‘McCarron was tabbed as the starter in the Bills’ second preseason game, but struggled to move the chains with the first team offense. He finished 3-for-6 with 12 passing yards and failed to lead Buffalo to a first down, going 3-and-out in all four of the series he played before rookie Josh Allen entered in the second quarter.’

McDermott: It’s not clear when AJ McCarron will return to play
‘“We’re just going with the rotation at this point. We’ll make that decision. After today, we’ll start to move into a little bit of a blend of [this being] a normal week as we prepare. Our players can get acclimated to the routine of a normal, regular season week.”’
Josh Allen to start Bills 3rd preseason game
‘Allen has completed 56 percent of his passes this preseason along with two touchdowns.’
Allen to work with starters
‘Sean McDermott said the rookie quarterback is in a rotation with Nate Peterman for first team snaps. Peterman is working the second team on Monday.’
Bills trying to make sense of helmet rule
‘”You miss a tackle because you’re worried about how you’re going to hit (a player) versus just going to make a play because you don’t want to get a 15 yard penalty,” Lorenzo Alexander said. “I know my wife doesn’t want to see 26-grand come out of my check. And you just don’t want to hurt your team.”‘
Josh Allen named starter for Bills third preseason game
‘“So far overall, I would say he’s been pretty steady,” said McDermott of Allen after the Browns game this past Friday. “That’s a great quality. Mentally he’s pretty steady. I think the guys appreciate that for a rookie to have that quality is important. The mental toughness element if you will that’s so important to manage the highs and lows of the NFL.”’
Quick Hits: Josh Allen working with the starters on Monday
‘“(Josh) will be working with the ones and Nate will be working with the twos today,” said McDermott. “We’re staying with the rotation. Nate had the reps with the ones yesterday. Josh will have them today. After today we’ll start to move into a blend into a normal week as we prepare for the next game. Part of that is so our players can get acclimated to the routine of a normal regular season week.”’
Bills Today: Phillips on Williams injury; increased role
‘“I am anxious and eager any time I have the opportunity to go out and play the game,” said Phillips. “I want to do anything I can do to contribute to my team. If that’s with the ones or with the threes, I am here to perfect my craft and help the team win.”’
With Williams ‘week-to-week,’ Bills try to cope without their leader
‘With Williams sidelined indefinitely, the Bills will turn to Phillips and Washington to pick up the slack. They also added to their depth at the position Sunday by re-signing defensive tackle Tenny Palepoi, who fills the roster spot vacated after punter Cory Carter, who tore his ACL Friday night, was designated as waived/injured.’
Bills, McCarron seeking second opinion after inconclusive tests
‘”We had some tests yesterday. We’re going to do some more,” McDermott said. “We’re in the process of seeking a second opinion. We have no further updates at this point.”‘
Bills defenders upset with Landry’s crackback block on Taron Johnson
‘Landry caught the unexpecting Johnson focusing on the Browns running back, who had just received the handoff, when he flew in from his outside position to lay down a devastating crackback block. The block paid off, as Carlos Hyde ran into the end zone for the Browns’ first points of the game.’
What He Said: Sean McDermott breaks down Bills injuries, QB competition
‘I thought he did a good job. There were some plays that he wants back. As a team, there’s some things, Josh included in that, that we have to improve on. Plenty of work to do there, but really, I thought he moved the ball and generated points in all three drives there, which was good to see. [He] did some good things. Each opportunity for Josh is a learning experience because he’s young, but I thought, for the most part, he had good command of the offense, of the huddle. We did have to take a timeout there, which is not ideal; we like to save those. But overall, I thought he took what the defense gave him and played smart football.’
Matt Milano looking to build on a promising rookie season with Buffalo Bills
‘“Matt was slowed a little bit with a hamstring, but even how he handled that (by) sticking around Buffalo during the break to get himself right and ready to go for training camp was a big sign, I thought, of maturity,” said coach Sean McDermott. “He’s very serious about his job and what we’re trying to do as a football team, so I certainly appreciate that.”’
Sean McDermott noncommittal on severity of A.J. McCarron’s injury
‘When asked what McCarron missing time means in his quest to win the starting job over Nathan Peterman and Josh Allen, McDermott said, “Let’s take his health status, number one, and then factor that into (the fact that) we just have to get into this next stage one day at a time here and then we’ll go from there. We’ll see. If healthy, then we pick up where we left off.”’
Buffalo Bills rookie Tremaine Edmunds learns from mistakes, impresses teammates
‘”You’re gonna have bad plays. I don’t care if you’re Luke Kuechly or some no-name guy that’s trying to make the roster,” Alexander said. “Everybody’s gonna have some missed (plays), bad eyes, bad steps at some point. Obviously the great ones minimize those mistakes, and a guy like Tremaine is going to continue to get better.”‘
