Seriously though, what is the appeal? I've asked this of a lot of my friends and I never get a solid answer.

Oh god, if people spent as much time opining for themselves as they do complaining about the media then we all really would be football experts. Why does it matter to you that ESPN spends more energy reporting on Owens than Evans?
I'd argue it's used mostly for comedic affect. Is it the same as !@#$ in that white people are allowed to say it but others aren't? Personally, words are just words and those who take offense to a word (and not the tone/connotation behind it) are strung a bit too tightly.
See, if you watched PBS or listened to NPR, you'd know that the word you are looking for is "informative". NPR is almost as informative as watching PBS.
