‘“You always want to outwork everyone and do the most, and sometimes when you’re dealing with things like this, that’s not the right approach,” Murphy said. “It’s been solid, just day by day really. Just taking what they give me. They’ve put together a great training staff here, so I try to listen and not step out of bounds and do too much. I have to trust the process because I’m always trying to rush and rush and rush and do too much. That’s been the biggest coaching point is, ‘do what they tell you, trust the process, and you’ll be there when we need you.’ ”’

‘“Some of the things that he brings here is that kind of culture, that attitude and then the smarts, making guys accountable,” McCoy said. “I think so, honestly. When he first got here just talking to him and seeing how he thinks — I’ve been around some smart coaches offensively and the way they scheme things up, the way they want to find mismatches and take advantage of it — it’s not so simple. It’s an offense that you have to think a little bit. … I think the special coordinators are the coaches that can put you in plays to be successful as far as not running the play in to a bad look.”’

‘Remember the season opener in Baltimore two years ago. The Bills lost, 13-7, and were held to 11 first downs. McCoy managed 2.7 yards a carry.’

‘It’s hard to find an area in this game where the Bills have an edge.’

‘I think it’s important for the quarterback that’s playing that he has a firm grasp, that he really has a comfort level with the plays that we’re running, particularly early in the season when [there is not a lot of tape]. There are preseason games to evaluate, but at the end of the day, it’s about, and I’ve talked about this before, the fundamentals and properly executing based on rules. At the end of the day, you’re not really sure early in the season what you’re going to get from the opponents.’
