‘It’s unacceptable’: McDermott fed up with Bills’ penalty problem

‘“It’s unacceptable,” coach Sean McDermott said. “The only word for it is unacceptable. You can’t do that and expect to stay on schedule and move the football, in particular, against good defenses. Cincinnati, (Sunday’s) example, was a good defense. We have to stop hurting ourselves. Before you win, you have to prevent yourself from losing. Pre-snap penalties or penalties overall don’t allow you to play on-schedule football offensively.”’

5 things to watch in Bills-Bears: Does it make sense to play Peterman or Allen?

‘One has to believe Sean McDermott already has made up his mind on the quarterback decision between Nathan Peterman and Josh Allen for Week 1. Ditto for Ryan Groy vs. Russell Bodine at center. Even though the Bills’ offense could use a feel-good, bounce-back showing after the loss to Cincinnati, it’s not going to mean anything against the Bears’ scrubs playing vanilla schemes. Coaches generally want to protect their preferred starter from injury exposure. So if Allen or Peterman sit out while the other plays a ton, that will be telling. Ditto at center, where it appears Groy has the edge (since he started preseason Weeks 1 and 3).’

‘Logically, that should mean Peterman gets the call against the Ravens, Allen serves as the starter in waiting, and for McCarron, I really don’t know what to make of his situation. He did not sign with Buffalo to be a third-string clipboard carrier, he’s clearly unhappy with how things have played out, and you have to wonder if the Bills might just cut him, or try to trade him (highly unlikely).’

‘One young player who impressed in camp was versatile 26-year-old Marcus Murphy, who the Bills believe could play a Darren Sproles-type role (not to say he’s Sproles) in the offense. What I love about him is how he first came on Beane’s radar–as a Saints rookie in 2015, he returned a punt for a touchdown against a Panthers team that Beane was working for. The Bills GM kept an eye on him and last November scooped him up and put him on the team’s practice squad. McDermott promoted him to the active roster before the team’s final regular-season game, and now he’s positioned for a nice role behind Shady McCoy.’

‘There are only five draft picks left—five!—that predate McDermott, and only one of those was taken in the first round (Shaq Lawson). Of course, you strike out enough in the draft, and you have to spend elsewhere. The Bills did, which is they’re carrying more than $46 million in dead money on the 2018 cap. In fact, three of the four biggest cap numbers on the ledger are attached to players no longer on the team.’
