Two Bills Drive

'Well, you know you hope that the guys can stay healthy that are playing, but you always got to have a back-up plan if something were to happen and we get an injury, and I know that Sean [McDermott] and the rest of our scouting staff, with Brandon [Beane] and all, they’re taking a look and they’re just trying to make sure that we have the proper depth if we were to get injuries on Sunday so I think we’ll be alright, they understand the situation and we’ll work through it.'

'Webb has spent the past three seasons in Carolina after four years with Minnesota. He’s listed as a quarterback, but he’s been a jack of all trades in the NFL playing wide receiver, defensive back, and special teams.'

'The Taylor concussion situation remains cloudy, no pun intended, and it is further complicated by the fact that third-stringer T.J. Yates remains in concussion protocol as well. Thus, if Peterman starts, the Bills needed a backup and that man is going to be 30-year-old veteran Joe Webb who was signed Monday morning.'

'The Buffalo Bills made a surprising move in releasing second-year running back Jonathan Williams on Sunday afternoon. On Monday, no other NFL team claimed Williams and he is now a free agent, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.'

'In 38 coverage snaps, Gaines was targeted just five times this preseason, and it's easy to see why when looking at the results. He surrendered just one catch for six yards, while notching a pick and two break-ups. Quarterbacks had a rating of 0.0 when challenging his coverage in August.'

'"Just in observing him this morning in our meetings and our walk through, he's very engaged," Frazier said. "Really into it. I think he's looking forward to having a big week of practice and playing well for us on Sunday. All indications based on today's meetings and walk throughs were all positive. We've got a practice this afternoon and I'm sure he'll be engaged and ready to go as well."'

'"Resilience is important," McDermott. "Resiliency, grit, being adaptable. Sometimes a setback is a setup for a comeback. That's the name of the game in this business. We feel good that we'll have clarity around the situation when we needed. This team is ready. We've adjusted before and I expect that we'll adjust again."'

'"Well Jonathan, I thought he had a good preseason," McDermott said. "There's a lot to like about what he did. That said, we're doing what's right for this football team. I have a lot of confidence in the running backs behind LeSean in Mike Tolbert, Joe Banyard, Taiwan Jones. We feel good about those guys. There's also an element of special teams baked in here with those players. There's three phases to the football team as you've heard me say before. Having a balance in all three phases is important for us."'

'"I like Joe Webb," McDermott said. "My history with Joe, Brandon's history with Joe. He brings a lot to the table, just starting with the person that he is. He's a high energy guy, positive person. Good for our culture, good for our locker room. He plays special teams, he plays quarterback as you mentioned. He plays wide receiver, he plays DB. He's done it all. I've been around Joe for a couple years in Carolina there. We know what he brings to the table."'

'The study calculated the cost of tickets, beer, hot dogs, transportation and accommodations to find which fans would be paying the most money this season and the Bills finished as the sixth most expensive team to support.'

'“With any starter, it gets to the point of the week where you have to say, ‘we have to go one way or the other,’” McDermot said. “We’ll cross that road when we come to it at this point.”'

'“There’s also an element of special teams baked into this here with those players. There’s three phases to the football team, as you’ve heard me say before, and having a balance in all three phases is important for us,” McDermott said.'

'But the Panthers released Webb Saturday, later picking up former University of Miami quarterback Brad Kaaya off waivers to become their new third quarterback. The move was not greeted warmly in Carolina’s locker room, where Webb was noted for a popular figure due to his do-anything demeanor. He was the only quarterback in the NFL to regularly contribute on special teams as anything besides a holder.'

'Webb has been unique in the league as the only quarterback who plays on special teams. Webb played 16 snaps with the Carolina offense and was on the field for 260 special-teams plays last season.'

'"He is ready," McDermott said. "When you look at what he's done throughout the preseason, I'm confident, and we're extremely confident in Nathan. I expect that he's only going to continue to get better."'
