Russ - go back to the Marlins. This isn't baseball where you can find gems in another team's mionor league system- not to mention you don't have a talent evaluator like Larry Beinfest to find the talent. Peters is a pro bowl talent at the 2nd most important position on the team He is getting screwed because he did not cash in on a big rookie contract when he entered the league. just pay the guy and spend your resources on improving the already existing holes on this team
-
he has no experience with negotiating either. He is a marketing guy so we have a head guy with no real business skills or football skills. he does have a lot of experience spinning the cheapest baseball team, though
-
I wouldn't get too sentimental over Marv. He had ulterior motives in taking the GM job The only reason Marv agreed to act as GM was because he thought he could finesse his way back into coaching which is what he has been trying to do since he got run out of Buffalo.
-
talk is cheap with basically unlimited amount of cap room, not signing the guy is another personnel failure. being active and failing to close is just as effective as not making any offers at all - you still failed to improve your team while your division rivals continue to kick your butt
-
sure it does in Ralph's bizarro world, he felt Dick would get wooed away after finally gettting the Bills to the playoffs. Ralph was convinced he stole Dick at discount rates by extending him before the season was over.
-
you forgot that he has trouble with the play book and can't remember where to run on most plays. Thomas Jones was the most productive RB in the NFL over the 2nd half of 2008. Lynch is a plugger, but has limited skills for being the 12th pick in the draft. You need a true gamebreaker for a very high #1 pick. Jackson is the more dangerous player, but our crackerjack coaches and talent evaluators could not figure out what they had in JAckson (or Jabari Greer or countless others)
-
this is absolute nonsense. on the contrary, anyone taking a job in Buffalo is just about guaranteed a 3 year stay. Dick was kept because Ralph won't eat the new contract. He won't eat it with 3 years left and he won't eat it with 2 years left.

Why has Pittsburgh been so successful because they have been at the forefront of performance enhancing drugs. they pioneered the use of steroids in the 1970's giving their team a huge advantage in winning the first 4 Superbowls. Now they are leading the way in HGH use.
-
actually he hired Russ Grimm - but was coerced by the league to hire a black guy to give some substance to the Rooney Rule. To his credit he found a bona fide coach on the do-over. Interesting that Grimm is also in the Super Bowl

Seeing all these ex-Bills thrive on new teams...

why wouldn't we be? after the brain trust for the Expos bought the Marlins, we got their head of marketing to run our football team -

maybe we should look for a "good" WR instead of the tallest goober we can find. probably get better production that way -
Should the Bills put less emphasis on Special Teams?
spartacus replied to BuffaloBill's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The biggest impact is on how the Bills use their non-premium draft picks. Generally they are spending those picks based on less skilled players will be good special teams players instead of drafting players who have skills that would enable them to actually compete for a starting job. -
Here's why Pioli went to "small market" Kansas City

Buffalo could be a transportation hub - if Buffalo's stellar leadership had a clue. Buffalo sits on one of 2 routes from Toronto to the entire US, but they have been dicking around with how to update the Peace Bridge for 20 years while Windsor/Detroit have exploited the opportunity -
Good News! We are no longer the Arizona Cardinals of the AFC

Lynch is a good plugger- but not exactly a play maker since he does not have the speed and moves to break big plays. Fred jackson is more of a playmaker than Lynch -
seems to be a perfect fit for Dick style, since it is not based on success. Bills do have a cohesive team, just not a very successful one - all driven by Dick's failure to demand anything more.

good correction Bills need to build the front 7 or OL
-
instead of spending premium picks every year on DBs, the Bills should re-sign some of those DBs -like Greer and replace our training staff with those actually trained in sports medicine. The bills rash of injuries over the last few years is rooted in poor conditioning

Comment about the Tampa Bay Cover 2
spartacus replied to In space no one can hear's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This is the core problem with the Bills brain trust. they employ a scheme that is designed to use lower tier CBs in a soft zone scheme whic allows you to spend on other areas. Yet the Bills do the opposite and use multiple premium picks on CBs with good press coverage skills but no zone skills, who they will play 10 yards off the ball. So not only do we waste premium picks on a position which does not require high level talent, teh guys we pick take years of re-training to learn how to play a zone. (see McKelvin wasted 1st year) -
This is what Bill Polian would do

another 5 years - on top of the 10 years we just used to re-build, should just about do it -
The current Peters hate is orchestrated by Brandon as his response to diverting attention from the big Dick fiasco. The Bills have not spent resources on LT since Will Wolford left town more than 15 years ago. Instead of taking advantage of their good luck at finding the cheapest pro bowl LT in the league, they are more concerned with how to maintain the cheapest deal possible. There are 2 reasons why there is a salary issue with Peters. 1. Since the Bills lucked into Peters as an undrafted free agent, they spent no draft picks and paid no big upfront signing bonus if they had used a high draft pick. So his contract is unusually low due to his salary history. 2. Because the bills ignored the OL for 10 years, it had degraded to a useless mess. Thus, Marv spent huge money on 2 marginal talents in Walker and Dockery just to field a functional unit. Peters salary is now a fraction of what is being paid it 2 other OL players who are not as good as he is. Instead of correcting this salary inequity, Brandon conducts a smear campaign instead of coming up with a contract solution which gets his Pro Bowl LT paid in line with league averages and his own teammates on the OL. Just pay the guy.

The Bills did the worst thing they could do in a draft - they put themselves in a box by the personnel moves they made prior to the draft by gutting the team of TD players, like Milloy, they forced themselves to take a S that could start from day 1. thus they were taking Huff or Whitner in round 1 no matter who was available. of course, the overall philophsy of making a S the centerpiece of your defense instead of a stud DT was flawed to begin with, but even with a flawed strategy, their execution of that strategy sucked as well.

yeah can't wait for the Bills playoff game to begin oh wait--

Why is Matt Millen on Football Night in America?
spartacus replied to Steely Dan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
for as bad as Millen was as GM- he does have much more football knowledge than our top guy - a converted baseball marketer. not to mention- even Millen was not dumb enough to start a vendetta against his best player
