  1. First we develop Winfield , then Clements, then Greer and we lsoe them for nothing then have to re-draft new guys that we can then train and develop and then leave. Drives me crazy. Not even mentioning Leohnard.

Its not that simple...Antoine Winfield got what was a rediculous contract at that time for a DB who had showed much less in being a defensive playmaker than he had as a great tackler for the position. He had been good for us, but his lack of ball skills (INTS) didnt warrant the contract he got. I will say, of all the guys though, he was the one I liked the best and wanted to keep, but he was over paid. He did however live up to his contract as he got better IMO.

Clements got a contract he will never live up to. He was a better playmaker but not as complete as Winfield is IMO, and his contract was comical. He wouldnt be worth that same contract in todays market as its so absurd.

Greer was the victim of circumstance. Unfortunately, he didnt step into his own until we already had Leodis. Last year was the first year Greer really proved he is a starter in this league, but it was too late. We already had a first round pick and a lot of money in Leodis who really started to show he is going to be a very good player in this league.

People keep talking like we intentionally let the DB's walk, but when a player wants more money than he warrants at the time, the FO (who knows the player a lot more than we do) has to decide is he worth overpaying. Why do you think the Titans let Haynesworth go...because his contract was absurd.

One player doesnt make a team great, and if you keep over paying for players you will lose 2 or 3 good players at other postions. The Pats and Steelers are perfect examples...they never over pay so they can keep a much more balanced team. And its no coincidence they keep winning SB's...same with Parcell teams...you dont see him throwing stupid money at players either...

I am very confident the FO will extend McGee and we will have a very good set of CB's for the next few years at least.

Youboty does look promising too, add in Corner and Cary and I think we have the makings a very good and young core of CB's.

  2. Dean makes a good point about the preparation or lack of on game day. I don't think it is coincidental that Edwards struggled much more against 3-4 teams than the 4-3 teams. I think a lack of gameday preparation from the coaching staff and the weak interior O Line had as much to do with that than the play of Edwards. It was his first full year under the center and it was Schonerts first year as OC as well. My guess is that they will address that this year, which they all ready have in adding Hangartner, Levitre and Wood, and I believe that they will game plan much more intensely in being more effective against 3-4 alignments that drop back more DB's into coverage. Edwards seems to be a very intelligent QB and I believe he will recognize open Receivers more effectively than last year.

Come on guys, you are really stretching now in defense of Trent. You are blaming gameday preperation without any first hand knowledge of how much game day preperation they do. You are speculating excuses to justify Trents struggles rather than letting Trent shoulder those struggles. Thats the stuff that frustrates me so much about the Trent defense. Sure our coaching staff made some mistakes out there last year, but Trent made so many terrible decisions on the field, so many bad throws, and when he had guys wide open he didnt find them as he panicked and checked down way too much when he was struggling.

I am going to give Trent the benefit of the doubt that this was due to lack of experience and part of his struggles as a young QB and hope he can over come this in 09, but that is not the fault of DJ, and Trent gets to shoulder those struggles and hopefully grow from them.

Having played football all the way through college, I would be a fool if I said the coaching staff wasnt important, so I am definitely not saying that. But, what is lost in all of this is the fact that Trent was not even close to a good decidsion maker last year despite what you want to believe.

A friend of mine who is a LB coach in the NFL told me that the best way to rattle Trent was to bring some pressure and take away his hot route because he is not fast enough in his progessions yet to find other options while under any kind of pressure. He said he actually likes the kid and thinks Trent can blossom, but said until he can progress through his reads faster and gain confidence in his reads to make throws to where the WR will be before he even gets there, then he will continue to struggle.

Now back to the comments about preperation. People I know in the NFL cirlces who have first hand knowledge of him have always said the opposite of what you are claiming. So, I dont understand how people who have no first hand knowledge of how they prepare for a game can say he isnt properly preparing his team as an excuse for how poorly Trent played in the second half of last year.

  3. Are we supposed to making a case for Trent? I thought we were responding to a dumbass post about his ability to throw for 300 yards, as if that is something important in the NFL.

I try to be a realist about Trent, the way I would be about any QB for the Bills. When the coaches start calling a competent game, and the QB fails to execute that plan at a competent level, then I will judge the Bills' QB harshly. Until then, we really don't know what we have. We know some of his strengths and weaknesses, but QBs with greater weaknesses have been successful in the NFL, in the past.

