Preston as the long-term backup Center?
VJ91 replied to 2020 Our Year For Sure's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I like your Dick-O-Meter, it offers some valid reasons why the Bills might want to give him those extra three years. I really don't think he's as good as most of those other coaches, but who knows, right? But I disagree with your thinking on Preston. The young vet has only just begun starting some games this season, and he's doing fine. It makes me think the Bills should have used him more last year to replace the weakling Fowler. If the Bills go first to third round on OL, they have bigger needs at G & OT then C, in my opinion. Dockery could be the worst 7 million a year any team has spent in NFL history, and Walker, while well spoken, is more fat then strong and his 5 million a year is also extremely over priced. And Brad Butler? Nice 6th rounder who unfortunatly seems injury prone. Plenty of need there to use a first day pick before center, with Preston improving. -
How I wish we went after Brees 2 years back...

I agree. Bad weather, lousy OL not withstanding, having Brees in his third year in Buffalo would be a hell of alot better then Edwards in his second right about now. -
YES WE WON - but why is everyone talking playoffs still

And thank you for being positive. You are my idol. Now please qualify your reasons for being positive. You really think the Bills will go at least 4-1 the last five games? You really think the Ravens, Colts, Pats and Dolphins will all go 3-2 or worse to allow the Bills to win a tie breaker and get that last spot at 10-6? I love the Bills. I want them to win. But reality has a way of curtailing my enthusiasm. That 47 yard wide-right miss against the Browns really cost the Bills any realistic chance of making the playoffs this season. But if they somehow get in, I will be happy about it, just like you. -
Can someone explain Marshawn's troubles?
VJ91 replied to apulshunny's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't know if I qualify as articulate, but I'll give it a try. The one obvious comparison to those other backs you mentioned is the offensive lines they run behind. Buffalo has the very worst run-blocking offensive line for their size I can ever remember watching in my over 40 years as a Bills fan. Lynch is breaking tackles before he gets to the line in far too many carries for any running back to have to deal with. Secondly, how many carries do those other backs get? I don't care to look it up, but my bet is they all get over 20 every game. Turk makes sure Lynch gets 20 or less every game. Now he has Jackson getting almost as many carries as Marshawn, and he always makes sure the passes are equal to the runs. Despite his first round status, Lynch is not used like a feature back in Shoenerts' offense. Finally, it's not his speed that people admire. It's his amazing strength and ability to break tackles. If those slobs in front of him had been blocking the way they have finally begun blocking the past two weeks, Lynch would be right up there with those other backs in yards per carry, if not total yards. Like I said above, Marshawn just doesn't get the number of carries to compete for total yard rushing. Ask Dick Jauron why on that one. -
That's pretty good production to get cut in mid-season. The Bills should take a good look at signing him.

If my mind is closed, then I guess that means that your mind is closed to my argument too. And if I have an opinion that I believe in, yes I suppose nobody will convince me to change my mind. That is called debating your convictions. Watch either version - the old one from the 50's or the newer one from the 90's, of the movie "12 Angry Men". You'll find out the merits of sticking with your beliefs. And your welcome for my warning.

VJ91 replied to Poeticlaw's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Don't worry about eating crow. No way the Bills go better then 3-2-0 in their last 5 games, and 9-7-0 may be enough for Dick to keep his job, but it won't get into the playoffs this year. I can't imagine New England, Baltimore, Indy and the Dolphins all playing under 500 football the rest of the way to allow Buffalo a chance at sneaking in at 9-7-0. I think the two wildcards will be 11-5-0 and 10-6-0 this season. -
Great point. There is no point dwelling on it. I never thought I would have gotten such a rise out of calling Perry Fewell out for not playing his number one draft pick this year, while the starters in front of him have played so badly.

