5 Reasons Tyrod Taylor could be the Bills’ starting quarterback in 2018
‘Reasonable deal: Taylor’s contract is pretty team-friendly. First and foremost, it’s already signed. If the Bills want him, the Bills have him. The team can start planning for next season right now. If that’s not the case, the team’s route will either be the draft or free agency, which can be unpredictable. Beyond his signature, Taylor is only slated to have a salary cap hit of approximately $18 million next season. According to Spotrac, that figure is the 16th-highest among QBs in the NFL. Of those behind him in the top-32 of that category, only Alex Smith ($17 million) and Andy Dalton ($16.3) have smaller cap hits who are presumed starters and not on their rookie deals. In addition, if Buffalo stays with Taylor, the team will avoid adding an approximate $8.6 million dead cap hit for 2018 and his deal will expire the following year.’
PFF slates Bills’ WR Zay Jones as a candidate to “bounce back” in second season
‘After both Sammy Watkins and Robert Woods walked out the door last offseason, in one way or another to Los Angeles, it became more clear that Zay Jones was in for a high-volume role at receiver in Buffalo. Year 1 certainly didn’t go as planned as Jones finished the season ranked 108th out of 116 qualified wide receivers in terms of overall grade and Bills’ quarterbacks had just a 60.8 passer rating when targeting him. Jones should fare better in Year 2 if he can rectify the drop issue that snuck up on him as a rookie. Jones dropped 5-of-32 catchable targets this past season, one year after he dropped just 6-of-164 catchable targets in his final campaign at ECU.’
Inside the Bills: The top 10 positional needs in free agency
‘While a compelling case can be made for nearly any position on the roster, here is my list of the top 10 positional needs for the Bills heading into free agency, along with a sampling of the players scheduled to hit the open market a little less than a month from now…’.

Buffalo Bills calling around, pursuing potential trade partners in 2018 draft top 10 (report)
‘As Allbright noted, the move would presumably be for a quarterback. Buffalo currently has Tyrod Taylor and Nathan Peterman under contract, but the team may move on from their former starter. Taylor is owed a $6 million roster bonus if he’s still a member of the Bills on March 16. Even if Taylor stays, his contract runs out after the 2018 season. Buffalo needs to start thinking about their future and it’s clear that the team doesn’t feel that they have a franchise quarterback on their roster. The Bills could pursue a quarterback in free agency, but there could be a bidding war between QB needy teams for the likes of Kirk Cousins, Case Keenum, Teddy Bridgewater, Sam Bradford and A.J. McCarron.’
7 reasons Tyrod Taylor will be the Buffalo Bills’ starting quarterback in 2018
‘Taylor will carry an $18 million cap hit in 2018 if the Bills keep him on their roster. It seems like a steep price, but it could be a steal based on what other teams will be paying in free agency. Kirk Cousins seems destined to get a Jimmy Garoppolo type of deal while Case Keenum, A.J. McCarron, Teddy Bridgewater and Sam Bradford will all have suitors throwing money their way. Keeping Taylor may be a better option than getting into a bidding war for quarterbacks that aren’t franchise options.’
Report: Bills seeking trade partners to move up in 2018 draft
‘In terms of which quarterback Buffalo would like, Allbright hinted at two names: UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen and Wyoming’s Josh Allen. Most draft “experts” have mocked Rosen going first or second overall. The Cleveland Browns and New York Giants own those two picks, respectively. Allen is mocked all over the first round.’
The road map to an NFL draft trade up
‘It’s not as much a mystery as the NFL Draft’s “crapshoot” stereotype.’
Vontae Davis leaves Bills without a deal, reportedly visiting Cleveland
‘Davis is free to sign before the official start of free agency next month because he was released by the Colts in November. The Bills potentially have a big need at cornerback with E.J. Gaines, Leonard Johnson and Shareece Wright all scheduled to become free agents.’
Analysis: AJ McCarron ruling is good news for Bills
‘With McCarron free to test the open market next month, it’s possible a team ahead of the Bills in the draft order will convince themselves he can be their long-term answer at quarterback, thus leading them to pass over the position in the draft. Doing so would be one less team for the Bills to compete with.’
Michigan’s Maurice Hurst would be uber fit for Bills’ D-line
‘”In today’s NFL, you’ve got to get after the quarterback and be disruptive,” said ESPN analyst Mel Kiper on a national conference call. “That’s what Maurice Hurst is. For Buffalo, you don’t have Marcell Dareus anymore. Kyle Williams is a free agent. So you look at it, and that’s a need area for the Buffalo Bills.”‘
NFL needs to blow up its rule book; here’s where it should start
‘If I was on the competition committee, there are several ideas I would suggest. Naturally, No. 1 on my list, and I’m sure everyone’s list, is blowing up the catch rule and starting from scratch. Fixing this atrocity must be the most pertinent goal of the owners this year.’
Buffalo Bills ranked next to last to forever end their Super Bowl drought by NFL.com
‘Other teams ranked above Buffalo included the Carolina Panthers, Los Angeles Chargers, Detroit Lions, Tennessee Titans, Cincinnati Bengals and Arizona Cardinals. The only team to be listed beneath Buffalo on Hanzus’ list was the Cleveland Browns.’
5 reasons Nathan Peterman could be the Bills starting QB in 2018
‘Chemistry: When Peterman wasn’t throwing interceptions in 2017, it wasn’t all bad. On multiple occasions, Peterman hit receivers in stride and completed timing passes. That was a big knock against Taylor. It’s tough to judge Peterman from his second-career start, a blizzard against the Colts, but Peterman tossed a few nice passes to Kelvin Benjamin, including Benjamin’s first touchdown with the Bills. Perhaps a Peterman-Benjamin spark could be something McDermott is intrigued by. Comparatively to a new quarterback, Peterman would also have a slight edge with his overall chemistry with all of Buffao’s receivers. That is, depending on which receivers return.’