I'm still amused you think we should take a thread this stupid seriously.

lol, relax dean, no offense was intended..I was poking fun in the post, so wasnt taking it that serioulsy either in my response to yours. I just found it amusing that people were debating this guy could be a 300 yard guy when he has only 1 game with 300 yards since high school.

I pretty much agree with you that we dont know what we have...he has stregnths and weaknesses, and people with his weaknesses have been succesful in the NFL. However, it is put up or shut up this year for him, and if he plays like last year we wont make the playoffs.

  4. thats true--show me a 300 yard throwing day and i'll show you the QB of the losing team

Im calling your bluff...show me, because thats ludricrus...Kurt Warner has a lot of them and a heck of a lot in his super bowl years and you can add Manning, Brady, Farve, and McNabb all to that list amongst others. Sure, they may be exceptions where a QB like Cutler goes off but the defense gives up 45 points and they still lose, but a 300 yard QB is a very good thing and I am sure it equals more wins than losses...

In other words, all the top QB's are likely to throw for 300 yards on any given day, and I would be willing to bet that they win a lot more than they lose when they have thrown for 300 yards...

No offense inteded, but it sure sounds like you just pulled that out of your ass with that one to help soften the blow in the TE discussion becuase he has only one 300 yard game since High School, yes, High School...just one...and none in the NFL...

FYI: During that span since High School of only one 300 yard game, Trent has a losing record and nearly half his games have been under 200 yards in the pros...

Here is a way more accurate statement...you show me a QB who throws for under 200 yards and I will show you the QB of the LOSING team...

  5. ...with some very notable exceptions, of course. But, it is unlikely the Bills are going to be one of those exceptions, IMO.

Wins are important this year, touchdowns are important, not Edward's total yardage.

Well he hasnt thrown many TD's yet or got us many wins either...so NO 300 yard games, few TD's, more turnovers than TD's in fact, and not enough wins...

You guys arent making a very good case for him...lmao...

  6. The overall question is are we drafting CB's in precaution to possible injury or soon to be Free Agents.

If healthy, I think we are set with McGee, McKelvin, Youbooty, and Corner. But, as stated, two of those guys were hurt last year. Plus, McGee is possibly not going to be with the team next year. For that, if these guys have a possibility to step up and play well, then great. But if those guys don't get hurt, which is hard to ever bank on, what are these rookies going to do?

My issue with drafting CB's is that we drafted not 1, but 2 when there were other needs out there for us. I don't expect to find a starting DT or OT in the 6th or 7th, but there was value to be had for quality depth.

Overall, I think i'm upset because this makes me believe that we have no intention of resigning McGee which will just be another player we groom only to let walk and is another sign of our team's financial failings.

I actually think the Bills will resign McGee. They have already said that resigning him is a priority. It wont be like Clements because of his age. He isnt going to become the highest paid defensive player in history like Clements got (which has since been eclipsed by more recent free agents). McGee wants to stay and the Bills have said he is a top priority. So we will see, but I think McGee stays, and I am pretty sure thats why they didnt offer more to keep Greer.

  7. Maybe he was inconsistent because it was his first full year under center. Other than the Cleveland and NE game, Trent played decent all year. He couldn't help the injury, or the horrible play calling--(which lost us many games). Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco are so rare, and everyone thinks every QB should be good like them right away. That's not how it works. Look at any great QB, and 99% of the time, he had flashes of greatness, but didn't become consistent with it for 2, 3, or 4 years. The only reason Flacco was good was because of his supporting cast. Matt Ryan had a good supporting cast, and good coaching.

Just saying, the Trent bashing is getting old. He's a good QB who has a tremendous future ahead. Enough with the hating.

Please tell me you are kidding...he had a 4 game stretch of 3TD's and 10 turnovers...more games with a rating under 80 than over 80, only 1 game with more than 1 TD pass, and had 15 turnovers and only 11 TD's.

So, how can you say he was decent in all other games other than NE and Cle? He didnt have a QB rating over 80 in any divisional game either and had more bad games than good...look at the stats. He had terrible games in all 4 divisional games alone.

