‘“I think Kelvin didn’t know what he was supposed to do. Not that he didn’t know the plays or any of that, I think he just didn’t know what role they wanted him to fill,” said Steve Tasker, a former Bills receiver and current co-host of the team’s daily radio show. “He wasn’t familiar with what this offense was going to be. It was hard for him to fit in and feel comfortable out there knowing exactly what they wanted him to do. Four different quarterbacks, it’s pretty tough to be good when it’s that much of a carousel back there.”’

Pregame primer: 5 things to watch when Bills host Lions
‘Is Josh Allen’s running sustainable? The temptation is to say no … but that was true last week, too. The Jets knew what kind of threat Allen was on the ground, and he still found a way to top 100 yards. Coach Sean McDermott acknowledged that it’s not ideal for Allen to be the team’s leading rusher every week. He’s taking far more hits than the team would like. The rest of the running game is really struggling, though, which puts even more importance on Allen’s running. Expect the Lions to try to keep Allen in the pocket and make him prove he can beat them with his arm.’
Bills-Lions Scouting Report: Buffalo’s running backs have to get going
‘Bills 21, Lions 17.’
Play to Watch: Lions’ Kenny Golladay on the boundary
‘The Lions got Golladay matched up on safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix in a Week 5 game against Green Bay. The Packers rushed five, and Golladay used his vertical ability to turn it into a 60-yard play.’
One-on-One Coverage: Micah Hyde struggles with reality of missing playoffs for first time in six seasons
‘It’s difficult, it’s difficult. I can go back to the last five years I’ve been in the league, and a few of the years we just barely got in. Obviously, last year was the craziest just because we needed somebody else (the Cincinnati Bengals) to win and in years past (with the Packers), we had to win the last game to get in. Guys go their whole careers without making the playoffs. Luckily, (13th-year defensive tackle) Kyle (Williams) last year was a guy that was able to get in. It’s just a different feeling (not to make it). But once you get in, you feel like you have a shot at winning the championship. You just need to get in. Last year we did that, and we’re trying to get back to that point.’
Bills Mailbag: How much has Derek Anderson’s presence helped Josh Allen?
‘The best answer I can give is “a lot.” Here’s what Allen had to say about it Wednesday: “I definitely think we were a different team before Derek got here. The presence that he’s had in our locker room and on our offense has been tremendous. Then, Matt comes in, he’s kind of the same way. They just know how to be professional quarterbacks, and for me to see that, that was huge.”’
Voice of the Fan: Trying to make sense of a baffling season
‘One would be hard-pressed to name one truly great catch a Bills receiver has made this entire season. Good if not very good ones, sure. A handful. But a “great” one? Name it.’
McDermott: ‘There’s a bigger purpose’ for the Bills beyond winning these final games
‘“We’ve eliminated ourselves from the playoffs, but there’s a bigger purpose,” said coach Sean McDermott when asked what his team has left to play for. “The bigger purpose is how we develop into that team that we’re trying to become. I’m really looking at the quality of our play and how we develop. Certainly, we want to win games, don’t get me wrong. We’re trying to sustain success over the course of time. That’s what we want to do, that’s how you win a world championship. In order to get there, though, there’s evaluating our roster, knowing who we like, who can help us moving forward and who may not have taken advantage of the opportunity, quite frankly.”’
Little to play for in Lions/Bills
‘But, offensive struggles aside, Buffalo’s real problem has been poor play on the part of the special teams in the consecutive losses to the Dolphins and Jets.’

Joe B: 5 things to watch for in Buffalo Bills vs. Detroit Lions (12/16/18)
‘Above all else, the upcoming Bills-Lions matchup is a swing game for draft order angling. If the Bills lose, with a game against the New England Patriots on the docket, that will lock them into 11 losses at least, which in this year’s standings would be a pretty solid bet to be drafting either in or very close to the Top Five. If the Bills win, it puts a six-win season on the table for them, which would most likely drop them into the bottom part of the Top 10, or quite possibly out of it all together.’
