I absolutely HATE our team’s focus on Special Teams
DrPJax replied to FireChans's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It has changed some , but field position is still statistically important concerning wins. We are not spending huge money on it but great investment with Bass , cut bojo because of cost , and held onto our LS. Bass was critical last year. We let Roberts go because of money as well. So your argument about spending too much has huge leaks. Special teams now sets your teams field position and look up the stats on winning related to offense starting field position, or their chance to score tds. When a hof coach like levy states how important s t play is, and a guy like Tasker also has that belief ( eg, if a guy lets a punt bounce vs catching it , you lose an avg of 20 yards on the exchange). It’s the one play you purposely turn it over to the other team, so it will come into play at critical times. Look up a recent interview of tasker on Buffalo fanatics ( Rico hosted) on YouTube , it was great and will change/ open your mind. Was done this week. -
Guy is a click bait prick type; I mean can you ever see yourself wanting to hang out or have a drink with this idiot. Totally a narcissist. Beane specifically said it’s not a competition, it’s insurance, it’s a reset for Mitch, he will be here one year esp as can’t afford to keep him when Allen is due to be paid. Will be either trade bait later in the year or even next year possibly before they let him go. Best scenario , he is good insurance for a year but doesn’t hit field till last game which is meaningless and he comes in , kills it, and some team like the Raiders, Saints, WFT ( btw , does anyone else have their brain read this as WTF when you see it? Just habit!) desperate after a year of poor qb play comes calling ! Not a bad move really. Just hope draft works out. Will be happy with off season totally if we somehow land Ertz! Need a good tight end per Beane last year ( need more fro position) , and consistency is important. Knox may never get there. It’s not about a mentor for Knox. He will be a third year pro. By then you get it or you don’t; rookies need mentors. We need a red zone consistent threat and one more guy we can depend on for third down beside Beasley.
-
Exactly according from Beanes tweets. Here ti reset his career for a year an then move on to starting job elsewhere. Good move from that point. Good one year insurance policy. Will be tough in short term on josh / Barkley but Josh is too focused to let this have any significant long term impact.
-
Btw, polian did lose his job after not hiring a good backup qb. Have heard him lament about that on Sirius several times and admitted it was a bad philosophy.
-
Beane already tweeted they only expect him here for a year as a rest for him. Will be trade capital. Fromm may be long term backup plan.
-
Give credit to guy who posted about the jet being in Chicago. Just never thought it was for backup qb. Greyhound would have sufficed or maybe Uber as part of signing bonus. 😀
-
Well this is shocking. Who knows,,,,just hope he doesn’t hit the field till game 17. Rudolf already gone and ertz still unsigned and this is a priority? What about continuity; Barkley beat the fins first team last year. He had great relationship with josh. Don’t like this move a great deal. But.should Allen go down for 3 games maybe this makes sense. Trade bait after a year perhaps? Ok move based on trade bait as quoted by Beane ,to be gone after a year. Barkley tweets he is gone and thanks. Rough move in about room.

This is a classic he said she said type of scenario. I thought that original post by that attorney looked to be really sleazy and this thing stinks. just somebody trying to get money. Unless there was an active camera or a hidden camera going which would raise ethical concerns abou a massage therapist, I don’t see how this goes anywhere and is something that will be quickly dismissed. I don’t think it has any effect on what happens to Watson Listening to Trent Dilfer on the Pat McAfee show, he really feels like the relationship with the Texans is over and that there’s no way Watson returns and Tyrod probably starts while grooming a draft project. Dilfer feels the fins are the prob landing spot with all the draft capital , still Jets with 2 Nd pick could yet be in play. Biggest take from Dilfer, who is very well spoken and logical, is that Watsons relationship with Texans is beyond repair and I think Dilfer has enough inside experience to be credible Not great news as I bet he ends up in Miami ( let’s hope Pats are not in this, unlikely they would have brought Cam back if they were making a big push) and the AFC East could get very competitive just one year after Brady left.
-
Just Quick note that Micah Hyde is going to be on the Pat McAfee show on YouTube in the next few minutes it’s about 2:25 PM eastern time and he’s going to be on the McAfee show along with Hawk and the guys. Should interesting. Ertz and FA talk with FA Pending hope it’s OK to post that.

