‘Here’s what I think happened: The team made the decision to move on from Tyrod Taylor as quarterback at the same time they were preparing to eat more than $50 million in dead money against the salary cap. That meant they didn’t have the money to pursue a veteran quarterback capable of serving as a bridge starter and mentor to Josh Allen — someone like Josh McCown or Sam Bradford (who ended up being a disaster for the Cardinals). That meant taking a chance on AJ McCarron. It’s my opinion the Bills screwed up in trading McCarron to Oakland. The Bills should have waited to see if the decision to go with Nathan Peterman as the starter worked out. As we are all painfully aware, it didn’t.’

One-on-One Coverage: WNY’s Ron Jaworski ‘disappointed’ he never got to play for the Bills
‘“Make no mistake about it, I was disappointed when I was not drafted by the Bills,” Jaworski, 67, said. “In fact, a little bit later they drafted Joe Ferguson. Although I was tremendously excited to go to the Rams, I did want to play for my hometown team.”’

Bills vs. Jets: How to watch, listen, plus things to know before Week 10 kickoff
‘This is the 115th time the teams have met, with Buffalo holding a 61-54 lead. Last season, Buffalo defeated New York, 21-12, at home on opening day in head coach Sean McDermott’s coaching debut, before losing to the Jets, 34-21, on the road in a Thursday night game. Buffalo has lost three of its last four games against New York.’
Barkley up next for Bills
‘That Barkley is the more likely starter with less than two weeks preparation speaks to how far Peterman, who has three touchdown passes and 12 interceptions in eight regular-season games for Buffalo, has fallen on the depth chart.’
Pollock: At 2-7, what will be Bills’ motivation?
‘When general manager Brandon Beane finally did what he should have done before the roster cut to 53, veteran Derek Anderson’s signing came too late for him to replace Allen, who injured his throwing elbow at Houston. In came Peterman, again the lone remaining QB, and, after throwing a pretty touchdown pass to put Buffalo ahead, tossed a late pick-six that gave the Texans the game.’
Matt Barkley to start for Buffalo Bills vs. New York Jets
‘In addition to announcing Barkley as the team’s starter, the Bills also announced that linebacker Tremaine Edmunds had cleared the concussion protocol and was expected to play versus the Jets. Edmunds suffered the concussion on Monday Night Football against the New England Patriots and missed the team’s Week 9 matchup against the Chicago Bears.’

Bills say QB Matt Barkley expected to start against Jets
‘Barkley is on his sixth team in six seasons, and has a 1-5 career record as a starter, all with the Bears in 2016. He was cut by Cincinnati in September after hurting his knee in a preseason game.’
Bills name QB Barkley starter versus Jets
‘Barkley, who starred at USC, was a fourth-round pick by Philadelphia in the 2013 draft. He appeared in four games with the Eagles. He didn’t play while with Arizona in 2015 and 2017 and appeared in seven games (six starts) with Chicago in 2016, last starting a game in that season’s finale.’
Bills to start Matt Barkley at QB over Nathan Peterman vs. Jets
‘Barkley was announced Saturday as the Bills’ starter after the team ruled out rookie first-round quarterback Josh Allen, who will miss his fourth consecutive game because of an elbow injury. The Bills previously ruled out veteran Derek Anderson because of a concussion.’
Matt Barkley to become second QB to start a game within two weeks of signing with Bills in 2018
‘The Jets aren’t exactly in great shape either. New York will be starting Josh McCown after rookie Sam Darnold suffered a foot sprain that could sideline him for several weeks.’
Bills name Matt Barkley as starting QB vs. Jets
‘Barkley, who signed a one-year deal with the Bills Oct. 31, last played in 2016 for the Bears, who finished that season with the worst record (3-13) for the team since the NFL’s move to 16-game seasons in 1978. Before finishing out that year for Chicago, Barkley spent two seasons in Philadelphia, where he played in a total of four games as the Eagles’ backup.’
