‘“You want the truth? It was spiritual. It really was. Bone-chilling. It was special.” He added, “I can’t remember a play that touched me like that in my life.”’

‘Churchgoers and football fans communed with Hamlin in mind, as they have done for nearly a week in this distressed but tight-knit borough across the Ohio River from downtown Pittsburgh. They have cried for him, prayed for him and gained cautious hope, embracing a native son who made it to the N.F.L. with the Buffalo Bills and then kept extending his hand to others, leaving home but never losing his connection to the place where he grew up.’

‘On Big Tree Road, a central artery near the stadium, signs and placards paid tribute to Hamlin. One house displayed a giant, red 3 leaning against a flagpole (Stars and Stripes on top, Bills logo just beneath). Next door, a yellow heart with a blue 3 inside rested on the lawn. Across the street, a heart with a 3 inside was tucked inside the window of an RV. The 3 was everywhere: fastened with paper clips to jerseys, taped to the sides of cars, affixed to a handheld stick, carved out of wood, painted on faces.’

‘“OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!” Hamlin wrote on Twitter after Hines’ touchdown. “FREE HINES.”’

‘And oh what a powerful, emotionally charged day it was with love pouring out from all corners of Highmark Stadium and from every pore of every fan filling the furthest, highest, steepest corners of the old football yard.’

‘“We all won,” Hamlin tweeted while announcing the creation of the T-shirts. “I want to give back an ounce of the love y’all showed me. Proceeds of this shirt will go to first-responders and the UC Trauma Center. Go get yours!”’

‘Highmark Stadium was already an emotionally charged place, filled to capacity and electric because everyone was there to honor Hamlin, who remains in critical condition in a Cincinnati hospital. But when Hines busted that kickoff return, the place was off the rails.’

‘Highmark Stadium in Buffalo was filled with Bills faithful per usual, but it felt a little different as everyone continued to show their love and support to Hamlin and his family. Signs, jerseys and more showed Hamlin’s No. 3, while players all warmed up with “Love For Damar 3” T-shirts on.’

‘Bills trainer Denny Kellington administered CPR that night at Paycor Stadium in Cincinnati, playing a pivotal role in saving Hamlin, who remains at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.’
