‘As you point out, Joe, there are other “major needs.” There are actually a lot of them, and I don’t believe that they can all be sufficiently addressed via the draft. If you tie up a whole lot of cap space at quarterback, it ultimately will limit your ability to build/rebuild elsewhere in free agency.’

Voice of the Fan: Trust the progress
‘The true heroism of the McDermott/Beane combo platter, however, is in the degree of genuine hope versus generic hype that they have instilled into the fan base; by accomplishment versus manufacturing. The team doesn’t need to craft hope for the 2018 season out of whole jersey and promotional campaigns; it should evolve organically out of an enjoyable winning season and the sweet taste of the playoffs in their first year.’
Weak passing game, decline in rushing success keyed miserable offensive year for Bills
‘Since the start of the 21st century, the Bills have finished in the top 10 in the NFL in points scored just twice (seventh in 2004, 10th in 2016), and they have placed in the top 10 in total yards just once (ninth in 2000).’
Bills’ decent performance on defense belied the ugly rankings
‘It will be ignored because the Bills finished 9-7 and ended their playoff drought, but McDermott and coordinator Leslie Frazier’s first Buffalo defense was statistically worse across the board than either of Ryan’s units. In 2017, the Bills’ defense ranked 26th in yards allowed, 29th in rushing yards allowed, 20th in passing yards, 30th in first downs allowed, and 31st in sacks per attempt.’
Buffalo Bills offseason 2018: Who should stay and who should go?
‘”No matter what our record was, whether we won the Super Bowl or whether we didn’t win a game, was we know we have to get younger in a lot of positions,” Beane said this week. “Again, it takes time, but we’re going to look at every avenue from the draft to free agency to guys on the street. We’re going to do what we can to get better at each position.”‘
Poyer ranked PFF’s top safety of Wild Card weekend; Poyer sends message of “motivation”
‘While the PFF news won’t replace the Pro Bowl snub, it probably felt like a little reassurance for Poyer.’
Football Friday: 5 thoughts on the Buffalo Bills
‘By all accounts, quarterback Nathan Peterman is a pretty good dude. But I’m a little worried about him going forward. Is the NFL spotlight too bright for him? In his first game, in case you forgot, he threw five interceptions. But in his couple of snaps in Jacksonville, he showed some similar signs. He appeared to panic a bit and make mistakes. On his first snap vs. Jacksonville, he scrambled and got a first down in a tough situation, but did lose the ball. Then he had an intentional ground call which was, possibly a little questionable, but it was still called. Then there was his interception which, while possibly a pass interference by Jalen Ramsey, was still picked off. Deserving of another chance, but a little more nervous than prior.’
Bills Fans’ Generosity: Meet the Families Being Helped by Donations to Andy Dalton’s Foundation
‘Dusty Stanfield, Dalton’s marketing representative, had a feeling his client’s popularity would soar after that touchdown pass, especially knowing the intensity of Bills supporters. Stanfield sent Dalton a text a few minutes after the game. I think you just earned yourself a brand new fan base.’
Beane: ‘We’re still in the process’ of finding a franchise quarterback
‘”It’s a quarterback league, and until you know you have the guy that you’re definitely going to build this team around and the offense around, you’re constantly searching,” Beane said with Howard Simon and Jeremy White on WGR Wednesday morning. “The teams that makes the runs in the playoffs consistently have a franchise guy that they lean on year in and year out. We’re still in the process of getting that accomplished.”‘
Bills Life: T2 and Shady watch ball in the 6
‘What better way to start the offseason than watching sports. Though it wasn’t football, Buffalo’s very own quarterback Tyrod Taylorand running back LeSean McCoy made a quick trip across the border to watch the Toronto Raptors taken on the Miami Heat basketball game on Tuesday, Jan 9. Lucky for them, the Raptors welcomed them with open arms and even gave them the custom jerseys! The duo wasn’t alone, their teammate running back Taiwan Jones joined the fun!’
McDermott effectively sets the standard
‘“Since day one when I got here he’s been talking about playoff caliber, and we made it to the playoffs,” said Leonard Johnson of coach McDermott. “Then we were in the playoffs and we were talking about championship caliber. We fell short of that, but just to see how far we made it when a lot of things were said when we made transactions and letting this guy walk and that person. But we as a team felt like we were better than what a lot of people gave us credit for.”’
Bills Today: Wood sees need for improvement on offense
‘“We have to be better next year on offense. We know that,” said Wood. “Our defense played great this year. They kept us in a lot of games, kept games tight, we were able to put up enough points to get nine wins and get into the playoffs, but ultimately it came back to haunt us on Sunday.”’