  8. As I look at our offensive weapons, it's hard to not get excited about the explosive possibilities. With TO and Evans on both sides of the field, Reed/Johnson/Parrish should see great open zones. With Nelson, Derek Fine becomes immediately better just by now having the worst coverman on the other team put on him.

I admit that I am concerned about out OT situation. But I also agree that, with such a solid interior, the Tackle position becomes less important. Jason Peters was usually left out on an island by himself. This won't be the case with our new O-line. I also believe that our power run game will be much improved which will only open up the passing game more.

From that, I have two concerns. Our Offensive Scheme and Trent Edwards.

For the Offensive Scheme, there really isn't much we can do about that. Especially if DJ trys to play the game close to the vest and hope for a 4th quarter win. That basically screws us.

However, I also have to wonder how much different we all would feel with a Cutler, Favre, Manning's, McNabb. I know that I am listing Pro Bowler's here, but there are all guys who consistently find their way to 300 yard games. I think it's something that some QB's "have" and other don't. I don't have the stats in front of me, but I don't think Trent has even broken this barrier. Between that, and his health issues, my question is, how sold on him are you to lead this offense to it's potential?

Well consdering he has only 1, yes just 1, 300 yard game since High School, I am going to say he hasnt shown he can be one. Doesnt mean he can't, but only throwing for 1 300 yard game in all of his college days and 0 in the NFL is not a promising outlook to your question.

  9. It is about history and philosophy. This board was screaming for Ngata. I personally was not, preferring Joseph, Mangold and Trueblood and posting it. The idea of reconstructing a 5-11 team starting with the secondary is idiotic. It will never work.

Now, before this is construed as me stating just how much I know about personnel, be advised that I thought Rob Johnson would be a great qb. I also thought that Pat Williams might very well have been washed up when we didn't re-sign him. It is fun to make predictions and talk about the views of others wrt the Bills. That's why we are here, but again, you don't rebuild a non-talented football team starting with the secondary. It isn't possible.

A team starting from scratch needs a quarterback. Then, they need people who can block, tackle, rush the opposing quarterback, and stop the other team from running the football. In 06, the Bills were going with an inexperienced JP Losman who was playing behind garbage. Truthfully, I never thought he was any good, but what did Levy/Jauron do for him? They concentrated on the secondary, turned down multiple trade down offers (according to Marv on Sirius), and even traded away a day 1 pick.

At least in this draft, they brought in Levitre and Wood. These guys should make an immediate impact on the Bills ability to run. This will help Trent, and even the defense by keeping them off the field.

That is a healthy start to building a football team.

Hahahaha, count me in with the group that thought Rob Johnson was going to pan out and that Pat Williams was on the downside of his career. I didnt think he was washed up, but didnt think he had a lot left...I was very wrong.

  10. I dont get all these people proclaiming that the DB picks were a waste because we are loaded...

How are we loaded? We have just one proven CB in McGee and a young Leodis with few starts under his belt who is still unproven as a full time starter. Behind them, we have Florence who has been torched consistently when lined up as a CB, so if has to step in for McGee or Leodis we would be in trouble. Behind him, we have Corner and Youboty, both are promising but still unproven.

3 of the 5 have seemed to be injured frequently...

Our safeties have been grossly unproductive with everyone outside of Whitner suited more as a backup role than a really good starter.

So, we draft a FS who was the second highest rated S prospect by most grades, and a CB in the 6th round that was a 3rd round grade.

Why is this a problem for so many people? We got torched by teams like AZ and NE when Brady was there (and he is back this year in case you forgot), and that was when we had Greer who would still likely be the 2nd starter on this team this year if he was still here. Let me ask you this...what happened the last 2 games against Brady and Moss? We were not even competitive...

So, our defensive backfield has potential, but lots of question marks still, so its no wonder we took a guy in the 6th who was probably the highest graded player still on their board. Then the guy Lankster was drafted as a ST player, and was probably April's pick as he was a standout ST guy in college and Pitt was high on his trail too...

I think Cary in the 6th was a great pick, and apparently this Lankster kid has lots of potential and may surprise a lot of us...overall, a great draft for us on paper.

The funny thing is, we grabbed an OT in FA right after the draft that people wanted, but if we took him in the 7th we would have lost Lankster in 7th to Pittsburgh...so we made the right choice.

