‘”I haven’t been called kid in awhile,” Weeden told Buffalo reporters this week. “I wish they would. I’ve heard the old man jokes for the last five years. If I heard kid, I wouldn’t even know how to react.”‘

‘”This league’s about scoring and preventing scores,” said Browns coach Pat Shurmur. “So your challenge always is to do that. We’ve seen teams walk up and down the field at times. Then you start talking about how’d they do in the red zone? Did they eliminate the score? Did they score on defense? We found a way to be good in some areas.”‘

‘”I’d be on the PGA Tour. I grew up playing golf, then I didn’t do as much through high school and college. Now I’m getting back into it. If I couldn’t be in the NFL that definitely would be my dream job. It’s a competitive game but it’s relaxing enough where you can enjoy it sometimes a little more than football. Maybe a victory isn’t as sweet. You don’t have to grind quite as hard physically. But I like all the mental aspects of golf. You’ve got to like a sport where you can drink a beer, be outside and still compete.”‘

‘”It is the responsibility of the county executive, as the duly authorized representative of the people of Erie County, to conduct these negotiations with the Buffalo Bills and New York State,” Poloncarz said in a written statement provided by his spokesman. “When we have reached the appropriate stage and the negotiations are completed, at that point the Legislature will have the opportunity to either accept or reject the negotiated agreement.”‘

‘”It was really just challenging guys to play up to the potential we have,” Williams said of the pregame speech he delivered before last Sunday’s game against Kansas City. “Don’t hide behind a piece of paper that says ‘Hey, we have a good team on paper and everything is just going to fall into our lap.’ Everybody in the NFL has good players whether they’re household names or not, they’re in the NFL. So you have to make things happen.”‘

‘And when it comes to running back C.J. Spiller, who’s averaging over 10 yards per carry in two games? “He’s fast, fast, fast,” Carder said.’

‘McKelvin is a defensive back for the Bills. Of more concern to the Browns, is he is also the Bills’ punt returner. McKelvin has returned four punts this season for 125 yards. One was for 88 yards and a touchdown against the Chiefs last week. Even discounting that runback, McKelvin is averaging better than 12 yards a return.’

‘”They’re pretty big,” center Alex Mack said. “They’ve got a really good stout rushing team in there, and they have some good edge rushers. We got challenges in the run and pass.”‘

‘”He’s an explosive guy,” Shurmur said. “I’ve got to believe he’s one of the fastest guys on their team and if not in the league. When he gets some space, and they do a good job on offense of giving their runner space, he has a chance to turn good ones into great ones and great ones into touchdowns. Some of it has to do with what they do on offense. They do a very good job coaching their guys and some of it has to do with his skill and ability.”‘

‘Spiller will be a tough task to stop, one of the reasons he is averaging over 10 yards a carry. He’s just the second player to do so in his first two games since the great Jim Brown averaged more than 11 back in 1963. It’s because the Bills like to move him around and cause odd-man mismatches.’

‘”It’s great to be mentioned in the same breath as one of the greatest ever to play the position,” Spiller said. “But that means nothing to me. I don’t get caught up with who’s in the stands or who’s not in the stands. None of that stuff really matters.”‘

‘”He’s a smart guy, but quarterbacks are pretty smart people,” Jauron said Thursday. “He’s a very competitive guy and he’s a talented guy. He’s not the tallest quarterback, but he’s not short either. He’s very strong, (a) very strong runner. He can run the ball and he will run the ball. He has done a really good job, a very good job for them. They’ve done a nice job with him too.”‘

‘”I think their scheme is good,” Browns coach Pat Shurmur said. “They spread the field; they get the ball out of his hands extremely well. They mix up the launch points, like we all do and he does a good job of scrambling and getting yards. Most long drives require the quarterback to do something with his feet, whether it’s gain some yards or move around in the pocket and throw the ball away. You can see with their long drives that he does that.”‘