Not feasible for that purpose. Will be investigated by the league. If false , life goes on and Texans won’t release an innocent person. If guilty, no one will touch him until it’s over as league susoensions will be pending and trade impossible. No one in their right mind during this me too culture concocts something damaging to a reputation like this just to get released. Loss of all sponsorships etc and it’s impossible to be seen the same or fully recover a reputation. I have learned to distrust law firms who will do anything to make money on others pain, so releasing something during a high profile time period for the NFL would not be beyond belief, but this seems like a strange way / reach etc to announce something as grave as sexual assault charges. Why announce a case before filing which would become public quickly.any how? Seems very strange , unethical type behavior. But as I said, almost nothing done by firms with possible large recoveries involved would completely shock me these days. I certainly see no possible way Watsons management would ever be an instigator because backlash would be impossible to overcome.if that’s what you are theorizing. Will see the truth soon enough

Nice call and analysis. Props to you ! Any investment advice? 😀😊. Henceforth in 2021 I will think of you as Swami ngbills! Nice to see guys on here who know their stuff!

Beane is like a used car salesman ! How did he get anything from Atl foe Lee? Truly the WIZARD !

Good points. Brown was 8 mil. Brown was listed as 48 th best FA available while sanders was listed as 86 th best available. Analyst said might be a red flag or concerning that Saints were willing to let him go after just signing him. Plus side, he does have playoff and super bowl experience. Something to be said for making him the 3 rd wr option, but most don’t see him as a legit two now. I am not making a case for brown or sanders as I actually hoped we went after Samuels, Ertz, or someone more of a threat, so don’t come after me. Just pointing out perceived values by others. It does raise question why they couldn’t have asked Brown to get down to 6 mil but chose to not negotiate at all. Really means they were quite disappointed with his playoff performance x2 or injury is a big issue. Maybe we use extra pick fro lee to Atlanta to help acquire Ertz!
-
Hmmm one year 6 mil deal. Not much savings over brown. Guess they felt Brown was truly done. A little surprised at the cost.

Shaquill Griffin, Chris Carson & Kyle Van Noy

Griffen just went to the jags. -
This makes getting our running game going that much more important. We can sustain long drives as well with a good running gsme but also we have a quick strike ability the pats won’t have with Cam. Can’t do a few series where josh is off or starts slow and a quarter goes by without us touching the ball offensively. If we can run it, tho he will come down to a possession or two in the 4 th quarter and I Ike Josh to come thru then. But we can’t just pass. Pats also picked up 4 new guys to their d to cover, and to rush. We better be able to do The opposite of what Bb tries to take away , and make our O so he can’t take EVERY option away. Also pats getting all the d guys that opted out last year. They are a significantly different and probably better team. Right at this moment we are who we were, minus a vet reciever in Brown. Our edge is QB,,,,, so emphasize that edge. Give him more weapons. A better RB, / run game, better TE for the seams , and stabilize that damn o line to keep josh protected. Josh is the one thing Bb and the pats can’t compare to , so play up our advantage and just do the best we can with the d. Get josh a weapon at 30 , take a lesson from Reid who tooK CEH!
-
Sure looks like a huge push ; with the two tight ends I wonder if the pats are taking a cue from the ravens. With Cam playing the role if Lamar, it wouldn’t surprise me if they try a power run game ( they have picks to easily draft a very good back) with double tight ends and adequate wrs compared to last year. also addressed their rush with Judon. Been a pretty impressive couple of days with the draft still to come. That type of offense plays against our weakness against the run and tight ends. Pats really making moves that I think will make them the toughest competition in the East , as I think the fins will be limited by tua and his progression. If the pats either draft a qb or heaven forbid , somehow get a better.vet than Cam, this is going to be a tough year. We are limited by the cap so we may make one or two second tier additions and then hope we get some impact for this year in the first / second round. I am leaning toward making our strength stronger by shooting for etienne if possible , allowing our O to score with anyone. Not sure how effectively we can fix the rush with what’s left out there ( clowney ?) or hoping on getting an impactful edge guy as late as 30. BeAne did well holding onto our o line and Milano , but not sure how he can fix that rush this year. Better shore up cb2 as well with a cb who supports against the run as well as can come up to press so we don’t keep dropping in that soft zone that KC just rips apart. Pats in the division, Kc in the conference , appear to be our largest obstacles. Bb not standing still ; needs his own title without Brady.

