What makes me think this defense is too complicated? Perry Fewell himself told us that McKelvin can't grasp it, little things or big things. This coach-speak makes me sick. Going back to Gregg Williams explaining every loss and his few wins being caused by the players' mostly not or sometimes being able to perform his damn schemes. Fewell reminds me of that type of arrogant coach. Everything is always about his schemes and his players "making plays" within them. And by the way, McKelving's smarter fellow d-backs have been doing a terrific job of keeping everything in front of them with a 10 yard cushion lately, don't you agree?? And if the Dolphins, Jets or Pats needed 15 or 20 yards, they kept everything in front of them with 15 or 20 yard cushions too. I bet Leodis could do that well himself.

After reading a rare excellent article from Jerry Sullivan today... http://www.buffalonews.com/sports/columns/story/493112.html ...I have some questions for Perry Fewell: 1) Why does he make his defenses so complicated that the 11th player chosen out of the 2008 draft, Leodis McKelvin, doesn't have a clue where the hell to line up, half through his rookie season? 2) If he must have this complicated defense that only veteran players with high IQ's can grasp, how could the Bills not make a decent effort to sign Ty Law? 3) Why not just let McKelvin follow his instincts, run the same blitzes Youbouty was kicking ass running before he got hurt, and learn on the fly? At least he would gain experience and his speed would absolutely make up for at least some of the mistakes Fewell is so convinced he will make. 4) If he implements such an intelligent system for his pass coverages, why have his smarter and/or more experienced d-backs then McKelvin looked so stupid watching opposing receivers run wild on them during the past 3 game losing streak?

Well I haven't forgotten it. Now if the Bills were 7-2 or even 6-3 right now, I wouldn't be bringing it up. But the similarities going into Monday's game to last year's team have become stark. So now it's up to this year's team to kick the Browns' butts all over the Ralph while making Quinn wish he was back on the bench...to make this a new and better season moving forward.

You think I'm a jerk? I'm crushed, I thought I was being both critical and humorous. Let me ask you a question, did you sit through that 56-10 joke of a game like I did last year on that infamous Sunday night? It was an amazing exhibition of complete anhilalation right in front of us 73,000 excited Bills fans who were expecting a much better effort than that coming off that 4 game winning streak. I have to admit I'm really pissed that my favorite team is right back to that point in the season when a loss to a struggling yet talented team to Cleveland Monday night will give them the same stupid 5-5 record! Excuse me if I'm being a jerk about it, but when they were 5-1, I really never saw this coming.....did you? Aren't you upset about it? Do you really care? Do you have a pulse, or are you really coach Jauron posting out here.
-
Impressive reply wings. If only your heros would not have given it up when they were 5-1...and let their momentum go...until now their season has just about gone away. I'm a die hard Bills fan. Had seasons from 1986 to 1997, never missed a game. Went to road games, even went to a Super Bowl. Your picture of Jimbo represents my favorite all time Buffalo Bill. I'm on your side, I want them to win. Lately, I'm just sick and tired of all their losing.

Let's see. Last season the Bills were 5-4-0 heading into a Sunday Night nationally televised game at home, after having won 4 straight games. This season, the Bills are 5-4-0, heading into a Monday Night nationally televised game at home, after having won 4 straight games earlier in the season. So what was that Dick and most of his players were saying after every loss this year, about despite each of those ugly losses, their record at that time was better then what we fans expected them to be? I hate to break it to Dicky and his excuse-laden team, but I for one expected them to be better then last year's team, not identically the same. But there is good news for this Monday night. The Bills only need to lose to Cleveland 55-10 to improve over last year's Sunday night laugher against New England, while falling to the same record as last year's 5-5-0 mark after 10 games. Go Bills, just come within 45 points and your coach will be proud of the improvement over last season. That's coach Jauron, always living up to his motto: "It's hard to win in the NFL."

