SAT (yes that one) to add adversity scoring
LeviF replied to BeginnersMind's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
I laughed pretty good at me as a golf coach. The situation is somewhat reversed, but it still applies. I don't deny that adverse life circumstances can affect standardized test scores. I deny the idea that these factors affect all people in the same, measurable way. We can throw statistics around all we want but growing up poor and going to a high school with no AP curriculum doesn't bring the same amount of "adversity" to each person, just like being ugly or pretty doesn't affect everyone the same way. Kids of the same age can grow up next door to each other, each in a four person family that includes a single mom who is chronically unemployed, and not experience the same amount of "adversity." Yet according to the chart in the article they would receive the same "adversity score." The other issue with this is that it's really just a preening virtue signal from College Board. Colleges can ignore it if they want, they can use it if they want, but at the end of the day it has no effect on your actual combined SAT score (similar to the writing portion they added some time ago), just like it won't have any effect on your ability to do well in college. Colleges also already have ways of capturing this information in their application process (like they capture writing ability with the admissions essay). College Board doesn't care if a poor black child gets into Harvard, they care about their image in our hyper-PC culture. If they cared that much, they'd give away their SAT prep books by the dozens at "undermatching" high schools. One's math and reading scores on the SAT and one's ability to do well at university both come down to three things, in my estimation: brain power, willingness to prepare/put in the work, and quality of previous education. Exactly one of these is up to the student. Sucks to suck, life isn't fair; but adversity, measurable or not, doesn't prepare you for the academic rigor of higher education, and it certainly doesn't prepare you to pay off the massive debt that comes after you flunk out. -

She just takes all the civilian boys she didn't kill and castrates them for the photo op. -
If I didn't know that PTR was a giant I'd say you were short. Well, you're still short, but not as much as the picture implies.

They got to re-live an old TBD-ism. That one goes a way back. All in good fun. -

You miss my point. Do I disagree with Danny's actions? Not necessarily. But do I think it's a surprise that she showed extreme cruelty with malice in this episode? Based on what I said above, no. My point was she's always been like this, and had no issue with killing people we might think of as "innocent" very early in the show. -

This is just off the top of my head and all from the show: Tells the Thirteen at Qarth that she will "burn cities to the ground" when her dragons are grown. Jorah attempts to get her to use some restraint, but that loser Xaro who wanted to bang her lets her into the city to his peril. She eventually locks him in his own safe presumably to starve. Orders her new slave army to slaughter every slaver in Astapor. Crucifies scores of people at Mereen. Barristan tries unsuccessfully to talk her out of that. Burns every Khal alive in season 6 (one could argue that this was self-defense of sorts). Threatens to crucify slavers again in season 6 and lay waste to the cities in the bay. Tyrion talks her out of it. Season 7 Tyrion is unable to talk her out of burning alive Lord Tarly and his only son with claim to his estate. Repeatedly, and I mean repeatedly, states that she will sack and burn King's Landing. She is talked out of it several times, only to defy all of her advisors at the last minute. Likely her plan all along. -

Turning heel?! She's been a homicidal maniac since season 2. The only difference is this season there is nobody strong-willed or with the stones to reign in her worst instincts. The coin landed a long time ago, she is and has been the Mad Queen. The books are more instructive on this topic, so I'm a bit biased in that regard, but anybody who didn't see this coming has a remarkably short memory and/or likes boobies and blonde hair enough to have selective blindness when it comes to the Dragon Queen. -
Bigger chokers than the Jim Kelly Bills?

Watching him throw the football is magical. Only way I can describe it. I hate the ***** Dolphins but I love watching old tape of Marino. Quite possibly the most pure talent of any QB ever. -

Not a bad submission. Much better golfer than his career wins (PGA tour and majors) list would indicate. How many 2nd place finishes did he have in majors? Ten? This 6ers team though, dear Lord. Doesn't get big in the paint (5 offensive rebounds vs. 16 for Toronto), can't shoot threes when it counts (Joel 1-6 from deep in game 7, Butler 1-6 too I think). Joel moved like a fat kid in gym class in the fourth quarter. Awful to watch. -

How can you learn that if, from the age of 5, a court has made your father a "visitor" in your life that you see once every two weeks and your entire educational system is based around the needs of girls/women and perpetuated by mostly 20- and 30-something feminist shrikes? The human mind can only take so much. -
You know when you won't be saying that? When your head is rolling down a flight of stairs (after being lopped off by an AI supersoldier), that's when.
-
The road to hell is paved with the bodies of people run down by their own intelligent self-driving electric cars.
-
If you think humans are bad, just wait until you see unfettered, self-sustaining AI.