Thank you for those wise words. Hindsight is 20/20, and a bird in hand is better then two in the bush. It is better to have loved and lost, then never to have loved at all. It's not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game. (That's Dick's favorite, by the way). Oh here's a more recent classic: You play to win the game. And my all time best quote ever: Playoffs, did you say playoffs?...Playoffs? That must be your favorite, because you can defend these coaches all you want, but the Bills chances are about as good as Jim Mora's Colts were the day he uttered those great words. Yes hindsight is 20/20, but Leodis McKelvin could have made a couple plays against the Dolphins to maybe steal a win down there, don't you think??
-
Yes the Chiefs are a terrible team overall. But Thigpen had been improving steadily the past few weeks and had like 8 TD's vs. 2 Ints, and had a completion pctg over 60%. Plus as you may have noticed yesterday, Johnson is back running hard again and Gonzalez had another Pro Bowl type game despite his team losing by 20 points. Hey, the Bills defense overall didn't really play that well, come to think of it. But Leodis McKelvin did not look lost to me, and that run back for the TD was classic speed kills type stuff. And nobody will convince me he could not have helped on defense these past 4 weeks before yesterday, if Fewell would have given him more reps during those games.

Anyone Else Get Really PO As The Game Went On?
VJ91 replied to grog's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Great post. Absolutely I was pissed to see Houston beat the Browns. I was pissed about a lot of things regarding the Bills' recent 4 game slide before waking up yesterday. Being out-coached by Romeo Crennell was just one of those things. I'm with you 100%, it is most likely too late for the Bills to win their way into the playoffs, even if they do win every game down the stretch, they already don't have their destiny in their own hands, and it's not even December yet. But if they do reach 8-5-0, I will respect the coaches for not giving up and trying to salvage the season. -
If Turk doesn't continue to keep things simple, and if Perry hides McKelvin back on the bench despite the talent and potential for making plays he displayed yesterday as a raw rookie, then the Bills may not even beat the 49ers at home next week, much less go 5-0 down the stretch. Hate me for raining on the parade of a nice win over a struggling Chiefs team yesterday, but Edwards came right out and said it live on CBS: he played better because the gameplan was dumbed down. It was vanilla, because of a short week. Wow, what does that tell you about Shoenert's schemes and formations? And Leodis McKelvin needs to stay on the field, I don't care who sits in his place. Just my humble opinion.
-
Yes I do. I'm miserable every day.....after the Bills blow their chances to make the playoffs each season. I enjoyed the 54 points and the easy win over the horrible Chiefs yesterday. I cheered. I high fived. Then I woke up and looked at the AFC standings and the realization sunk in that the Bills are the worst team contending for a wild card at 6-5-0. Pissed me right off. Remember when the Bills were 5-1 after that nice win over San Diego last month? I woke up happy that next morning. But I guess you don't care about playoffs, huh? You just get overjoyed and want to throw a parade when the Bills win a game they should win, right? Well, sue me for wanting more then that for my favorite NFL team. And it really pissed me off watching Leodis McKelvin play so well against an offense that had been playing pretty good and improving the past few weeks. Why? Because Perry Fewell told us McKelvin could not play that well.
-
Bill, you're right, there had been little to no pass rush during those 4 losses. But who cares about rookies learning the game when the team is playing so badly? How about him infusing some excitement into the defense by making great plays like his two interceptions yesterday, despite the fact he still hasn't learned the game? Come on, I know the Bills won big yesterday so we all like the coaches better today. But they drafted this kid with the intention of playing him right away, and Greer and Corner certainly have not proven to me that they should be playing in front of him, despite how much more experienced or smarter they might be. I never said he should start in front of McGee. But I think we would have seen a better result against Ginn Jr. if he would have started in place of the injured McGee a few weeks ago in Miami.
-
Rookie corners cost you games. So what? He certainly did nothing to cost the Bills' their recent 4 consecutive losses sitting on the bench watching his fellow CB's cost the Bills' those games, did he? Jauron didn't pull Edwards because Losman is worse. Which makes me wonder why management didn't get rid of Losman and find a veteran back up they could have a little more trust in to help Edwards through these tough times. I don't think J.P. has anything of value to offer Trent as far as sage advice while he struggles.
-
What coverage sequences are you referring to exactly? And how much better were those other CB's coverage sequences when the Bills lost 4 games in a row, being torched by every QB?
-
So those proven starters, when healthy, were doing a terrific job against Warner, Pennington, Favre and even of all people, Quinn, right? They were playing lights out right? And even when McGee was injured, he was a much better option then the talented McKelvin, right? And of course, let's not forget Fewell putting Reggie Corner in ahead of Leodis too. Corner was a much better option right? When the starters and other back ups are playing LOUSY in front of the rookie CB, yes, I'm afraid Fewell really does need better excuses not to start him or at least let him play the nickel in front of them. And my point was proven yesterday. Wow, one win over a lousy team and all of a sudden we are defending our coaches to the wall.
-
Yes I'm making it all up. Dick Jauron is a great coach. I'm sorry to upset you. You're a Bills believer, and I'm not. Thank you for correcting my post. I'll watch for all of your posts defending eveything Dick does from now on.

