  1. This is the only valid reason I could see for the Jets to NOT select a QB because I think it's obvious they need one. As far as new coaching staffs getting saddled with highly drafted QBs not of their choice, besides Weeden, Blaine Gabbert is an example twice over. Back to the Jets, their situation is so bizarre it's really hard to say what will happen. The retention of Rex in spite of a new GM muddles things quite a bit. FWIW, Marty Mornhinweg and David Lee take over for Tony Sparano and Matt Cavanaugh. Mornhinweg coached under Steve Mariucci and spent his professional development with the Packers, Niners, and later working for Andy Reid. Without a doubt they'll be running a West Coast Offense. This would seem to make guys like Nassib and Barkley more likely fits for the Jets. On the other hand, none of us quite know what the Bills offense will look like. Marrone's experience with the Saints mixed with Hackett's experience with the West Coast Offense and the K-Gun make the identity of the Bills offense a bit of a mystery.
  2. True. It would be hard to overstate the effect of one of the elite space eaters. Of course at any one time there are only 3-4 of them in the league which also underscores the idea that they're a nice luxury to have but not necessary for defensive success.
  3. Hey, I and others owned this. And if the alternative was retaining Edwards, then we weren't really wrong lobbying for improvement via a coaching change. The fact Wanny's D was even worse than Edwards' doesn't make wanting to replace Edwards with Wanny wrong. As it turns out neither one was good enough. At least we got the chance to witness this first hand as opposed to wondering about it.
  4. The discussion becomes interesting for me here as you and Kelly point out the odd paradox of a guy who can throw accurate deep balls but who lacks zip on his intermediate throws. I watched every game Barkley played in 2011 and he had numerous on the money throws between 50 and 60 yards replete with good, proper trajectory. If you said that about a QB, it would be treated as a given that that same QB could zip intermediate range passes downfield. That assumption would be wrong. Barkley can throw the ball 55-60 yards downfield on occasion but mysteriously he doesn't have a fastball. In other words he can throw it far enough but he can't throw it hard enough. From a physics standpoint I'm not really sure how this can be explained and yet it's one of the things that jumps off the video when you watch Barkley.
  5. Perhaps I didn't express myself clearly enough. I'm wasn't attempting to rank pass rusher equally with offensive tackle (although I place both of them above guard for instance). My point was they are both high value positions but both have lesser value than quarterback. And btw there are some here who would argue that a great offensive tackle is as valuable as a great pass rusher. But that whole debate is irrelevant to the point I was trying to make.
  6. Ansah is probably a less-dimensional player than Jordan however. edit: regardless of who's "better."
  7. You're no fun. All I want is to be able to kick a guy while he's down a few times and piss on his motionless career.
  8. I'm very vexed by the Jets picking at #9. I think it cramps the Bills free movement a bit. On the other hand, common sense is that the Jets do not have a good QB… so there's that.
  9. Just as with a great pass rusher, a great OT has tremendous value to a football team. But the value at any other position pales in comparison to the value a competent quarterback brings. Then when you measure the contribution of an elite player at any position compared to an elite QB, the chasm widens even more greatly.
  10. You do realize though that this is the defensive analog to drafting Chance Warmack?
  11. ^^^^^^^^^ This is one of the better points I've read on this forum in the past several days. Breaking it down like that does very little for me because it steers the discussion towards the idea that Wanny's sole weakness was that he was outschemed and outsmarted, which is certainly the case. But he also had somewhat of a role in determining which players made the final roster. He also had a large role in motivating the players. So as to the people lessening the blame on Wanny by pointing out personnel weaknesses (lack of talent) or motivational weaknesses (underperformance of players), Wanny had a role in these areas too. Let's just say he pushed all the wrong buttons. I look for the Bills D to be dramatically improved, even if the talent is only marginally improved. edit: And yes, 12 months ago I was optimistic that Wanny would be able to turn this defense around.
  12. Dude, Scott should hire you to dress this place up a bit. Great work.
  13. Mini-bar or a full bar? We're Bills fans. Full bar all the way.
  14. Well the bar hasn't been set too high for Pettine so here's to another round of Kool-Aid!
  15. Have you met Dibs or Dubs? I'd like to introduce the three of you. Shut the !@#$ up!!!
  16. Wanny was DC for only one season. A DC or an OC deserve one season to be judged. If you're saying that Nix should have forced Gailey to fire Wanny midseason, I disagree. Our D was less talented but better under Jauron and Fewell in my recollection. In the last 3 years the Bills have invested very heavily in defense. Not all the players have panned out but I think the talent level on D is higher than it was during the Jauron era. But unless it's all a bad dream, it seems to me that the Bills were setting club and league records for suckitude under Wanny.
  17. Anyways EA, I've said about Barkley on several occasions that his ball placement and accuracy is good, his timing is good, his understanding of the offense is good, everything is good, except his arm strength. Some people think it's a minor point. I'm not one of those people. As I said earlier, I can't think of an NFL QB with such a weak arm having any kind of decent career except for Chad Pennington. Yeah Montana had a weak arm but that was 20 years ago. I could be wrong about Barkley like I've been wrong about many players. We'll see.
  18. Most of these draft guys are very myopic. They can't see past the first round. I understand there are some time constraints but a lot of these guys simply don't do their homework. Their analysis is usually something like "the Bills lost Levitre so they'll draft Warmack" or the Bills need a receiver so they'll draft Patterson." Look at the idiot McShay predicting the Bills will draft a guard for instance. I have yet to read a single thoughtful, intelligent, informed opinion about the Bills draft possibilities from a major media outlet. As is commonly the case, many of the opinion pieces here are better than what you read in the media. Because unlike the vast majority of the media, we live, breathe, eat, drink, and sleep, Bills football.
  19. I wonder how high this year's Honey Badger, Tharold Simon will be drafted.
  20. If I were running the Jets, I'd go QB in the first round. To me it's a bit disconcerting that they pick 9th, right after us. It makes me a bit less crazy about trading down.