  11. I'm optimistic about our teams future

Its been awhile since I felt like the Buffalo Bills finally have enough talent to match up with some of the big dogs in the league like the Pats or the Giants and get the job done, but In my opinion times are changing, all we have to do is look and its all right there in front of us.

We have a good QB ( I say great , but I'll keep it real ) we have a very good group of running backs, we have a very good group of WR's, we have a good group of TE's now, and the O-line despite losing Jason Peters may end up being a decent line when all is said and done. The FO and coaching staff while maybe not the flashest and most experienced in the league has done a decent job with a very young team and ownership has stood firm in the belief that we are headed in the right direction.

Our defense will probably end up having one of the best backfields in the league, and the rest of the D with the addition of Maybin and Shoebels return, WOW, I feel sorry for opposing QB's (NOT)

and our Special Teams, well , that ones easy, the best in the National Football league.

So when you look at the whole picture, Buffalo really does have a pretty good football team,

    Time will tell...

We will only go as far this next year as Trent Edwards development will allow...if he steps up, we will be a playoff team and a dangerous one. If he plays like last year, we will be picking in the top 15 next year...I am optimistic about his advancement with all the weapons we brought in, but the other potential issue is how long will it take the line to gel and can TE stay healthy long enough if it takes 4 or 5 games.

  12. Sure....we also needed a Center (Nick Mangold), a Guard (Davin Joseph), a Right Tackle (Jeremy Trueblood), a DT (Ngata), etc.

Instead, we used the first 5 PICKS, including the #8 overall on a decent safety, a bad DT, a shaky, fragile cb, and a safety who all but sucks. 5 picks on 4 players, 3 of them defensive backs. Oh.....and 2 of them were arrested.

If you choose to justify this mess with "need," go right ahead. If you think that the 06 draft was good, you should make your case for that as well. What I am missing is the part where posters on this board are mandated to agree with you, or anyone else who chooses to praise this disaster.

Its easy to criticize now, but at the time both Youboty and Ko were considered great values where we drafted them, and were positions of need too. In fact, they were probably amongst the highest graded players left on their draft board at the time they drafted them.

So, its easy to say "they play in the defensive backfield" and they havent done much...well, you can say that about every team who have players they took that havent worked out. Truth is, Youboty actually looks promising, in fact, all of you are screaming about us taking a DB in this years draft because we HAVE Yobouty, so maybe that pick wasnt so bad after all...yet, you are using him as another source of your complaint.

So how can people be mad we drafted him because he was a DB, and yet at the same time say we shouldnt have drafted one this year because we have him? If people are so enamored with him, they should be saying that it was a good pick when we took him...truth is about him is that he has shown promise, but injury issues and lack of in game time have put question marks on him, so why not take someone who was graded a 3rd rounder in the 6th round as some insurance...

And lets all be honest...we have only ONE DB on this team that has proven anything...seriously...just McGee...Leodis has lots of promise, but hasnt had to start a whole season, so the jury is still out. Behind him, we have Florence who got torched all year at CB, so if Leodis or McGee go down we are screwed. Youboty is hurt all the time, and Corner has promise but is still grossly unproven.

So considering we play the Patriots twice a year who have like 50 recievers, dont you think is smart to take such a highly graded DB in the 6th round who has a FAR better chance to make our squad than most of the people remaining in the draft and was probably the highest graded player on our draft board?

  13. I'm not in the slightest bit ashamed of my support of Dick Jauron.

The reasons I support Dick (couldn't help the dick joke) were once again confirmed tonight.

Just one more person who's worked with Jauron and who has nothing but praises for him. My source is an informed guy. He considers Dick a friend from Dick's time here in Chicago. He knows him professionally. He's seen Jauron in the locker room. He referred to him as the one of the most "under rated coaches in the league."

I feel bad blowing up my source in light of recent events, if you're truly curious about his identity, you're welcomed to PM me and I'll give you all the details about my source, so long as he stays private.

I won't respond to your PM if I've never heard of you.