One thing seems certain, Bill has not gotten over Brady / gronk winning one without him; kind of an in your face Bill moment that will be replayed every year before every Super Bowl. I don’t remember the Pats being this active , even before official FA opens, ever. Tight end, edge , wr, to name a few in addition to bringing back Cam. Bill seems desperate to get the afc East back as a primary goal, cuz if he was serious about the SB, I think he would be going for Watson or Wilson. IMO , Cam does not have the arm talent any longer, and he struggled intellectually with the Pats O. No one is like Brady , but Cam lacks the personality traits to excel under BB’s system where every player is treated somewhat negatively. Compare that to the culture Mcd has created in B Lo , where every player is treated as a special individual, where everyone wants to see each other thrive, to be the best version of themselves. You rarely see Mcd focus on the negative; every guy resigned stated how they loved the culture , Mcd, Beane. BB is breaking phones and cam continues to sulk on the bench at times. Just not a great fit for how BB operates, but maybe the best stopgap for one more year. One thing is certain, BB has money to throw around this year and plenty of picks , so it appears he is aggressively changing the roster more so than any time during Tb12’s last few seasons. He’s going after bigger names unlike just filling in pieces like before. I bet they grab a qb to sit behind Cam this year via the draft. It’s just different than before when the pats would be quiet in FA, trade back in the draft, etc. It’s like an angry spending spree, like an ex wife getting back at you with maxing your credit card just cuz you had a business trip with your office manager! ( no not me, my ex had an “ appointment “ with another doc while I was stuck in the hospital in my residency on call 24 hours every third day! When I filed for divorce a female judge awarded my ex 3 years of alimony so she could “get back in the work force”, no kids involved and we were only married two years ! I LOVE our court system, lawyers, etc,,,not bitter at all, hardly remember 40 year later😂)Sorry, I digress. Bill seems pissed and looks like he is determined to fix his roster quickly. The image of him breaking that phone after an ill fated challenge is emblematic of how driven he appears to be at this moment ! Btw we just re upped matakavich ( sp, Lb) as Beane continues to look like a master of reason spending with frugality ! Bet wishes BB, I hope your spree continues because no matter what, this year you still have a qb NOT ASCENDING! 😎. Go Bills!

These are great points. He was good on kickoffs tho he apparently lost enough to never break one and in two (Tenn for one) games he was terrible with taking the ball out deep from the endzone and we started inside our 20 and even the 10 once or twice. So that part I think we can break even by just starting at the 25. BUT he was great on punt returns. Guy never dropped the ball and more importantly he always caught it before it hit the ground. Tasker has stated he was taught by Marv if you let it bounce you are usually starting at an average of 20 yards closer to your own goal line. That’s huge as those 20 yards really decrease the percentage of your team scoring a td. I watched this over the years after hearing taskers emphasis on not letting punts hit the ground and it’s shocking how many guys let it bounce and roll! Roberts was sure handed and he was always in position to catch the ball. Possibly more important than an occasional chance to take one to the house. That’s what I hope whomever replaces him understands.Fielding the ball gave our O a statistically grea5er chance to score tds and was a vital part in averaging 29 Points a game. Roberts usually made great decisions, while speed from a younger player may not make up for that loss of pro bowl decision making. May be our first impactful loss this off-season, maybe more so than brown, as we went 5-0 while he was injured. Roberts , not brown , was a pro bowler for a reason.