68 seconds with Langston Walker.....
VJ91 replied to marauderswr80's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
"Yucky"?? How about pathetic! Langston Walker and Derick Dockery don't have one hearbeat between them. Reminds me of their head coach. And by the way, how many hours does our new young offensive line coach spend teaching these big ugly weak gutless cowards technique and motivation??? How much does that guy get paid? Every defense our "biggest line in the NFL" line up against turns into a combination of the '79 Steelers, '85 Bears and '00 Ravens. Read Jerry Sullivan's article from today, he has many more excellent questions that the Bills have no answers for these days, but this has got to be the sorriest offensive line I have ever seen in Bills uniforms. Unless they decide to start playing up to their size this week against the Browns, and then continue to play with drive and motivation the rest of the season, I would not be surprised to see all of them gone by next season. -
Hi I'm Dick Jauron and I'm here to defend my performance and my team's performance. "It's hard to win in the NFL." That is my motto, my mantra, the sentence I live up to every day as an NFL head coach. Even if my team plays a perfect game and blows another team out, I will do my best to make it hard for them from the sidelines. "It's hard to win in the NFL" was the first sentence out of my mouth when I was hired, and it is still the only thing I believe in today. So just leave me alone, let me continue to coach here in Buffalo in my own human-emotions-less way, and please just remember that "It's hard to win in the NFL." Any more questions? Great, now I'm off to work 20 hours a day with my coordinators and come up with a gameplan for the Browns that will absolutely not surprise them in any way shape or manner.

Why don't we just forfeit the game???
VJ91 replied to THEDuganWolcott's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Circle the wagons once again? First of all, the wagons have been in storage since Thurman Thomas ran for over 150 yards against the Dolphins in the last playoff game the Bills actually played in and WON, way back after the 1995 season. Secondly, there is absolutley no way this Bills team can beat the Pats in New England tomorrow, so save your sarcasm for another opponent another week. Hey, looking at the schedule, Buffalo could very well be 8-4 heading into the final month of the season. But they won't be 6-3 heading home from New England tomorrow night! -
Pats 24 Bills 10 Brady or no Brady, the Bills are not ready to win in New England yet. Langston Walker tells us it's more "mental" then anything else. When you stand 6'7 and weigh over 300 pounds, how much thought does it take to run people over? Plus, the defense now sucks too, as proven when they let Favre stroll down the field for 8 minutes after they pulled within 6 points late in the game last week. Injuries are mounting again this year, and now Trent Edwards has had two bad games in a row. Looking ahead at their schedule, if they start pulling their "mental" heads out of their butts, they could very well be 8-4 in a month. But after tomorrow, they will be 5-4, guaranteed. If things turn around after tomorrow, they could break the New England jinx at home game 16. But not tomorrow fans. Forget it. No way do they win tomorrow.

Derek Dockery and Langston Walker were overpaid by tens of millions to come in as free agents two years ago. Duke Preston looks like a career back up after getting his head smashed in play after play by the Jets D-line Sunday. Oh wait, he actually looks like exactly what he was - a 4th round draft choice. Of course that's better lately then the other high paid free agent the Bills signed a few years ago, Melvin Fowler, who can't even beat out Preston. Brad Butler, by the way, when healthy, is a 6th round draft choice. I don't remember what round Whittle was drafted in, because he's in like his 13th year now. And Jason Peters - the best of all of them, was a rookie free-agent undrafted tight end when he came to Buffalo. And as Buffalo luck would have it, his first trip to the Pro Bowl as a left tackle made him a legend in his own mind, and now his STUPID hold out is costing the team heavily. Folks, that is one sad offensive line story for an NFL franchise today. Mike Williams was the last offensive linemen the Bills drafted in the first round back in what, 2002 or 2003? Year after year the Bills braintrust have passed on drafting offensive linemen in the first, or even second, or even THIRD rounds, and now they are paying for it dearly. Whatever happens this season, playoffs an 8-8 year or worse, I think it's time for Russ Brandon and Dick Jauron to start drafting offensive linemen on day one of the draft next year!

