  1. There are numerous theorists in many sports who believe that the "improvements" in protective equipment is at the root of the increasing violence and injury rate. I believe that there is probably a lot of truth to this. I've always been in favor of rule changes that make the game safer for the players. I've never complained about one single recent rule change and players who do complain are morons. However I've argued in the past that reducing the degree of protection (ie- taking helmets and visors away from hockey players, going back to leather helmets in football) is something that simply cannot be done. While ultimately you might get from Point A (too many injuries) to Point B (fewer injuries) the carnage that would occur during the time period between those two points would be too costly. I doubt that players would be able to learn new techniques and methods quickly enough and at any rate, the league's lawyers would never allow it. So IMO those people advocating for lesser or less protective equipment are not entertaining a realistic scenario.
  2. Whether or not there's any basis for the SI prediction, many here have been firm in the conviction that Gailey will be fired. Amazingly there are numerous very good posters here who don't seem to think he will be. For weeks I've considered his firing to be a foregone conclusion.
  3. You mean like Les Steckel and Frank Gansz? No. What the Bills need is a competent coach, regardless of style. edit: or Rod Marinelli who is a more recent example of a failed "fire and emotion" coach.
  4. Yes, but it can prevent some concussions in some instances, depending on the individual, the force of the hit, etc. No one's saying it's a panacea or a magic bullet. If the new helmet can reduce the incidence of concussion compared to existing helmets, then the technology is progressing. That's all we can ask for.
  5. The point I (and I think EA) are trying to make is that the helmet is designed to reduce (to stay consistent with the terms you used) the external radial force. Thus in some cases, it will reduce the rotational acceleration of the brain which is caused by the external radial force. That's what the helmet is designed to do. The one thing no helmet can do (unless it was encased in 6" of Swedish memory foam) is to reduce the sudden acceleration and sudden deceleration of a direct hit. Cause and effect.
  6. Didn't someone use a still shot of the kid who said that on a YouTube video? John Cocktosten maybe? Then you admit you ride horses! So you're a merchant mariner or a longshoreman? You mean you're less of the person that you used… never mind.
  7. What's the magic word? Your dog is Dirk Nowitzki? An octopus? Have you ever met Ken Jones? Good man Buftex. RIP Esmie.
  8. IMO your belief that acquiring Tebow would pre-empt the Jaguars need to draft a quarterback in the first round is wrong. I also believe that the fact they burned a high number one pick on Blaine Gabbert will have no bearing on their decision. Finally I don't believe that the unexpectedly decent performance by Chad Henne will have any bearing on their decision either. I believe the Jags will draft a quarterback with their first pick.
  9. Did you find out what the cause was? When I say replace the floor, I mean using a different subflooring like a cementitious product like HardieBacker instead of a wood product. Also you said the tenant woke you up so I assumed you didn't have any detectors near the boiler. Glad you're alright.
  10. For some reason this topic reminds me of back in the mid-90s when Kay Stephenson was our head coach and Kay Dalton was our quarterbacks coach. What were we talking about?
  11. I guess you were right. It devolved into the ugly mess we typically end up with.
  12. I guess this situation intrigues me so pardon all the questions. Did they determine a cause and also, will you be changing the floor underneath the boiler? Keep in mind those 1300 watt space heaters draw about 11 amps so they can overload a circuit and start a fire too. Please be careful Jim. Also, get some smoke detectors and CO2 sensors for your house. They save lives. You got lucky this time.
  13. I wish I believed that Jacksonville and KC will not draft quarterbacks. But I don't. This makes me uncomfortable. Not that there's anything wrong with that. :nana:
  14. I'm a huge believer in the idea that many problems are of the type that can be solved with more than one solution. However I was only discussing the issue of helmet design. But you make a good point.
  15. I'm not an "end justifies the means" kind of guy. I used to respect Brown as an underappreciated very good player on a bad team. My view on him has changed for the worse.
  16. Landry is widely considered a liability in coverage. He's a better run player than Byrd (who is not bad in run support and has been among the league leaders in forced fumbles for safeties). Byrd is a much better pass defender than Landry. Adrian Wilson lost his starting job this year. Not sure about your football knowledge at safety.
  17. I'm plenty old enough to remember the '98 draft. I don't remember any flack for Polian taking Manning. I do remember that there was quite a bit of debate as to which player would become a better pro.
  18. Again. If you have a problem, approach Mitchell. That's exactly what Mitchell said. What Brown did was irresponsible and cowardly.
  19. If you have a problem with the starting QB, go talk to the head coach. Tell him "The team doesn't believe in this guy. The team is having a hard time playing well for him. The team doesn't have faith in this guy. Me and the offensive line (and the offense, whoever) believe that Kreig deserves the chance to play." You don't take matters into your own hands like that.
  20. That's right. There's this naive assumption that you can just let people walk and take their money and invest it into different players and get the same or better value. Byrd and Levitre are close enough to the best at their position that you are not likely to re-allocate that money and get the same value. More likely the team will get worse if they spend that money elsewhere.
  21. The negative publicity for Brown has been pretty significant. I wonder how it might affect Brown's career in broadcasting. There's no question that he's regretting his decision to talk about this. And you're right. His best defense now is either stupidity or brain damage, neither of which will boost his career or deflect criticism.
  22. So you made a Freudian slip saying kiss instead of kick. That really doesn't help your explanation at all. I guess you guys were drinking at the Park Meadow? Anways, Scott Mitchell responds: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/12/26/scott-mitchell-calls-lomas-brown-reprehensible/ Mitchell said: “It was extremely disappointing. I’m really shocked by it, to be honest. Here’s a guy I’ve had in my house, I had a big dinner for the offensive linemen every year, he came to my house and ate dinner, I gave my offensive linemen gifts every year. For him to do that is just reprehensible, beyond words. It’s really disappointing, it really is painful. When you mess with my family, mess with my livelihood, mess with my health, it’s unacceptable. It’s B.S. I just wouldn’t do it to a teammate. I wouldn’t do it. If Lomas has a problem with me, come talk to me. To try to get someone hurt, it’s just mind-boggling.”