Yep and with the introduction of the rule changing availability of assistants to interview the week before the championship gsme by the Bills org., it is a clue Mcd felt coordinators were distracted and the results spoke for themselves. We were outcoached badly twice by Reid’s staff and Daboll olan was particularly stale. pats already gearing for us with plans to attack our weaknesses: they bring in a good TE in jonnu as we struggle covering TES, and they begin beefing up their pass rush with Judson from the ravens on day 1. Teams aren’t sitting still. Good news is they still will rely on Cam. But the trend and analytics are out there to go after our weaker areas. Happy tho our line is back and this time I hope healthy as mongo pointed out , he ,Morse, Williams, Ford, Dawkins only played a handful of games together as they were hurt. This Bills squad has a camaraderie that even the 90’s teams lacked ( bickering bills) until later in their run. These guys actually like each other and they really like protecting Josh. If we can land a rb with speed and a TE to augment what we have , we can progress. Just like teams want to hit josh , we need that one last piece of an effective edge rusher. But the OP is correct , dabs and Frazier need to keep innovating. That’s how TB beat Kc with 3 deep safeties. We need a couple of new pieces but the big challenge is our coordinators creativity.
-
Which means you DGAF about getting to and winning the SB. Not going to get there with the same terrible run game as last year; not my opinion as both Beane and Mcd have said that and they emphasized run must improve. So good news for 2 Nd year together for the line, yet we will see if that’s enough to improve and not just stand in place. Big needs are still EDGE, CB2, TE, and based on draft visits , perhaps RB. Joe Miller quoted John Fina as saying run issues were scheme oriented ( funny i asked Fina same on Twitter and he claimed he was Swiss and couldn’t comment,Miller must have pressed harder and they may be doing podcast work together. Fina is really courteous on Twitter and yesterday was his BD BTW). so line looks intact and we need to hope something changes. With an entire offseason of film, our O will be analyzed so I can’t see us passing 90% with continued success. TB and Kc both have adequate run games, so no doubt we need work. Just because same interior guys are back doesn’t mean they start or that we don’t add a good guard during the draft. So great work by Beane to tread water so far, but many other teams ( esp in our division) have lots of money to be active and improve. Still hope we make a couple of moves in FA, with edge, guard, cb2, on my priority wish list. Rb wise I am ok with Williams ,motor, moss , but would add a late pick (4 th or later) for someone like trey sermon from OSU with breakaway speed. Good stuff by Beane, but treading water is ok if we are satisfied with last years results. We have to fix pass rush and run game to be serious SB TITLE contenders. Addendum; I agree I didn’t state this well. After listening to mongo, it is a good thing they all resigned and I was ignoring how they only played 5 games together because of all the injuries last year. So it’s more than treading water and it is good stability. Let’s see if the coaching can help correct scheme issues like Fina mentioned. I still stick by the idea our coordinators must be more creative. Pats got a good te already and added to their rush with Judon. They are the ones saying it starts by stopping Josh, and they obviously know we can’t cover TEs well. The signings are great continuity , yet it still is no guarantee they all still start. We let go of one extended lineman pretty quickly last year, so just signing doesn’t mean the o line work is done. I stick by the review of the all 22 film work by cover 1 who showed terrible run blocking by the guards and even Williams at times. We will still have to have some improved run gsme over last year ) to win he SB ( Beane said we were not good enough to win it last year, quoted with link in another topic). Need a better run game to take advantage of Josh’s great play action ability. Great work so far by beane but I can’t believe this is all we need to get back to last years success. Just don’t see a one dimensional offense ( running less than 5x a game) or a d where the front 4 is horrible causing pressure alone , getting past kc or th if we get that far. Am I that wrong ?

