‘Newton won the 2015 NFL MVP award on Dorsey’s watch, and the Panthers won an NFC title.’
Rochester Democrat and Chronicle
He was the youngest player in the NFL, but Tremaine Edmunds excelled in Bills defense
‘It’s true that Edmunds had a topsy-turvy rookie season and there were certainly moments when he looked lost, but let’s also remember that the 6-foot-5, 250-pound freak of an athlete is the youngest drafted player in NFL history.’
Buffalo Bills in need of new quarterbacks coach as Ravens poach David Culley
‘Now, McDermott must find someone who can take over the huge job of guiding Allen, a raw talent who needs much refinement of his mechanics, especially his footwork.’
Josh Allen is resting, but he’s also ready to get back to work
‘“This year was definitely a learning experience,” Allen said. “There was a lot of good, some bad, but you get to learn from the bad and next year when we go into it we’ll try to make those positives. There was a lot of growth, and having Derek (Anderson) and Matt (Barkley) in helped me a tremendous amount. I’m super thankful to have those guys, and I’m excited to get back there and get back to work.”’
Buffalo Bills may have unearthed a gem in unheralded cornerback Levi Wallace
‘“He’s a player, a young man with good instincts, good football instincts,” McDermott said late in the season. “Levi can continue to grow and improve. That’s the mindset we all have to take; we’re not a finished product. We have to embrace that mindset of (knowing), I’m not where I need to be yet, but I’m going to get there if we continue to grow and continue to put in the hard work.”’
Roth: After crazy Championship Sunday, it’s time for NFL to tweak replay and overtime
‘Instead of celebrating two exciting title games that pitted the old (Drew Brees, Tom Brady) vs. the new (Jared Goff, Patrick Mahomes), fans, media, players, coaches and league officials are back debating two old issues: instant replay and overtime.’
Bills quarterback Josh Allen inspired by Patrick Mahomes’ early success with Chiefs
‘“Absolutely I do think it can happen,” said Allen, who played in 11 more games as a rookie than did Mahomes. “Kudos to him for having such a great season. He’s having a season that quarterbacks dream of. He’s a really good dude, an outstanding player and I’m really happy for him. I definitely think that it can be attained by a young quarterback and why not me? That’s what we all strive to do, to win games and have a fun time doing it. That’s something we’ll be chasing here, not the stats or the MVP or whatever, but winning football games and hosting the AFC Championship.”’
Shaq Lawson was improved in 2018, but should Bills invest a fifth year in him?
‘“We’ll go back and watch all of Shaq’s stuff,” Beane said. “His professionalism went leaps and bounds this year. He really worked hard, and I saw a guy putting the effort in not only on the field, but he brings juice and energy to our practice like I didn’t see a year ago. (Defensive line coach) Bill Teerlinck tells me he brings it to the meeting room, as well. I think we’ll continue to watch him, how he handles the off-season, how he comes back in here, but I’m happy for him and his success.”’
Buffalo Bills re-sign Lorenzo Alexander to contract extension
‘“At some point,” Alexander continued, “you have to walk away from the game and start the second half of your life. And for me, the end stage of my career, having a family that has been acclimated to this culture and been accepted after bouncing around a couple years, it just made sense for us to get something done early, know where we’re going to be at, know what our kids’ school is going to look like. All that stuff that gets overlooked in these negotiations.”’
NFL mock drafts: 7 players the Buffalo Bills could take in the first round
‘Yes, it is January and the NFL Draft is still three months away, but early versions of mock drafts are starting to pop up and have the Buffalo Bills looking at several positions — with defensive line, offensive line and wide receiver leading the way — with the ninth overall pick.’
Buffalo Bills hire Bobby Johnson as offensive line coach
‘Juan Castillo was fired last week following a season in which the Bills were inept up front, thanks mainly to the sudden retirements of Richie Incognito and Eric Wood. Players such as Vlad Ducasse, John Miller, Ryan Groy, Russell Bodine and Wyatt Teller could not play anywhere near the level of Wood and Incognito and the Bills struggled all year to run the ball, and protect their quarterbacks.’
Report: Bills hire former Panthers assistant coach Heath Farwell to lead special teams
‘The 37-year-old Farwell played linebacker at San Diego State in the early 2000s and then went on to a nine-year NFL career, playing 114 games for the Vikings and Seahawks almost exclusively on special teams. In a backup role on defense, he totaled 156 tackles and made four fumble recoveries.’
Promising rookie class could be group that puts winning foundation in place for Bills
‘“I’m really happy with the production that we’ve gotten out of the first- and second-year players,” Beane said late in the season, lumping in the 2017 draft which McDermott presided over that brought Tre’Davious White, Dion Dawkins, Matt Milano and Zay Jones. “We’ve got to continue, and it starts with adding another draft class. Drafting is number one here.”’
After a terrible season, what should the Buffalo Bills do with tight end Charles Clay?
‘Clay was undeniably one of the least productive players in the NFL in 2018 based on performance relative to salary, as he earned $9 million for his 21 receptions, 184 yards and no touchdowns. His play was so far below par, coach Sean McDermott deactivated him for the Dec. 23 game in New England and went with Jason Croom and Logan Thomas at tight end.’
Cut him or keep him: What should the Bills do with LeSean McCoy?
‘“He is part of our plan,” Beane said at his New Year’s Eve press conference. “I think if we can improve in other areas, that will help LeSean. Early in the year, our pass game was not very good. You could see it. Teams were focused on, ‘All right, if we stop 25, this team isn’t going to go far.’ While we did improve our pass game, our run game stayed stagnant for a lot of the year. Again, LeSean will come back in 2019 and we’ll go from there. I’m not a believer that LeSean is done.”’
