  1. I realize this, and accept it (especially the hindsight bit), but this is where you and I will always fundamentally disagree. I do not think that the fear of the unknown, when it comes to your own citizens, justifies bringing military vehicles into the mix. I can see why you feel otherwise. And thanks for the answer regarding the Brinks truck, it's appreciated.
  2. I don't mind saying that when you need one of these things, you need it really badly. My problem with it is this: these things are also being used when they're most certainly not needed. Barricaded armed suspect? Fine. Serving an arrest warrant? I don't think so. There are situations that call for the police to act as a paramilitary force, but they are few and far between. And Tom's post raised a question in my mind: why a combat car and not a Brinks truck? Aren't they both armored? Maybe you can answer that for me, BB27, being in law enforcement and all.
  3. Well, obviously, that's the first choice
  4. Almost forgot: The first album released by The Darkness is brilliant.
  5. Since billsfan89 hasn't come around to champion The Gaslight Anthem yet, I'll do it for him. All three albums are worth a listen; I really enjoy their second album, "The '59 Sound." Band of Horses is one of my favorite "new" bands - they're great live, too. I second The Black Keys. For me, Guster is hit or miss, but I know some people really enjoy them. Against Me! is a new-ish punk-ish band that I enjoy. I also enjoy: The National The Ruse The Soundtrack of our Lives The Antlers Beirut The Cat Empire
  6. That's why I said the article kind of sucked. It's not my title. My big issue, as I stated in my OP (which you conveniently ignored, but I could have predicted that) is this: Except I don't think it just creates "a sense" of police as military soldiers; I think that, in general, police forces are becoming groups that are more inclined toward military-like operations rather than keeping order and peace. And?
  7. The article kind of sucks, but you get the idea: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/41912754/ns/technology_and_science-tech_and_gadgets/t/why-do-americas-police-need-armored-tank/ I, for one, am not in favor of our local PDs being paramilitary forces (although this seems to be the case already). What do you guys think? Oh, almost forgot, my favorite line:
  8. Fixed. Criminy, I come back to this place after a short while and you all turn into a bunch of pansies In all seriousness, here's my favorite (stolen from Food & Wine) 1 ounce vodka 1/2 ounce ginger liqueur 3 ounces peach puree or nectar Crushed ice 1 ounce chilled ginger beer In a highball glass, combine the vodka, ginger liqueur and peach puree; stir. Add crushed ice and stir again. Top with the ginger beer and swizzle by spinning a swizzle stick or bar spoon between your hands. You can garnish it with slices of peach, if you wish to be the host with the most.
  9. He deserved to have his iPod confiscated for listening to Nelly Furtado. She is hot though: http://mynellyfurtado.com/im//2010/11/new.jpg
  10. Same here. I got a couple of in-school suspensions as well. Brought some music and borrowed a friend's Game Boy, got my work done in about an hour and chilled out for the rest of the day.
  11. That is nuts. But please, as if the "freedom toast" and "freedom fries" movements were any less nuts.
  12. You got that from the Wikipedia article on DC Tom, didn't you?
  13. I think there's plenty of justice there.
  14. Make that a +3. RIP to a great man. For those of you wondering why he didn't choose assisted suicide for himself, there are probably a number of reasons, including his reportedly being pain-free in the hospital up to and including the time of his death.
  15. You have my condolences and thoughts as well, Mead.
  16. So you link to a reddit page that tells you how you can access all this illegal **** without consequence. You could have been a little more subtle.
  17. I haven't had any issues with Malware on my Mac, so I'm not sure how well these hold up in a crisis, but... I use something called iAntiVirus, and have been very happy with it. It doesn't use a ton of resources, and scans are relatively quick. I've heard good things about something called Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac, which is available at the Apple Store online. Both are free: Cnet page for iAntivirus Sophos on the Apple website
  18. And that's why I have anti-virus software on my PC and my Mac.
  19. Same from me.
  20. Missed this since my head has been 3 feet up my own ass nowadays. Happy belated mo'fuggin birthday, AJ!
  21. Lots of people feel that way, but I'm sorry; nobody beats Tom Baker as the Doctor.
  22. Who's falling all over themselves? You and Dante seem to have this delusion that everyone who posted in this thread aside from you two are completely worked up over this guy dying, when in reality every post in this thread before Dante's first were about his work or his addiction. There's no evidence of real grief whatsoever, but you want to extrapolate from appreciation for his work that Buftex, AJ, etc. are crying over this guy. Express your feelings all you want, but (1) do it in a matter that is relevant and (2) don't try to pretend that you know the objective importance of one life over another.
  23. What, so when a friend or family member of ours kills his/herself, whether directly through suicide or indirectly through addictions they can't seem to shake, you can chime in and say how unimportant they were to you (because, let's be honest here, a friend of mine you've never met is not going to be any more or less important to you than some Hollywood druggie)? No thanks. Piss off.
