‘ How do you put one of these guys in the Hall of Fame ahead of some very fine long-tenured head coaches who aren’t in the Hall of Fame? Chuck Knox, Jimmy Johnson and Don Coryell are three examples. Knox won 186 games (ninth best all-time) and rebuilt three different teams into division winners. He never got to a Super Bowl. Jimmy Johnson built one of the greatest teams of all time, the ’90s Cowboys. I think he’s Hall-worthy. , but I don’t think it will happen. Too many voters count his lack of huge success in Miami against him. It’s hard to put an assistant ahead of those two, in my view, or a bunch of other good head coaches. Then there’s Don Coryell, who was a finalist last year and who unquestionably ranks ahead of any assistant. Carson and Arnsparger contributed greatly to the Hall inductions of Noll and Shula, respectively. That’s their reward, as far as Hall recognition is concerned.’
