If they let anyone get Sunday Ticket, without being chained to DirecTV, no one would bother to subscribe to DirecTV.

A couple of weeks ago I was kicking around the idea that Apple might be in a position to buy Sunday Ticket to add to its Apple TV streaming service. Apple is sitting on a mountain of cash. The company, however, tends to buy smaller companies as part of a search for talent and intellectual property. I've also seen a report that suggests Comcast might be in a good position to bid for Sunday Ticket. It could bolster its Peacock streaming service as well as its cable TV business. Another thought is that the NFL might divvy up broadcast rights to Sunday Ticket among several streaming and cable companies to keep anti-trust lawyers at bay. In any event, 2022 looks like it's going to be a busy year for the NFL and the broadcast industry: DirecTV’s exclusive deal to carry the NFL Sunday Ticket expires after the 2022 season; The league’s current TV contracts with networks such as ESPN, Fox and CBS are also scheduled to end after the 2022 season. So things could get interesting, but not soon enough for me.

I'm going to watch the Bills on Saturday afternoon. After that, the rest of the weekend will be free to do what I want.

Gregg Williams is out as the defensive coordinator of the New York Jets. The Jets fired Williams on Monday just one day after allowing a game-ending Hail Mary to the Las Vegas Raiders that dropped the Jets to 0-12 on the season. Williams faced heavy criticism after the game because the Jets blitzed on the final play, leaving speedy rookie receiver Henry Ruggs III in 1-on-1 coverage with no safety help. It led many wondering if the Jets really were trying to intentionally lose the game so they do not jeopardize their chances of losing the No. 1 pick and possibly quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Of course, it was hard to fathom that Williams would have been retained at the end of the season anyway, so there is not a whole lot of support to the theory the Jets were intentionally trying to lose on the final play of the game. As a subscriber who thinks the Athletic is more sizzle than steak, here's my two cents: It appears the VC investors are putting a serious squeeze on the management of the Athletic. Venture capitalists invest in start-up or early stage companies that are perceived to have high growth potential. They take a substantial stake in the company for their investment. Their goal is to turn that investment into a s**tload of money. They often expect to see 25 percent annual returns for the first years of the company's life. That way, they expect to make a killing when the company sells its shares on the stock market, so that they can sell their stake and move on. For the record, VC investing is high-risk, and many of the companies don't pan out. So the winning investments have to be home runs to make up for the losers. The NFL, NBA, NHL and baseball seasons all in limbo because of the current health crisis. That's not a good scenario for a publication built on sports reporting. This situation has put the kibosh on growth at the Athletic and the VC investors are are getting nervous and demanding profits, which they need in order to sell the product to other investors. If you can't grow revenue, you cut costs. If that doesn't work, you pull the plug. And VC investors will do that without a second thought, or a second of remorse.

Haven't been to a Bills game, home or away, since I left WNY in 1983. Before then, I went to a half-dozen or so games in Orchard Park.

Do you actually believe that someone who has done research on the topic (and presuming they actually found something) would turn around and tell the world, thereby diluting any gains they might make?
