‘That’s not an obscene ranking, but the Bills have shown a propensity for getting flagged often and at crucial times, and 17 accepted penalties every two weeks would approach the Bills’ record for a season.’

Manuel faces first road test
‘Bills fans would love to see Manuel separate himself from his immediate predecessor, Ryan Fitzpatrick, who was routinely stifled by Rex Ryan’s aggressive, man-to-man pass defense. Fitz completed 50.2 percent of his throws and averaged 174 yards passing in seven games against the Jets.’
Manuel is likely to get a look at a lot of Jets in today’s game
‘Bills 20, Jets 18.’
Three … and Out
‘Bills 16, Jets 10.’
Bills, Jets aren’t focused on rookie QBs
‘”I’m not really focused on facing Geno,” said Manuel during a news conference earlier in the week. “He’s not on defense, so we’re just looking forward to the next game and trying to get another win.”‘
Plenty of storylines for Bills-Jets
‘”Having competed against him in college and then working him out and spending some time with him, I had a great appreciation … what was asked of him, what he did and what he had to do,” Marrone said of Smith. “When I look at him now, I see a player that’s developing. I’ve said before, we made a decision to go with EJ , we thought that was best for our organization. But I thought there were quarterbacks out there that will win in this league. Geno is developing and doing a nice job there.”‘
Pettine with chance to step out of Ryan’s shadow
‘ “I’d be a liar if I stood here and said this game didn’t mean more to me or I didn’t want to win it,” Pettine admitted. “Coaches in the NFL were born with a hyper competitive gene and you want to win at everything. I want to beat him on Sunday.”‘
Bills’ Pettine wasn’t nudged to leave Jets
‘”It looks like somebody borrowed our playbook,” Ryan said of watching film on Buffalo. “But you know what, that’s my defense, that’s his defense and certainly we were together for a long time. Mike’s somebody that I’m extremely proud of.”‘
Could be a long Sunday for Bills’ EJ Manuel against N.Y. Jets
‘In all likelihood it will be the defences that decide this one – or more specifically how each young quarterback handles the complications thrown at him. Ryan’s defence is a confidence-killing 5-1 when facing a rookie quarterback and likes to employ aggressive man-to-man coverage, while the Bills D was no slouch facing both the Patriots and Panthers.’
Bronx native Marrone takes winding path to Bills sideline
‘While out at a local pub with Northeastern colleagues, Marrone wrote on a paper napkin what he was looking for in a girlfriend and it got passed around the table. When the napkin got to a woman named Colleen, she said, “Oh my Gosh, I’ve got the perfect girl for you. She was my roommate at [Boston College] and is in law school now in Memphis. You’ve got to meet her.”‘
Rookie QBs will be key to Jets’ showdown with Bills
‘Bills 17, Jets 3.’
C.J. Spiller, Stevie Johnson present tough matchups for Jets against Buffalo
‘”We had Spiller and all those guys running all over us [last year],” Wilkerson said in a radio interview this past week.’

5 things to watch in Bills – Jets
‘After struggling with this all week, in the end it was the Bills’ pass rush combined with Geno Smith’s tendency to hold on to the ball too long that helped make the decision. At this point in their careers Manuel seems just a bit more polished and is prone to less mistakes than Smith, but both have shown positive early signs. Smith has made some very nice deep throws and could challenge the Bills’ secondary but once again, holding on to the ball too long — much like Cam Newton did in Week Two — might be too much to overcome if the Bills’ pass rush is working.’
