McDermott: Training camp at St. John Fisher possible, but a ‘heavy lift’

‘McDermott said WR Stefon Diggs and DT Star Lotulelei are not at the practices, which are optional. He also said they are in discussion with St. John Fisher College about holding training camp there, but many details still need to be sorted out and it could be a “heavy lift” to get set up in Rochester with COVID protocols still in place.’

‘“I’m not going to mix that with personal decisions or personal life part of it but it does impact our situation here when you look at it,” said McDermott. “We experienced it last year and you see it happening with other teams in other sports, so it is something we’re going to have to deal with at some point.”’

‘“I’m a fan of going away to camp. The protocols are the protocols. It changes the complexion. It changes the weight of the operation,” McDermott said. “We have great fans… not only in the Rochester area, but people who come from all over to visit us there. It’s a chance for us to connect with our fans. We certainly recognize that. We’re tying to do our darnedest to look at all the protocols and all the layers on this thing that it would take to pull it off.”’

‘”Unless you get the single shot, the other double shots, if you will, take some time,” McDermott said. “To go through the time until the second, until you’re fully vaccinated, so the time element comes into play a little bit right now and I think a little bit is maybe working against us. I don’t think the right word is to try and convince, I think the right word is to try and educate and build awareness and then let people decide.”‘

‘”We are looking into it,” McDermott said. “We did send staff members up there to explore because we do believe in going away, and we also have great fans, not only in Western New York but that Rochester area and guys that come from all over to visit us there. It’s a chance for us to connect with our fans. We certainly recognize that, so we’re trying to do our darndest to look at all the protocols and all the layers on this thing that it would take to pull it off up there.”‘

‘”I think it’s flowing freely with our captains, in particular this time of year,” McDermott said of the conversations surrounding coming to Buffalo for OTAs. “We went on several calls and we had good dialogue. There’s things that are important to bringing a team together and it’s hard to bring a team together when you’re physically not together.”‘

‘”Being able to hang out outside the facility with guys, and not have to social distance,” Allen added. “But again, we’re taking those precautions and masking up here. We want to be in the building. We want to be around each other. We want to be able to develop that camaraderie with the guys. We’re getting a taste of it, but again, we’re longing for that day.”‘