Its not shocking to me...I still have several friends in various NFL circles, and he is very respected in the league. In fact, many felt his 2007 coaching job after Kevin, the bad break in Den and Dall and the worst case of injuries in the league that year, was one of the better coaching jobs in the league. Some have even said that if we made the playoffs (as we had a chance to) he may have won coach of the year...Then last year he was again being spoken of in the coach of the year rumblings after the 6-2 start until it derailed. Again, most lay this on JP and Edwards struggles and the injuries more than DJ from the people I talk to.

Its the fans that are down on him the most. A friend of mine played one year for him in Chicago and he said that he gets more out of his guys than most beacuse people play hard for him.

His biggest problem in Buffalo has been lack of an established QB to lead this team and injuries, and hopefully with all the new weapons and OL additions, Edwards can make the leap forward this year and be that guy. All coaches make in game mistakes, but when the team isnt winning they get magnified. Mike Tomlin probably made more coaching mistakes than most other coaches this year, but it doesnt get talked about because they overcame them and won.

  14. That's why I said DB's throughout My Post genius...DB = Safeties + Cornerbacks...Let Me know if this is getting too tough for you to follow and I'll slow down a bit...

    Now go back to sleep...

And btw...You have taken over as My "least favorite Poster" on this Board...And it's not even a close contest...You are so ultra-obsessed about what others write, and the opinion of others, it's a complete and total joke...You care more about what others think than you do about what the Bills are actually doing...Welcome to ignore...

I know you said DB's the whole post moron, thats why I addressed it because you are a complete fool to lump them all into one category and whine about it. YOU lumped them all into ONE category, even guys who wont be playing in the defensive backfield like N. Harris. Youre complaing is about us taking DB's, well we needed a Safety when we took Whitner and really needed a S when we took Byrd, who was the second rated FS prospect on most peoples boards...yet you complain about it because you consider it the same type of position as a CB by lumping them all into one category. I say again, its like calling all TE and WR just Wideouts...its absurd.

CB and S are comepletely different positions, and positions OF NEED on this team when we drafted Whitner and Byrd...but you just like to whine and manipulate the info to make it look worse than it is by lumping in players like Whitner, Byrd, N. Harris, and such as just DB's so you can complain about DJ...so lame and clear indicator of your limited knowledge of football...

I could care less if you dont like my posts, really...was I suppsed to be sad about that? What shall I ever do now? I mean seriously, who the hell wants to keep reading your cry baby, the sky is falling, doom and gloom crap anyway...On the eve of a great weekend for Buffalo with a tremedous draft you are still complaining...lame...and I get on posts like yours because is so tiring to sit here every time something good happens for this team people like you just find new ways to B word about it and find doom and gloom in it...if its so miserable, root for someone else, because its time the fans GOT BEHIND THIS TEAM as they have made some really good moves and seem to be headed in a very POSITIVE direction...

Go get the sand out of your vagina already or move on...

  15. ...in addition one individual is only the product of his peer group. We have an exceptional group of people here at The Stadium Wall, none more exceptional than Alphadawg. He is my muse, my rival and my brother. The Maris to my Mantle, the Ali to my Frasier. No one can achieve great things in life without the competition and rivalry necessary to bring out one's best...Finally in closing...

    :thumbsup::P

  16. Exactly...But it's actually worse than that...

There are 4 Starters at DB on every NFL Team which is exactly 18.18% of Starters...

Since Ol' Dead Dick has come to town The Buffalo Bills have Picked 34 times in 4 Years...With those 34 Picks they have drafted 10 DB's...That's almost 30% of their Draft Picks at DB...They have Drafted a DB in the 1st Round two out of those four Drafts...In Rounds 1-4 The Bills have Drafted 6 DB's over the last 4 Drafts...Keep that in mind when you remember they had a street Free Agent Starting at SS in 08...

And so on, and so on...

Now if this was a Team that was constantly getting beat by the Pass because their DB's can't cover it would be one thing...But this is a Team on Defense that has continuously been beat in the trenches, not in the Secondary (with the possible exception of 2007 when Injuries in the Defensive Backfield were just crazy)...The Bills get almost no pressure on opposing QB and while it's nice that they took Maybin, why not take a chance on one more guy who has Pass Rush capablities at the expense of a DB on Day 2? Just for the heck of it...