Is there any better proof that the NFL has become a league of ego-maniac coaches then Leodis McKelvin's performance yesterday? All we heard up until the kid was forced to start due to injuries, was that he just wasn't ready to play in the complicated Perry Fewell schemes. He was not smart enough to know where to line up or read what was happening. He needed another 7 million hours of film study to be worthy to play in Fewell's defense. So all the kid does in the first game he starts is make two interceptions and run one of them back for a TD. Or how about this for proof: Edwards telling CBS after the game that the biggest reason he played so well was that Schonert went vanilla and dumbed-down his schemes and formations because of the short week! All Edwards does is throw for two TD's and run for two more. Let me understand this. Not only does Dick Jauron do nothing but screw up on gameday, he also allows his coordinators to wipe out his playmakers ability to make plays with their talent and instincts by over-complicating their formations and schemes. Yes sir, Dick Jauron really runs a great NFL team. Here's the ironic part. For him to keep his job, he obviously needs to tell his coordinators not to work so hard during the week, and just let his talented players play. I wonder if Dick can even manage to do that much right for the next 5 weeks?
-
Wow, great observations. Allow me to simplify: James Hardy can't memorize his play book and remember his routes. You call him unpolished, I call him lazy. As a second round draft pick, he should be taking all the time he needs to understand routes in the NFL. What the heck else does he need to do on any given day? Radio shows? TV shows? Madden '09? Out clubbing till 4:00 AM? He should be ashamed of himself now that 7th rounder Johnson is playing in front of him. For years we look forward to a tall receiver, and the Bills draft a 6'5 air head who isn't trusted to even run 4 steps, turn around and catch a high 5 yard pass on 3rd and 4. Or how about 1 yard? Was he on the field for that pathetic 3rd and one last Monday when Turk had 4 wide outs and an empty backfield? If he was, how could he not be the one to throw the quick jump ball to for 2 or 3 yards? Why did Edwards throw that duck over to the sidelines to somebody completely covered? I have no idea what Hardy will become. Right now I'm not liking him or his lack of effort very much. I'm rooting for Stevie Johnson to keep improving and become the steal of the draft.

