‘The first-team offense looked good on its second drive of the game where Buffalo went 49 yards on just five plays. Fred Jackson ripped off two long runs and Fitzpatrick threw a pretty pass to David Nelson to setup a short touchdown run by Jackson. Fitzpatrick also had a nice throw to Stevie Johnson over the middle one and a nice deep out to Donald Jones, but otherwise he was inaccurate. On the plus side the Bills had no penalties.’

‘The Bills’ starting offense managed one touchdown and seven first downs in seven possessions. The Bills had to punt five times in the first half against a Steelers defense that last year allowed both the fewest points and the fewest yards in the league.’

‘Fitzpatrick completed just 7-of-18 passes for 89 yards while playing the first half against the Steelers’ starting defense. He wasn’t even close on a few throws and, at times, he played more like a shaky rookie trying to nail down a roster spot rather than to his reputation as deep-thinking, accurate passer.’

‘Fitzpatrick played the entire first half, completing seven of 18 passes for 89 yards with no touchdowns and no turnovers. Fitzpatrick’s final numbers are a bit deceiving as he was the victim of some dropped passes and missed assignments. However, Fitzpatrick did struggle to complete passes in the teeth of the Steelers famed zone blitz. If the Bills are going to be a true playoff contender this season, Fitzpatrick will have to make first down passes as the pass rush closes in on him. The offensive line will struggle, so it will be up to the entire offence to avoid third and long situations at all costs.’

‘The Bills (No. 19) dropped to 0-3 this preseason while continuing a trend of familiar struggles on both offense and defense. And that’s not what coach Chan Gailey was looking for this week in expressing a desire to see more consistency from his starters.’