TBN / Bob DiCesare: Bills Froze at the Gonzalez table
VJ91 replied to SKOOBY's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I agree with you on this one! Just look at the trade Buffalo did make yesterday. I was a FIRST ROUNDER they shipped off to Indy for the secret undisclosed draft pick based on lazy McCargo's production. Nothing makes sense when teams are judging draft picks. If Peterson would have offered TG to Brandon for McCargo AND a 4th round pick, Brandon would have jumped all over that trade. But at the same time, Russ would not offer a future 2nd round pick who could end up being another miss just like McCargo. And I cannot emphasize this point enough, Buffalo gave up an extra draft pick to get back into the first round to draft McCargo. Here's the scariest part of this trade to Indy....Brandon made the trade with Bill Polian. Based on Polian's record, we can expect to see McCargo in the Pro Bowl a year or two from now, while TG retires as a Kansas City Chief or with another team he ends up getting traded to next year, now that Brandon has officially given up on getting him. When Russ became CEO or whatever his actual title is, he should have given himself one rule never to break, DO NOT TRADE WITH BILL POLIAN. -
If I have to watch even just one more Jets highlight with them wearing those God-awful uniforms this season, I will get sick. I'm just hoping they don't wear those things for either Bills games this season. Compare those to the Chargers throw backs from the same time period! Or our Bills colors from back then. What were they thinking in New York back then??? I understand the Steelers throw backs being ugly because they came out back in the 30's or 40's. Same with the Packers. But this was the best they could do in 1959-60 for a team from New York City?
-
I'll be disapointed if Brandon allows TG to go to the Giants or another team for anything higher then a 3rd round draft pick. Brandon used this years' 3rd rounder to draft Ellis, the defensive end that can't even practice his way onto the game day roster from week to week so far this year. He used his fourth round pick on Derek Fine, a rookie tight end that nobody thought would ever become another TG, even if he didn't get injured this season. And these are the types of draft picks that Brandon and most of you fans think are so valuable to protect against trading for a 33 year old future Hall of Fame tight end with no serious injury problems, who just came off a 99 catch season last year, and who wants to play for a team that has a chance to win now?? This is the time to be bold, tonight, to make a trade ESPN will actually have to mention Buffalo made if they get TG, as much as they despise mentioning the 4-1 Bills. I say Brandon should throw caution to the wind and just plain offer KC the best draft pick or combination of two draft picks of all the teams bidding, and get the guy into a Bills jersey. Who would blame him for "overpaying" for the best tight end available when the Bills have such an obvious need at tight end during such a promising season?

OK, it's bye week storytime. Share:

