‘The biggest is an offense that lacks explosiveness. The Bills had 268 yards in offense against the Redskins, their second lowest total of the season behind the 253 yards in last week’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. That was the main reason the Redskins, who fell to 1-8 and had rookie Dwayne Haskins making his first pro start at quarterback, managed to hang around far too long. It was a one-score game until Devin Singletary’s two-yard touchdown run with 2:21 left in the game.’

Adrian Peterson impressed by Bills rookie Devin Singletary: ‘Wow. Who is this kid?’
‘“I was like, ‘Wow. Who is this kid?’ ” Peterson said to The Buffalo News after the Bills defeated the Redskins, 24-9, Sunday at New Era Field. “Because I was figuring to see Frank in there a little bit more, and then this young kid comes in there like a firecracker. I’m just like, ‘Wheeeeeeeeeew. He’s running. That’s my style. That’s what I like.’ I know Frank loves it, too. He’s very impressive. He did some great things in the run game, in the pass game, picking up blocks. He was very impressive to watch today.”’
Defense toughens up enough to hold Washington run game at bay
‘“When you’ve got Adrian Peterson, I’d get him the ball that many times a game, too,” Bills safety Jordan Poyer said. “He runs as hard in person as when you watch on film. That was the first time I had ever played him. On the one play, he gashed up the middle and I’m coming out of the post and it’s just me and him. That’s a hard tackle to make. … Your eyes kind of get a little wide when you see him 10 yards away from you running like a horse downhill.”’
Bills defense keeps Washington’s epic TD drought alive
‘Washington has gone 13 straight quarters and 32 straight possessions without an offensive touchdown. It’s the longest such drought in the history of the franchise, which was founded 87 years ago.’
The O-line was haulin’ as Bills snapped their screen-passing slump
‘But the team worked on the screen game this week, and it paid off for a 49-yard gain against the Washington Redskins. That highlights this week’s plays that shaped the game.’
Josh Allen leads four scoring drives; Bills recover both of his fumbles
‘“There are still times where I myself have to make sure I’m still pushing our guys and make sure that we’re still striving to be the best that we can be,” Allen said, “and so at the end of the day we’re 6-2 and it feels good. But I think everybody’s got the same mindset right now that we’re still hungry, we still want to grow, we still want to learn to try to be the best team we can.”’
Devin Singletary saves rushing grade; pass defense enjoys strong day in win
‘Devin Singletary keeps it from being an F, but this was not a good day on the ground. How many times can a team make gaining a single yard look like the hardest thing to do in football? The Bills continue to count the ways.’
Another game, another struggle but the Bills defeat the Redskins 24-9
‘It was inexcusable for Buffalo to have allowed the Redskins, now 1-8 on the season, to be even remotely close in this game what with their rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins making his first NFL start; what with their only legitimate offensive threat being a 34-year-old running back, even though Adrian Peterson will be a first-ballot Hall of Famer.’
Maiorana: If Buffalo Bills don’t improve they’re in trouble against legitimate competition
‘And from what I can see, there’s still a lot of work that needs to be done because if this season is about not only making it to the playoffs but actually winning a game or two in January, it’s awfully difficult to imagine that happening if they keep underwhelming like they have.’
Stepping on field with 2 Hall of Famers, Devin Singletary showed moment wasn’t too big
‘“A little bit,’’ said Singletary when asked if were able to digest the significance of the moment. “They were definitely giving me motivation, for them to be playing the game this deep into their careers, I was just trying to go out there and compete with them.’’’
Report card: Bills have mastered the art of winning ugly, which is better than losing ugly
‘It was a bit maddening to see the Bills screw up a great chance to take a 14-0 lead. They were first-and-goal at the 2 late in the first quarter and offensive coordinator Brian Daboll got way too cute and came up with three knuckle-headed play calls that resulted in a combined minus-22 yards. It was a complete over-think on his part that, against a good team, might have proven costly. Then in the second quarter, three straight runs by Frank Gore at the goal line failed before Allen sneaked the ball across. Another give to Gore blew up on fourth-and-1 in the third quarter. Yet again, the third quarter was a mess, too. On defense, kudos to whatever McDermott and defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier said at halftime because the run defense flipped a switch and was much better after a horrible start. Also, the decision to have White cover McLaurin no matter where he lined up was a sound one.’
Singletary, Bills run past Washington, 24-9
‘The Bills won the last of a three-game homestand because, 1. They unleashed rookie running back Devin Singletary and 2. They figured how to slow the Redskins running attack to a walk.’
Let’s look at Bills’ 6-2 mark for what it is
‘However, the reality remains that the opposition Buffalo has beaten at the halfway pole is a collective 9-41. That’s a .220 winning percentage if you check the arithmetic.’
Bills improve to 6-2, off to best start since 1993
‘The win improved Buffalo’s record to 6-2 at the season’s halfway point, the best start since the 1993 team opened 7-1.’
Devin Singletary breaks out, but Buffalo Bills offense lacks luster vs. Washington: 5 instant observations
‘But then the offense came to a screeching halt and didn’t score a point in the third quarter and then for most of the fourth. Luckily Washington quarterback Dwayne Haskins showed his lack of readiness and inability to move the ball through the air. The Bills gave up some big plays on the ground again this week but were able to hold Washington to field goals en route to a 24-9 victory.’
