with such a deep draft, the bills picked a bad year to go with just 6 scouts and have their top 2 talent evaluators work part time from home. could be why they have consistently given away picks to grab that "special can't miss" player before they had to rely on their scouting network for teh really crap shoot type of players McCargo, Losman, POZ Denney have really been worth the extra picks it cost to get them

Are we sure Bell can't be a good OLT?
spartacus replied to BobChalmers's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
we paid him alot so he must be good so good, my guess he will be the LT come opening day -
this is not entirely true the defense was gassed in the 4th quarter because they continually failed to make stops and get off the field in the 1st 3 quarters. when your defensive game plan and personnel is designed to let the other team roll up massive yards and time by running the ball - your defense BY DESIGN will be on the field a lot. Instead of actually trying to win and be aggressive, the Bills team was built and managed to "not lose" by alot keep it close and hope for miracles

Are we sure Bell can't be a good OLT?

The clown show at OBD has been picking up trash and trying to pass it off as an NFL caliber OL since Polian left. It would seem the entire philosophy is the designed as an affront to Polian - who was fired over his disagreement with Linda Bogdan that we should be drafting OL with our premium picks. Seems Ralph holds a grudge and demands we do the opposite with building an OL from what Polian would do. -

ah, grasshopper you are incorrect The Bills did pay Walker his bonus in March then cut him a week before the season. with no other legitimate LT on the roster brilliant!! -
you got half the answer with Poz. he was better before he was hurt and is now damaged goods. he will never regain the speed and agility he had before the injury and can't make up for the lack of skill another player drafted while injured who never recovered. Sam Bradford or McClain will be a lock at #9

Gailey denies Whitner is being shopped
spartacus replied to In-A-Gadda-Levitre's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Gailey's comments are speculation as well. the fact is Overdorf will move Whitner out the door as soon as he can to save a few bucks. Better he gets something in trade, but a Langston Walker type stealth cut is not out of the realm of possibility -
My guess is payroll is under $75 mil. The bloated contracts on the defense will be cut loose under the guise of not fitting into the new 3-4. Gailey and his staff of college and CFL coaches was brought in to handle the young cheap talent that will be acquired this off-season. Ralph will pocket the savings

Brady Quinn Traded To Denver
spartacus replied to Canadian Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
the "and company" are the same guys that were here picking Losman and Edwards. not sure why they will do any better this time around -
you are absolutely correct. the $9 mil they spent on Lee Evans was so much better spent money since he got to watch his QB planted into the ground or throw checkdowns as he ran for his life Using a super cheap low round draft pick like Bell or a previously cut turd like Chambers at LT is a much sounder strategy for developing offensive consistency
-
which would still make him the best QB on the Bills roster Lee Evans would actually see the football

Going the Pittsburgh route
spartacus replied to billnutinphoenix's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
you are correct The Bills have been horrible at identifying impact playmakers with their premium picks. and they have done even worse for the amount of money they have spent in free agency. $3 mil / yr for Cornell Green - who only looks good because Bell is his competition. A big part of this problem is because they have short changed the scouting and talent evaluation process. A strategy which employs 6 scouts and allows Modrak and Nix to work part time from home in distant states produces the piss-poor results of the last decade of drafting. and not much has changed from last year regarding the draft. The same scouts are still here and Modrak and Nix are still running the show. Only the Pro personnel guy has changed. can't understand the firm conviction that all holes will be fixed by this front office in any draft or free agent period. -
Going the Pittsburgh route
spartacus replied to billnutinphoenix's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Because we also have the mythical Modrak and his legion of shrinking scouts (now 6) who will find the can't miss prospects in the college ranks (like they have been doing for the last decade). the simpleton answer is that Dick is gone and everyone knows he made all of the bad picks and trades -
This is true - which is why the early decision to scrap the 4-3 and switch to a 3-4 where none of the front 7 need to switch positions is a really stupid decison and makes zero sense if you are trying to improve the product on the field- unless of course it is being used as a smokescreen to gut the team of its bloated contracts on the defensive side of the ball

if there is no CBA, there is no foundation to support the draft because it is a restraint of trade which requires voluntary consent of both parties. If the players are not a party to a CBA, then they will argue that their services can not be restrains by a unilateral draft and they should be free to negoitate with all teams which is why the league will probably not have a lockout in 2011 but will unilaterally implement its own new set of rules and invite the players to participate without the union's consent. The union will be pretty useless without a membership

recycling junk does not make it gold Maybin and Ellis suck at DE which they have played their whole careers. now they will be better after one off-season of playing a new position. blind hope

Nix is passing on quality free agents
spartacus replied to BillsPhan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
looking outside the Bills would have been a waste of time Ralph knew he was not paying any money for coaching and scouting - what bonafide GM would accept those kind of limitations. The Bills have 6 scouts and their top 2 guys work from home, not in the front office. and now they have a junior varsity coaching staff with CFL experience designed to handle the cheap young "talent" they will be able to afford on their austerity budget. -

sure it is mission accomplished from the Bills perspective the fans got a buzz about the Bills pursuit of an overhyped free agent now they can say they tried, just like they tried with the bogus Shanahan and Cowher fabrications. -
still can't believe posters give Modrak a free pass he is the head of college scouting, yet is the one "qualified" guy who did not push for his choices, either because he was never around OBD since he lives in Florida or his talent evaluation skills are severely overrated and based heavily on hindsight.
-
sure is awesome I especially like how he moved fast to make it happen. he should get around to it right after Ralph opens the purse strings, so there will be no improvement for this draft 6 scouts and 2 part time guys working from home sure seems like a top notch NFL run talent evaluation operation

this guy was made to be a Buffalo Bill super hyped coming out of college drafted in top 12 pro career has been a complete bust - completely failed under multiple teams and coaches sounds too good to be true -
he's too small to play SS
-
all college players would be free to negotiate with all 32 teams the draft is a serious restraint of trade and illegal without the anti-trust exemption the league enjoys. without a CBA, that is all at risk
-
without a CBA, there is no foundation to support a draft. expect the union, or its decertified members, to sue to stop the draft claiming restraint of trade