I was born the same official year Ralph brought the AFL to Buffalo - 1959. My Dad was a Bills nut and loved the upstart AFL. I remember watching some games growing up on TV, but my official love affair with the Bills began on a gorgeous fall day in 1968. The Bills were terrible and I was 9. That was the day I went to my first Bills game at the Rock Pile. Joe Namouth and the Jets were in town, and he threw 5 interceptions, two or three of wich the Bills ran back for touchdowns. The Bills won the game something like 38-35, which I think ended up being their only win that season with a tie to go along with 12 losses. I could be wrong. One thing I do remember is Joe Willie bounced back pretty well from that ugly performance in that ugly old stadium. I loved watching him and the Jets upset the Colts in that same year's Super Bowl to shock the NFL into realizing the AFL was here to stay, and merger was just around the corner. Those two games - one in person and the other on TV, cemented my passion for the Bills and pro football forever. And rooting for the Jets like they were my team against the rival NFL big bad Colts, guaranteed I would always root for the AFL - AFC team in every Super Bowl - it's automatic, I can't help myself. I will always be an AFL - AFC fan first. -
What must be fixed to make playoffs?!?
VJ91 replied to Biggwigg's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think the coaching is more of a concern the then talent. With the speed and youth the bills have at linebacker and d-back, how on earth could Fewell decide not to blitz that old war horse every single play? Fewell even shocked the Cardinals, because they came out with quick passes to offset the blitzing that Fewell would most certainly have the Bills doing.....right? WRONG. How hard could the Cards' coaches been laughing after the game as Warner beat the Bills with that quick pass game while the Bills didn't blitz anyway? Here's another question. With all those guys in pass coverage not blitzing, why were all those Cards running free playing catch with Warner unimpeded? So what was Fewell's game plan in the first place? On offense, it's time to practice run blocking. These practices I read about in today's NFL are such a joke. They can only be 90 minutes long and there is not time to give your second string QB more then two lousy snaps all week? And how much time do those 300 lb behemouths really spend practicing their run blocking?? In todays' over coached NFL, all they seem to do is come out Wednesday and memorize the game plans the assistant coaches spend 105 hours a week schemeing for an hour and a half, and then the same for the defense for their hour and a half on Thursday , and the rest of the week what do they really do? Classroom study? Play video games? Get treatment? Where is Vince Lombardi making his team run plays over and over until they can't breathe until they get them right?? If Edwards needs more then these two weeks to recover, then the coaches had better find some "time" to drill the O-line's butt off on their run blocking, because Losman will need the running game to get through however many games he plays without losing them by bumbling around with his passing game. -
I'll never forget listening on the radio to the reaction of Ralph Wilson's hiring of Marv Levy to replace Tom Donahoe a few years ago. Ralph made an unfortunate joke about he and Marv becoming a modern version of the "sunshine boys", and one of the arrogant morning shows used that soundbite to absolutely mock the hell out of it. They ended their laughing with a comment like "what a total mess up there in Buffalo." I wonder how hard the media geniuses from St. Louis, Detroit, Cincinnati and Houston laughed along with those idiots on that morning show about Wilson reaching out to his trusted old friend to help turn his sinking ship around for a couple of years? If the Lions were smart, they should replace Millen with Marv for two years themselves....riight now!

Believe? What's not to believe? The Bills are 3-0 alone in first place. I assume that many posters out here and some jerks will be looking at the negative fact that the Bills could have and should have beaten the Raiders easily. I was only trying to suggest one way they may have helped themselves to do just that. That one pass to Hardy he dropped was the only one I say thrown to him all day. Watch how Dallas uses Jason Whitten, their big tight end, on quick short routes that bail them out of long yardage situations. As if the Bills couldn't use Hardy the same way! As for the negative jerks, "cheers" to the idiot from Rochester who called into Vic Carucci on the post game show and rambled mockingly on about how the Bills should used Trent Edwards at middle linebacker because of how smart he is. Who are you people who can't enjoy the fact that Edwards looks like the real deal? We've only waited 12 years since Kelly retired to have a young capable QB at the helm, and still some fans? out there refuse to give this kid any credit.
-
It seems to me James Hardy deserves to be used more during the game. All he did was go up and grab a tough high pass and keep both feet in by inches to score the winning TD against the Jags the week before. Then he's "rewarded" for that catch by being firmly planted on the bench yesterday. I don't get it. The first 3 quarters, when the Raiders were coming from all angles and the Bills O-Line was nothing more then a revolving door, Hardy could have been utilized. With his height, he would have been a perfect target in quick 3 step drops by Edwards as he was getting blitzed. The kid can run after the catch too, so a couple of quick high passes to the sideline or over the middle could have kept a couple of those short drives alive when the Bills were struggling.