Jordan Poyer admits to being an alcoholic
DrPJax replied to Markaf431's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Always have great respect for your insight and feel a kinship as we have been here / followed the Bills many years. Just didn’t seem like your typical quality / demeanor. I mean you know this board , it’s filled with good analysis and also a lot of very funny guys posting humorous stuff all the time. It’s not some place of literary genius or puritanical thought. It is what it is, a simple message board. No one on here in my experience ever truly means to be hurtful and I am certain none here would turn their backs on Someone in need or make light of a serious illness ( look at responses to pancho / pinto Ron’s surgery / someone losing a mom or josh losing a grandmother etc), and I know alcoholism would be included. We have all said less than ideal things at times , amplified by our lack of professional comedic talent. So, why be surprised that in an attempt to lighten things , joke a little, a couple of posts missed the mark ? Ideal, no. Worthy of character assault , adding nothing more positive by calling a dick move, just adds another attack criticizing those who attacked poyer in your analysis. Perhaps it compounds things, forgetting we all.live in glass houses so who is qualified ti throw stones?! Just saying it’s a message board of people who usually stand together, nothing of real social consequence going on here, and maybe we should all defer our need to be negative. Post when adding something that should not provoke more bad feelings, and do that old thing; if you can’t be positive ( on personal attributes etc) then why not just skip by what offends you , and not add more fuel to a fire? Just saying it’s a simple message board , is it enhanced by personal judgements on character or would it be better / just as good by skipping posting at times ? Not meant as an attack on someone I really appreciate on here, just feels like sometimes a person can’t even post a legit critical OPINION-of the Bills without personal attacks levied and it’s like cancel culture run amuck. Just a simple message board and I doubt anyone here would make light of poyer s. Issue IRL, in person. Not the first or last time there will be missed attempts at humor on here; easy to scroll past ! 😊 Not meant to offend, just thinking we can keep it light here, btw, always read and enjoy your insight on the Bills! -
I bet they do 5 th year option nex year on edmunds and evaluate during that if he really is essential at MLB. We can easily keep him if we choose to with bargaining power on our side until his rookie deal expires. Having said that, unless he has a really much more impressive year than last year and learns how to use all that size to hit more impressively, or make more impact plays, I would be ok looking elsewhere. This guy needs to substantially make more impact plays. Either make more TFL, get more picks or show he can cover a tight end ( if he isn’t bailed out by the cb intercepting that pass in the end zone against Baltimore as the TE had broken away from him and had clearly beaten edmunds ), then all the hype around him is just that, Hype without substance and I am sure we could do better.
-
True but it also prevents another hole needing to be addressed. Now we ca focus in edge, cb2 , and most importantly fixing that o line with its terrible run blocking scheme. Can’t take steps back while everyone else has huge cap room ( in our division) to catch us. Great market value fell in place with need so this is win * win. Need to hold ground we have have achieved and now build on it. Can’t keep thinking all guys are easily replaced. Milano has been here and grown. That has value as a leader. More so than a one year guy like Williams for example. I think we can replace him with lots of guys coming available with cap purges or perhaps Beane even now can keep him and work on interior line and edge. Big issue is one less hole to fill and it was done with our own guy who does make a difference in this scheme.
-
Williams is replaceable , not good run blocker. Lots of edge guys going to be available, and even some good O lineman with cap purges just getting going. Get best you can of either thru one FA move , then use 30 on the other position or if an exceptional talent like etienne ever drops grab him and we can be set. Milano had more value to our scheme and this is good resigning. Watch all 22 film on Williams. Great at pass protect but at times he was horrible in the run scheme. He literally stood at times never hitting anyone and there was a reason we didn’t run that way much if he was supposedly so good; believe me it was surprising and while.I would be ok keeping him , I think if we found a guy like him last year, Beane can do it again given upcoming roster purgers because of cap casualties.
