Tebow looks like a NFL QB tonight
MaineMoxie replied to Chuckknox's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
And Brian Billick just made an interesting comment about the fact that his throws - meaning the "wind-up" and release - take too long for the NFL. -
Edwards will start next year

What happened to Loserman? -
Dude, what about the two AFL championships? If you're gonna count all 50 years, then the mid 1960s have to rank up there. If you don't think those AFL years count then don't say six out of fifty.

Edwards will start next year
MaineMoxie replied to nick in* england's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This is all pure speculation. No one knows who's gonna start next year since we don't even have a non-interim head coach yet (and by Monday or Tuesday we probably won't have a head coach, period). If Fewell weren't so freakin' in love with Fitz (and misguidedly thinking an ugly win on Sunday could save his job) we might see some more of Brohm who wasn't great, but wasn't horrible either (honestly, it's hard to judge when the offense is hardly ever on the field). -

PTR: Thanks for the info. I really like Cowher. Yeah, Lebeau deserves a lot of credit, but Cowher coached in Pitt for a very long time and was pretty successful. He's a good football guy. I wouldn't be surprised if he wanted control of scouting and related things, though (which would be cool with me - bye, bye Modrak and Guy). As for Mary Wilson being several years younger than my mother and married to a guy in his nineties, I say go Ralphie! -

Something about some guy named Cowher? Whatever. The Sabres won! 4-3 in regulation after being down 3-0. Seriously, though, I read on WGR's website that Cowher said he wasn't interested (though this could simply be based on his comment from earlier in the season). -

Ah, so the inheritance tax only kicks in for kids and other relatives. Maybe I knew that. Still, how much younger is she? It'd be nice to get a considerably younger and stable owner (who wasn't a penny-pincher). -

Mary's a lot younger than him, if I recall. But wouldn't she get killed with capital gains taxes? Isn't that why the Brown family temporarily sold the Bengals and then repurchased them? -

Correction. The Sabres just took the lead on the PP. So what's this about the Bills? Some big announcement? -

I'd watch, but I'm listening to the Sabres game online (they tied it up! ). -
Cool! I'd love to see him get a few snaps at The Ralph.

Considering the general mediocrity at the QB position in the NFL, why hasn't anyone given Drew Willy a shot since the Ravens let him go? Part of me wonders if he wouldn't be better than the Chroisen One (yes, a heresy, I know). The NFL seems to like to recycle people even if they prove to be less than competent (can you say Dick Jauron?).
-
That's if he even gets a shot. Fewell seems married to Fitz even if Fitz is hurting. While I agree that throwing a guy as new to the system as Brohm in there at QB could be disastrous, would it really be any worse than what we've seen from Fitz and Edwards?

its not as bad as you may think
MaineMoxie replied to buffalo_bills's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I there's some truth to this, though it may be an unpleasant truth. The NFL is a watered-down version of what it was in the '90s so there are a LOT of players in the league who wouldn't have been able to make the '90s version of the Bills. Today's NFL is a sea of mediocrity. Having 32 teams has diluted the talent pool, both in terms of players as well as coaches and FO people. As for the Bills, they have managed to win 5 games (though I'm not entirely sure how). To fix this team they should switch to a 3-4 defense. Put Stroud at NT with Williams and Schobel (if he doesn't retire) on the ends. Then get some good run-stuffing LBs. Keep Poz in there to call the defensive plays. Don't play ten yards off defenders on 3rd and less than 10. As for the offense, I'd keep Levitre and Wood (maybe Hangartner?) and blow up the rest. Bell hasn't proven anything as far as I'm concerned. Obviously we need a new QB. But, with a good OL and the right coaching, you can win with mediocre QBs (e.g. Brad Johnson, Doug Williams, etc. all won Super Bowls). On the other hand, with a top-flight, mobile QB and a weak OL you can also do reasonably well (e.g. the Packers). It may not be possible to fix both at once so the smart thing would be to fix one or the other. I think the easier thing to do would be to fix the OL since the NFL is a little thin at QB. I wouldn't touch the RBs or WRs. A lot of teams have two good RBs these days so we should keep them both. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing TO stick around for another year just to see what he could do with a real QB. -
Personal preference I guess. I much prefer the "standing buffalo" throwbacks with the blue home jerseys. I like the Super Bowl era unis too. I'm not a big fan of the old white helmets with the charging buffalo on them (i.e. the one that's the subject of this thread).

