of thinking then reacting he'll be fine.

I liked Dontes big hit on Cooley, but was kind of disappointed by his cockiness afterwards. Not because it wasn't a good hit, but Cooley still caught the ball for a pretty decent gain... he didn't prevent the completion so why celebrate? Once Reggie Corner finds his rhythm he'll grab a few picks.

There were still many costly penalties on both sides of the ball. That needs to get cleaned up just like it did last year. Still have a ridiculous number of injuries and again had a bunch of guys go out during the game. Both the offense and defense were plain BAD on third down. The team won't go anywhere if it can't convert on third down and the defense on the field the whole game.

  12. Only because you've never heard of him. Consider the possibility that your football knowledge is more limited that guys who do this for a living.

    BLASPHEMER!

We actually did need to address the WR position. The guy has the physical traits but only started showing production in his senior year. CBS has him rated at the 13th best WR and NFL.com has him rated at 5.'something low'.

From what I'm reading I feel like it was a bit of a reach, but I can't complain with addressing another need.

  13. The Bills picked up a true offensive threat that needs to be planned for. I'm going to try to be optimistic and hope he's like Chris Johnson running the ball and Reggie Bush catching the ball.

Just because we didn't address any of our major needs at 9 doesn't mean there aren't still talented players at those positions still available. I do NOT know how Nix can say they still have no plan on moving Marshawn. He's problematic off the field, taking up cap space, losing play time, and could be turned into draft picks so we can keep addressing our need positions.

  14. Take one drink whenever somebody says:

    'On the clock'

    'War room'

    'High character guy'

    'High motor guy'

    'Intangibles'

    'Upside'

    'Work Ethic'

    calling a pick a 'reach'

when the Bills are mentioned outside of their draft slot

    Take two drinks whenever:

Somebody talks about the Big Ben suspension/scandal

    The Dolphins Pick

    The Pat* Pick

    The Jets Pick

When a clip of Jets fans booing at previous draft picks are shown

    Finish your beer when:

    The BILLS PICK!

Tim Tebow is picked (x12 if picked by the bills)

Just what I've though of so far. Additions?

  15. A friend of mine who seems to get some inside info from god knows where says don't be surprised if Kurt Warner winds up in Buffalo. Seems out of the question to me but who knows? Anybody think that would be a good move?

While it would definitely be a good move for the Bills, it would be an awful move for Warner. He'd be going from a playoff contender to a bottom of the division team. He'd go from a mediocre line to a not so good line, which is a bad move for a guy with concussion issues. He'd go from a receiving trio of Fitzgerald, Boldin, Breaston to Evans, Hardy, Johnson. He's at the end of his career and if he comes back, won't be looking at a rebuilding effort.

I like the idea of him being a Bill, I just can't envision any reason why he'd come here.

  16. I say QB.

I think mistakes can more easily be hidden by exceptional QB play than the opposite. Find a franchise trigger-man and build around him.

You draft the franchise QB if he's available but you don't start him until you have a line that can protect him.