More than anything the need to Draft 3 more DB's in 09 proves beyond a shadow of a doubt The Bills have done a piss poor job of Drafting DB's in the previous 3 years...It's a lot of wasted Picks...And if you think these late Round Picks can't pan out well along the interior lines check out the Bills Depth Chart at O-Line in 09...Especially on the Right Side where they are expecting a 5th Round Pick to Start at RG and a 7th Round Pick to Start at RT...One of their Starting DT's is a 5th Round Pick...A Starting LB is a 6th round Pick...It is possible...When you're not obsessed with Drafting DB's that is...

Let me explain what is really flawed in your post...SAFETIES AND CORNER BACKS ARE IN NO WAY THE SAME POSITION AND ANYONE WHO HAS EVER PLAYED A DOWN OF FOOTBALL KNOWS THIS.

Why dont you lump TE in with WR too...geezus

They are completely DIFFERENT positions...and we ONLY drafted ONE, count that again, ONE CB...Byrd is a S, N. Harris is a LB, Carey is a STEAL in 6th for CB depth and maybe safety depth, and Lankster is ST...thats one CB...not 4

So, go redo your math taking out Whitner who is a Safety and the 3 guys drafted today who were NOT drafted to be a CB.

  17. I think he has some potential but he is not penciled in as a starter. The more i see of him I like but I wouldnt call that addressing Ellison.

Granted he is no lock, but thats what he was drafted for, to play LB...so I wasnt saying he will be the guy for sure (although I do think he will at some point), just meant they felt he was the best LB prospect available when they took him, and I agree...

  18. I gave it an A+ because how often does one team get one of the top 2 prospects in a draft at 5 different positions?

    Maybin - top pass rusher

    Wood - top 1 or 2 C/G

    Levitre - top G

Byrd - one of the top safety prospects

Nelson - graded as maybe the second best TE by many

I also think N. Harris is going to be a nice prospect at LB

Carey has a chance to add good depth to both CB and S

Lankster I think could be a difference maker on ST...and from what I keep reading on him might shock some people...

So, we got 5 top prospects at 5 positions and some very promising guys in 5th, 6th and 7th when most teams draft guys here that never make the squad...

Thats a helluva draft...FO came up big this year...they have actually had a couple of solid drafts, but this to me was a homerun...

  19. You forgot an RB but said WR twice.

I also thought we REALLY needed a serious OT, DT and LB. But we probably had too many holes to fill in one year.

The new projected starters are Hangartner (upgrade), Owens (upgrade), Nelson (probable upgrade), Wood (upgrade) and Levitre (downgrade, since he is actually replacing Peters). Maybin will be half a starter but that is an upgrade. Byrd could be a new starter, too.

Leodis was already starting for Greer and i think will be better this year on the way to being a star.

Getting back Schobel will likely help, and maybe help a lot. It's almost like getting a new starter.

Also, Reed and Parrish at #2 and #3 are very mediocre at best. But Reed and Parrish at #3 and #4 opposite TO and Evans could be very valuable (especially with Hardy and Johnson in the mix at #3 and #4)

We didn't address the starter needed at DT for Williams or LB for Ellison (or FB but that doesn't count).

We got tougher and nastier, which is good. We also got a little better attitude overall.

A trade for an OT or DT would make this a very good off season. Right now it's pretty damn good overall, especially because of TO. If the new revamped OL meshes earlier than it should, that will be a huge help.

We did address Ellison...thats what we drafted N. Harris for...

  20. Thank you Beast. It's humbling to be standing here accepting this accolade. Of course none of this would be possible without the help and guidance of my personal savior the Lord Jesus Christ. God is Great! Also of course my parents Bill and Kay...Isaac Newton once said "if I have seen farther it is because I have stood on the shoulders of giants..." Also my sister Peg and my brother Richard who were always good examples of how to comport myself in the eyes of others. I'd also like to thank my peers without whose support and criticisms I would not have been able to reach this apex in my life. I would also be remiss not to mention the Williamsville School System, The State University College at Buffalo, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, and all the wonderful academic and professional affiliations with which I've had the privilege of enjoying. Of course in accepting this high honor, it would be a great ommision to not mention the wonderful commercial ventures that have been kind enough to employ and train me throughout life's journey...Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips, Sorrentino's Pizzeria, Mighty Taco, Angelina's Restaurant...

And dont forget how important all my input was into your success...hahaha...