Find a carekeeper QB for the next three seasons
MaineMoxie replied to Pine Barrens Mafia's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I have no idea if you're serious or not, but as a CHS alum I can't say I'd complain to see him under center for the Bills (or any other team, for that matter). Of course, when I was at CHS the football team was terrible. Figures. -
Bucknell U. uses (or used to use) this logo too. But I am sure that they pay licensing fees to the Bills. It's a trademarked logo.

Seriously? I hope to God that's not actually true. A freakin' piece of the team and he turned it down? Man, Buffalo gets a bad rap. Nobody wants to come to town. "It's too cold and snowy. There's nothing to do. Blah, blah, blah." Have these nuts been to Green Bay (I mean aside from Lambeau)? Not sayin' any of them actually said this, but I've heard it enough over the years to get sick of it. In the nine years I've lived on the southern coast of Maine (only a little over an hour north of Boston), we've gotten more snow than Buffalo every single year and it's consistently colder. Sorry. I'm tired. I'm going to bed. Maybe I'll wake up and the last decade of Bills mediocrity will have been a dream...

Are injuries a result of poor play?
MaineMoxie replied to SpecialK15's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Really? We've got 16 players on IR this season and had 17 on IR in 2007. Something just doesn't seem right about that. Maybe the Bills have suffered fewer overall injuries, but how many season-ending injuries have been suffered by other teams? We have six offensive linemen on IR this year. That's got to be approaching some kind of record. -
On the one hand, I'm happy for him, but on the other - as a UB alum - I'm disappointed he didn't choose to stay and try to build a great program that might have a shot at moving into a BCS conference in five or ten years. There's not much loyalty in college football anymore, on either side. It's disheartening.

Penalties are way down since Fewell took over.
MaineMoxie replied to PromoTheRobot's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Look, Fewell may not be the second (or third) coming of Lou Saban, and, yes, they're 1-2 under his guidance, but fewer penalties is an improvement any way you cut it. It's not all dumb luck. It also seems as if they had fewer people limping off from injuries, which could be a coincidence (I didn't take the time to look up the statistics), but either way, it shows how bad Jauron truly was. -
Scheftner on LA Football, NO BILLS!!
MaineMoxie replied to 83 Lee for HOF 83's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It's not just the NFL. It seems that local support and the number of actual fans in the stands really doesn't matter in pro sports anymore (neither does 'winning it all' it seems - see my comment about Jerry Jones). Just look at the debacle in Phoenix surrounding the Coyotes (not that I want them to move to Hamilton, mind you). And MLB had to politely get on the Yankees' case because they were charging so much for tickets behind the plate (over $2k per seat per game) that the stands looked empty on TV. I've said this before, but I'll say it again: Jerry Jones managed to build a $1 billion stadium, charge outrageous prices for food at said stadium, and yet his team hasn't won a playoff game since 1996. These days it's all about marketing. How many t-shirts, jerseys, trinkets, etc. can you sell. There may not be much local support for the Jags, but if the NFL markets it right it doesn't matter. There *is* pretty good local support for the Vikings (though no new stadium) and the Chargers are an AFC original with a lot of tradition. But if it makes more marketing sense to the NFL to move the Chargers or Vikings over the Jags, they will. -
Why haven't Modrak and Guy been canned

Ah, the good old days. Wade Phillips was an idiot for ever doubting Doug Flutie's abilities. Flutie got screwed way too many times in his career.