OT- Does anyone else feel bad for Ed Hochuli?
VJ91 replied to Lt. Dan's Revenge's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Hochuli did his job! He got the call wrong, so what? NFL officials are human beings. They make mistakes. But the owners are making a bigger mistake by allowing the refs to blow their damn whistles before plays like that one finsih. That stupid whistle was an insult to the entire replay system the NFL has spent so much time and money on perfecting over the past 20 years. Now they need to perfect the system a little more. This crap where QB's lose their grip on the ball and either fumble it or are able to hold onto it until their arm goes forward an inch converting the fumble to an incomplete pass has gone on long enough. That play needs a rule change all to itself: Very simple. Even if the refs think the QB was able to make an incomplete pass - motion out of the play, he must still allow the play to go on until the ball is recovered by either team. Then he can make his ruling, and either team can go ahead and challange it if they think he is wrong. So Hochuli would have swallowed his infamous whistle until that Charger was forced out of bounds with Cutlers' fumble. Then he would have ruled the play an incomplete pass and awarded the ball back to the Broncos. The play is immediately reviewed by the replay officials because it was within the last two minutes of the game. Hochuli checks under the hood and sees what everyone else saw, and overturns his call and awards the ball rightfully over to the Chargers. He still would have blown the call, but nobody would have cared because the replay challange system would have saved the day. It is time to let the replay technology take the "Tuck Rule" out of the officials hands once and for all. -
Here's the simple rule change for next season: On close calls where change of possession may or may not be the outcome, officials will NOT blow the whistle until the play comes to an end. That's it, as easy as that. So Ed Hocule doesn't have to have his 18 year reputation ruined because of one horrible call where he blew his whistle for an incomplete pass. Forget automatic whistles on plays that close now that replay is such an instrumental part of the NFL. What's the worst that could have happened had Ed not blown his whistle, allowed the play to end, and then not ruled until he looked at the monitor? He still could have ruled an incomplete pass if the evidence was on the screen, and it still would have been Broncos ball at the same line of scrimmage. But look at the best outcome of swallowing his whistle on that play! Chargers get the ball, even the Broncos admitted it was a fumble, and Ed Hocule does not get "marked down" by the NFL. San Diego doesn't feel cheated, and life goes on. I have always hated the whistle that ruins the chance for a replay. Now it's time to get rid of it once and for all. It doesn't happen that many times in a game, and players are programed to play until they hear the whistle blow in any curcumstance. So I don't buy the crap that players could get hurt. Just let the play run it's course, owners, and then this can never happen again.

Bad enough Jason Peters accomplished nothing for himself by holding out all preseason. (What kind of idiot does that with 3 years left on his contract?). Worse still, he's running his mouth after all of one practice (with hardly any live hitting mind you) that he's good to go. No problems, he worked out in 105 degree Texas. I really hope I'm wrong here, but if Jauron lets Peters start or even play more then maybe 2 or 3 series down in Jacksonville, I see pulled hammys or worse for our "family man" Mr. Peters. I don't care how different the NFL is today. Peters has not hit or taken a hit since last December. He should take at least two solid weeks of full practices before he starts. Just my opinion. Like I said, I hope I'm wrong, and Peters comes out and plays a Pro Bowl type game if he starts or plays, injury free. But the truth is Jauron does not need to play him at all for at least a couple more weeks based on how well the line performed against Seattle. I think it's more Peters' insecure ego motivating him to rush back in then anything else. I wonder if he would be so eager to start if Seattle had blown up Chambers and Walker for 6 sacks and Jauron was desperate to get him back in?

John Henderson says Stroud in for a "butt whipping"
VJ91 replied to DIE HARD 1967's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
AGAIN. I just noticed that Barnes and Pashos are the tackles. You know, with all of these back ups and unknowns blocking on the Jags O-line, it really is stupid for Henderson, Taylor and Del Rio to be saying anything other then something like: "Marcus Stroud is still an excellent tackle and we have the utmost respect for him." The Jets are giving more props to Matt freakin' Cassel then the Jags are offering to the healthy and super motivated Stroud! I say good luck Jacksonville, you certainly are not making your back up interior linemans job any easier by reminding the world why you traded Stroud to the Bills over and over. -
John Henderson says Stroud in for a "butt whipping"
VJ91 replied to DIE HARD 1967's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
That's right, I was thinking about the butt whipping Stroud had just given Chris Spencer last Suncday and confused him with the journeyman center Stroud will be whipping the butt of this Sunday down in Jacksonville, whoever that poor soul (Barnes or Pashos) ends up being. Thanks for the correction.
