‘Gaines provides depth at both outside cornerback and inside in the slot. He was working in on the second team during camp last year on the outside, opposite Kevin Johnson, who has since left the Bills for Cleveland. He can also play some nickel cornerback to help push Taron Johnson for that role, if he can stay healthy.’

‘Perhaps it was a coincidence, but the Bills played extremely well when Gaines was on the field in 2017. The team held an 8-3 record when he started across from then-rookie Tre’Davious White. The team would go 1-4 without him.’

The Bills do have some depth on their defensive line after adding Carolina’s Mario Addison and Vernon Butler, and Seattle Quinton Jefferson to replace Shaq Lawson (Miami) and Jordan Phillips (Arizona). But their top three edge rushers are over 30 and they need to get younger at the position.’
