‘Davis quitting and retiring left the Bills in a precarious spot Sunday as they had only two healthy cornerbacks. McDermott said he and Brandon Beane will be discussing what they need to do to bulk up the position, but he did not get into specifics regarding how they would do it.’

‘Johnson’s status is up in the air, and the Bills would obviously be scared out of their minds to activate Wallace and/or Lewis, though they may not have a choice because of the slim pickings on the current free agent market.’

‘For most of the way the No. 7 overall draft pick did not look overwhelmed by the situation, but he made some glaring rookie mistakes in the second half and the Bills couldn’t overcome those because they simply don’t have enough talent around Allen to produce any offensive consistency.’

‘Davis signed with the Bills as a free agent in March after missing most of the 2017 season with a serious groin injury that required surgery. He was limited for much of the offseason program, and though his work picked up in training camp and the preseason, it was clear that he was struggling.’

‘Sure, they’ll win a few, but come the end of December, chances are they won’t have many, and all that draft talk might get very real. The Bills had a player quit at halftime, coach Sean McDermott took the defensive play-calling responsibilities away from Leslie Frazier, and they’ve now been outscored 78-23. As former Yankees manager Joe Girardi would say, it’s not what you want.’

‘But Allen also had five sacks and two costly interceptions, his second one on an underthrown pass to tight end Jason Croom that set up an easy field goal for the visitors in the fourth quarter and ended any chance of a storybook comeback.’

‘This was headed into pure ‘F’ territory at halftime when the Bills were down 28-6 and looking like they were going to get eviscerated the way they did in Baltimore. To their credit, even with a player quitting on them, they fought hard in the second half and actually made it a game early in the third quarter before fizzling out, unable to complete what would have been an epic comeback. The Bills are 0-2, and there is no evidence to suggest that they aren’t the worst team in the NFL.’

‘“He’s a rookie, so he’ll have his lumps, his bruises,’’ McCoy said. “It’s learning. Every team, every game, every stadium, it’s a new experience for him. As far as talent? I see his talent. He’s smart, his arm strength, he’s put together. If I had to draft a quarterback, I would draft a kid like him. I’m not big on rookies, but guys like him and (cornerback) Tre (White last year), they’re special, they’re different. This year, next year, you’ll see him coming together. It’s a scary sight for the defense.’’’

‘Neither Favre, Brees nor Brady started a single game as rookies. Not surprising because none was a first-round pick; Favre and Brees were second-rounders and Brady a sixth-rounder.’
