Ok, we added 6 new Global Moderators. There are a few more I wanted to add, but I want to wait and see if this is enough. We had a tremendous response in this thread and by PM... The new mods are: Jack Beerball BuffaloBill Chandler#81 bartshan-83 Sisyphean Bills I could have easily added another 10, but decided to stop there for now. Hopefully this will give us a more active presence where if the tone is always set - then others can follow. We will have more guidelines to follow, so that everyone will know what is and what is no longer acceptable. Although not set in stone - the basic rule will be somewhat along the lines of - "Write your response like you are talking face to face to someone MUCH bigger than you." More to come...

Be careful because I think they have it trademarked... I know Celebrate Buffalo backed out of making them because of it.

Given the changes in many of our schedules and the sheer volume of posts we get every day - it is clear we need more moderation help. This is your opportunity to stop complaining about tone of the board and to actively help us steer the discussion to more friendlier territory. With that said, we are looking for 3-5 new mods who are regular visitors and who want to help make this a better place. No special computer skills needed. It is possible not all volunteers will be accepted. Please do not take offense if you volunteer and are not chosen. We appreciate the offer though... So who is ready to step up?

We moved to a new server today. What a PIA. Verizon has our old IP address cached and getting in here to make changes has been a nightmare. This should clear up in a day. New server has: 3x the RAM 4x the number of cores 64-bit OS (as opposed to 32-bit) 15k RPM SCSI drives in a RAID 1 for improved read performance... Should be fun!

You already mentioned something that raised a red flag. Your eyes have been changing every year. Surgery does nothing to prevent this change, thus if your goal is to get rid of glasses, but your eyes are still changing, you'll be back in glasses in no time. You'll need to pray that the changes in your eye are then correctable with lenses again. They might not be. You've carved a permanent prescription into your eye - thinning it in one area and now the eye may deform differently than without the surgery. Normally, "good candidates" have stable prescriptions.

because I don't believe the risks are adequately understood by those who want the procedure and I lay this blame at the feet of the "buy one surgery get one free" doctors... I've made my opinion known in the past about how this risk has been soft-peddled and here we are in 2010 just learning that the FDA basically shrugged and discarded all the side effect data because they "didn't know what to do with it". I think every potential patient should be given a bottle of eye drops and asked to put them in their eyes every 20 minutes for a month before they get their surgery - just so they can appreciate how dry their eyes might become (after all their nerves are severed creating the corneal flap, of which 65% of the nerves may recover - best case scenario). Then I would give them a pair of glasses to wear that gives them double vision and make them come back in another month.