I wake up this morning blessed to be a Bills fan
VJ91 replied to Drew026's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I admire your passion and congratulate you on attending your first game. There is nothing like that first Bills' game, and mine was 40 years ago in the actual stadium they called the Rock Pile, old War Memorial Stadium in downtown Buffalo. I'm turning 50 in January and I don't feel any less passionate about the Bills then you do at 20. But I gotta tell you Drew026, after 40 years of watching excruciating losses like the one you are so excited about attending last night, I am really glad my days of sitting out there losing my voice and freezing my ass off are over. Been there, done that. The Bills organization is lucky that they can still draw young passionate fans like yourself into the stadium during this 10 year funk they are in. I hope for your sake they finally end this franchise-record steak of seasons without playoffs in the next couple of years. It looks pretty hopeless for them again this season. Oh I've cheered for some bad Bills' teams from 1968 through today, don't get me wrong. But I was also fortunate enough to be in my late 20's to late 30's when the best Bills' teams of all time played every week and went to the playoffs every year and to the Super Bowl four consecutive years. No other team in NFL history has played in four straight Super Bowls, and despite the fact they lost all four, those were my years of owning season tickets and going on road trips to Cleveland, New England, Indy and Cincinnati, and even one Super Bowl trip to watch the Bills play in it live against Washington in Minneapolis in 1992. So I can feel your excitement for the Bills. I really hope they reward it the way I was rewarded when I was a young fan just a few years older then you going to the games! -
What Dick really meant to say was, "Certainly we want to be 10-0, but right now we are 5-5 and we will take it because I am a horrible game-day coach, a horrible motivator because I have no human emotions, and a horrible interview because I am void of any type of personality."
-
Another McGahee? You have to be joking. If you saw him in pregame warm ups and running up the tunnel after the game, why didn't you watch his effort during the game? He was easily the best player on the field for Buffalo, and he was certainly fired up after every good play he made. Over 100 yards rushing (finally), over 50 yards receiving, 10 catches. a TD. and you think he wants out of Buffalo? Marshawn Lynch showed the heart of a champion on the field last night. Who cares if he didn't feel like socializing before or after the game? Did you ever watch Marvin Harrison during his Hall of Fame career for the Colts the past 14 years? The guy never speaks to anyone and sits by himself the entire game, every game.

Jerry & Dan, the owners with more money to spend. I'll give you that. But that doesn't mean Wilson still can't make a serious offer. One head coach, even if Wilson offered him Coach-GM, can cost a team up to about 5 to 6 million a year for an elite one, and that has to be the most even Miami is spending on Parcells to be team-king. Wilson and the Bills can afford that, especially since that money does not count against the cap. Cowher won his Super Bowl playing for a frugal long-time second generation owner in a bigger yet similar city in Pittsburgh. Maybe he won't need to make the most money in a huge market like Dallas or Washington where the pressure to win immediately will be immense, and his owners will be all over his butt day in and day out. Maybe Bill Cowher figures he doesn't need that kind of daily crap. Maybe Cowher might like the smaller market where yes, the media and fans are nuts, but the 90 year old owner and young smart vice president won't be all over every single thing he does and says like Snyder and Jones would be. All I know is Wilson is 90, and Cowher is available if he wants to coach again right now. It makes too much sense not to go for it.
-
Other then Cowher flat out refusing to come to Buffalo under any circumstances, I would like to have Wilson and Brandon explain why they shouldn't make a huge effort to sign him to a lucrative 5 year contract. Wilson is 90 years old, what excuses over money can he possibly have left at this age? Toronto has added more to his pot, and doesn't he really want to have another shot to win a SB before he dies? Cowher has it all. He sucks at being a studio commentator, so he needs a new job anyway. Buffalo is the perfect type of city for him to add to his Hall of Fame career, if he does even want to coach again. Is there a bigger challange in the NFL today? His boss would be a Brandon, young guy who can learn a lot from spending 5 years watching him work. Cowher can handle personel decisions, since he didn't win his Super Bowl in Pittsburgh until he won that power battle with Donahoe. And Wilson can finally erase the Donahoe mistake by bringing in the guy who got him kicked out of Pittsburgh. Win, win, win decision all the way around. Only a naive idiot can still believe that Jauron can ever take an NFL team to a championship. Even if his team won the next 6 regular season games despite his moronic gameday coaching to make the playoffs, he will absolutely find a way to lose in the playoffs in a way that will obviously be his fault. The bigger the game, the less prepared he is on game day.
