‘What else is there to do with someone who outright quit on his teammates in the middle of a game? By all accounts, that’s what Davis did when he took himself out and did not return for the second half, even after teammates let it be known that he was needed due to injuries and them being down another cornerback. Several players made it very clear they were upset and felt disrespected by Davis and his actions. The ten year veteran announced his retirement about two hours after the game.’

Bills release WR Kerley, sign DT Robert Thomas from practice squad
‘The Bills only had three defensive tackles heading into their second game with Star Lotulelei, Kyle Williams and Harrison Phillips after they released Adolphus Washington after Week One. Thomas was signed off of the practice squad, leaving one spot open on the Bills practice squad.’
Chargers at Bills: Sal’s keys, notes and stats
‘Shady can’t have only seven carries this week. If he does, the Bills are in for another long day. The score in Baltimore got out of hand early and, understandably, Brian Daboll had to ditch the original game plan. But even if things don’t go right early-on this week, it’s still important to keep feeding McCoy and leaning on the run game in order to take some pressure off Allen.’
Allen: “I just want to do my job, trust those around me”
‘“Obviously, I’m super excited and thankful for the chance to be the starter for this team,” the Bills’ rookie quarterback told reporters this week. “This is something I’ve dreamed [of] for a very long time, but now that it’s here, just come Sunday, [I’m] just trying to do my job. I’m not trying to do too much. [I have to be able to] trust in those around me and ultimately be the quarterback that this team needs, which is, moving the ball, staying on third down and putting points on the board.”’
Bills to start Allen against the Chargers
‘”He will be prepared. I don’t think he’s prepared yet, it’s a natural progression during the week but he will be prepared,” McDermott said at his meeting with the media. “At the end of the day, he’s a young player. We keep that all in mind, manage expectations, and know that we embrace that growth mindset. There’s going to be some challenges, some adversity, and you keep learning as you go and embrace that. I think we all do that here. I embrace that. There’s a lot of lessons that I learned from the game the other day. We’ve got to make adjustments, and he’ll have to make some adjustments as he grows as well.”‘
Bills’ McDermott said starting Allen is what’s best for the team
‘Allen got his first taste of real NFL action against the Ravens and McDermott’s takeaway was, “I thought his command of the offense was there, there were some things he did well in getting us in and out of the huddle, which those are the things you don’t take for granted when a young player is out there and then after the snap, executed fairly well at times and then there was other times where we need to execute better, he moved well within the pocket and then outside of the pocket.”’
Bills sign OG Ike Boettger, release CB Ryan Lewis
‘Lewis was inactive for Week One’s loss against the Baltimore Ravens. Boettger’s addition makes him the 10th offensive lineman on the Bills 53-man roster. Boettger was with the Bills during the preseason, but released after the roster cutdowns on September 1st.’
Ready or not, it’s time to start Josh Allen
‘I think most people pegged McCarron as the bridge; someone who wouldn’t puke on himself (not literally) and serve as the bridge to Allen until he was ready to take over. But by allowing Peterman’s preseason performance to fool Sean McDermott and Brandon Beane into thinking this team didn’t need a veteran presence at the quarterback position, they eliminated any possibility for that to plan to work correctly.’
Bills release Washington, add Orchard
‘Adolphus Washington was a third round pick of the Bills in 2016 out of Ohio State. He started 21 games out of 30 in two seasons, recording 3.5 sacks and 36 tackles in that time. Washington was downgraded to fourth on the depth chart below Star Lotulelei, Kyle Williams, and 2018 third round pick Harrison Phillips.’
McDermott: “You cannot give up those points and win a football game”
‘”Overall, you cannot give up those points and win a football game. Tremaine [Edmunds] early in the game could have done a better job, but as the game went on he showed glimpses of serious promise. He started to look comfortable, and eventually forced that fumble.”‘
Williams: “We have to go through and try to correct the mistakes”
‘”Guys like Tremaine [Edmunds], Taron [Johnson] and Harrison [Phillips] need to be made aware that every detail is important. From there, you can do your respective job in a cleaner, faster manner.”‘
Bills torched by Ravens in season opener, 47-3
‘Allen ended his day by throwing 6-of-15 for 74 yards, but he was sacked three times for a loss of 16 yards.’
Worst opening day ever
‘We knew the Bills offense was loaded with questions and bereft of top end talent but woof! I didn’t expect to see, perhaps, the worst half of football I’ve witnessed from any Bills team in the nearly 30 years I’ve watched them. I still can’t believe they went an entire half without getting a single first down. It was the first time a Bills team managed to produce that dubious stat since 2001. They ran 23 plays over eight possessions and totaled just 33 yards.’
The Bills have never been worse on opening day
‘I’ve been watching the NFL for a long time and I have NEVER, EVER seen a quarterback pulled with five minutes gone in the third quarter because the game is already won. The Bills made Joe Flacco look like Tom Brady. They had no answer at all for the three Baltimore tight ends and receivers were open all day. Vontae Davis has been so bad he was inactive. His replacement Phillip Gaines was no better.’
Sal’s Sticks: Bills at Ravens
‘The concerns from the preseason have officially turned to worry. The line was overmatched all afternoon, allowing six sacks of Bills’ QBs Nathan Peterman and Josh Allen, numerous pressures when there wasn’t a sack, not giving any space for the running game, and committing several penalties. It was just a poor performance for the unit all around.’
