4 Observations: Bills Training Camp (7/30)
‘Josh Allen fired up to end practice. The offense was working down near the goal line. The Bills QB ran the ball, Jordan Phillips gave him a decent bump, Allen tossed the ball down and shoved Phillips. The rest of the team separated the two players and things de-escalated pretty quickly (below). Sean McDermott decided he had seen enough and called it a day. After practice Mitch Morse was asked about the situation and said that’s what happens this time of year but they leave it on the field and it doesn’t carry over to the locker room.’
Jackson still fighting for spot he succeeded in last year
‘“You gotta have a routine,” Jackson said. “Coming from the practice squad, you don’t get that routine because you don’t really know if you’re going to be up (playing) or not. Just getting that routine going. The more games you play, you figure out your routine and it gets better every time.”’
Training camp heats up in Bills’ first day in pads
‘”We’ve already been here a whole week. Guys aren’t sleeping very well away from their families who put on pads. The anticipation behind pads can build up… It’s just a more physical game out there when the pads are on. So yeah, stuff like that, especially in the first day is going to happen. You know, it’s unfortunate at times, but at times, you worked through some stuff and come out as a better team on the other side.”‘
Bills linebacker Tyler Matakevich gaining thrill from charitable work with dogs
‘That all changed six years ago, when a friend’s family asked him to be a part of a photo shoot for “Show Your Soft Side,” a non-for profit supporting sheltered dogs and cats. It was something that Matakevich jumped at to be a part of.’
Bills sign cornerback Jordan Miller
‘The Bills released CB Travon Fuller with the waived/left squad designation.’
Top 3 things to know from Day 6 of 2022 Bills Training Camp
‘The uptick in energy was felt early on when wide receivers and tight ends went through blocking drills going up against defensive backs to create space on the outside for the Bills’ running backs. It was the first time going through the drill full-speed in training camp and players on both sides were able to go head-to-head.’
Matt Haack’s strong start shows Bills’ punter competition promises to go deep into summer
‘Incumbent Matt Haack has shown he’s not simply going to roll over and give up his job to rookie Matt Araiza, the “Punt God” drafted in the sixth round out of San Diego State. In fact, through the first two punting sessions, Haack has arguably had a slight edge in the competition.’
Camp observations: Bills’ backup O-linemen get trial by fire vs. defensive stars; Hyde injury update
‘Safety Micah Hyde was injured early in practice when he made a leaping interception of a Josh Allen pass over the middle and landed hard on the ground. The Bills reported it was an injury to the hip/glute area. Hyde walked off the field under his own power with a limp. Then he got into a cart and was driven the 200 or so yards to the locker room. Coach Sean McDermott is scheduled to speak with reporters Saturday morning.’
It’s Puntapalooza for the Bills at training camp. Who will win the roster spot?
‘But it’s not like Araiza was a high draft choice. He still has to prove he’s the better punter, and it isn’t always about leg strength and yardage as he’s quickly finding out, first in OTAs and now in training camp. It’s also about hang time, and directional kicking in order to control the opponents’ return game.’
Safety Micah Hyde carted off field with injury during Bills training camp
‘Hyde immediately took off his helmet and winced in pain as trainers and teammates huddled around him. He rolled around on the grass and shook out his right leg. After a minute or two he was able to stand up. He limped off of the field but needed a cart to go back into the facility.’
Bills’ Matt Araiza looking to prove people wrong after 2022 draft tumble
‘Araiza may have been discussed more than any other specialist in the draft class, but he saw punters Jordan Stout and Jake Camarda selected before him as well as kicker Cade York (Browns). Stout is the Ravens’ lone punter and Camarda essentially has the Tampa Bay job locked up.’
Von Miller toys with young and veteran o-linemen on day 5 of camp (Observations)
‘The Bills held their fifth practice of training camp at St. John Fisher University on Friday. Defensive end Von Miller was unblockable for the entirety of practice. It didn’t matter who the Bills tried against him, Miller just overwhelmed everybody he faced.’
Bills Camp: Star defensive player suffers injury on Day 5; McKenzie powers passing game
‘Upon Hyde hitting the deck, the practice stopped abruptly, with several players taking a knee and the Bills’ DJ cutting the music that had been blaring throughout the session. It was a scary moment, but after remaining down briefly, Hyde got to his feet and walked off under his own power, albeit with a noticeable limp. He then rode off the field in the passenger seat of a cart likely headed for the Bills’ training room. The Bills later announced that Hyde suffered a hip/glute that was still being evaluated.’
Sullivan: Isaiah McKenzie, little Bills WR with a big opportunity
‘“Trust me, I do get tired of it,” McKenzie said. “But at the same time, I know it’s not going to go away. I know each and every day, I’m going to have to come out on the field and I’m going to have to prove (GM Brandon) Beane wrong. I’m going to have to prove Coach (Sean) McDermott wrong. I might have to prove the media and the doubters wrong.”‘
