‘They gave us a chance’: McDermott says Bills defense kept team in it for bulk of loss

‘Though the Bills ultimately fell short, the defense kept the them in it for just about as long as possible, on a Monday night when the offense turned the ball over four times and was ineffective at other points. But Buffalo called timeout with 24 seconds left. Special teams coordinator Matthew Smiley should have made sure 11 men were on the field. And that mistake ultimately falls on McDermott.’

That’s absolutely inexcusable, but it is far from the only problem for the coaching staff. The bigger issue is what the offensive coaches have done to Allen. It is probably too late to make a difference and save the season, but if Sean McDermott wasn’t before, he absolutely has to be thinking about replacing offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey at this point.’

His offense is a disaster right now, and he did not have nearly enough answers against a Denver defense that, while not as bad as it was against Miami, certainly isn’t one of the league’s better groups. ‘“Guys are upset and they’re frustrated,” he said. “When you don’t get the results you’re looking for and you don’t have maybe the production you’re looking for, they get frustrated. And so I can promise you it’s not for a lack of effort. This is – we gotta continue to reset and continue to make the adjustments that we need to make. I know the result wasn’t what we wanted it to be, but I do think there was some good football at times being played. But not good enough. So obviously we have things to work on.”’
