‘They got us on the screens and that’s just a manner of good call by them, a defense that we were playing something different then, defending over things and they caught us. That’s the bottom-line on that one.’

‘It’s a great job by the coaching staff, Coach (Nathaniel) Hackett calling up plays, the offensive line protecting, and the running backs did a great job running the ball and obviously the receivers and the tight ends so it was a team effort. ‘”That’s one thing where Doug (Marrone) has been a real valuable resource for me as far as breaking down a team’s protection,” Pettine said. “That’s one thing in my last three years, really since 2010, that I’ve put a lot of work into as far as talking to offensive coaches, studying protection rules, trying to get a feel for what teams are doing out of certain formations.”‘

‘There’s no reason for the Bills to fear Dalton, who has been criticized for failing to lift his performance in the playoffs. The Bengals have scored one TD in their last two games and are winless in two games on the road. Dalton’s passing numbers are similar to Manuel’s this season.’

‘”In my boss’ viewpoint, Mike Brown, we’re going to build the football team through the draft, and it’s really a viewpoint that we both share,” Lewis said this week on a conference call with Buffalo reporters. “My time in the NFL has been spent on teams that do it that way – Pittsburgh and Baltimore and here predominantly. … It’s the way I’m comfortable doing it. I love watching tape of players and evaluating players. That’s the fun part of it.”‘

‘”I’ve done it before,” Lewis said, referring to his one NFL game, a start for Cleveland in the 2012 season finale when he completed 22 of 32 passes for 204 yards with a TD and a pick in a 24-10 loss to the Steelers. “I’m still playing football; it’s not like anything changed. I’m doing the same thing I was doing; I am just able to play this Sunday.”‘

‘This game could be a lot closer than most give it credit for because of the way the Bills have been playing defensively, but the interior defensive line and the offensive playmakers of Cincinnati make it a little bit too daunting for the Bills to overcome with Thad Lewis at the controls. Expect A.J. Green, as he should be each and every week, to be the focal point of Cincinnati’s offense. Keep an eye on Giovani Bernard, an emerging and slippery pass-catching running back that has been getting more and more involved as the season has gone alone. This will be tight to start, but eventually the Bengals may just wear out the Bills.’
