Nation Weighs In On Bills Draft
‘We thought we would provide a comprehensive listing of what the rest of the media pundits across the country thought of Buffalo’s 2008 draft class. Appearing in alphabetical order by affiliation, here are the draft grades from coast to coast.’
The more DEs, the merrier: Ellis was smart pick by Bills
‘So, while Buffalo’s first two picks — top-round cornerback Leodis McKelvin and No. 42 overall choice James Hardy (wide receiver) — in the draft are understandably grabbing all the attention from fans and media right now, don’t be surprised if Ellis steps in and has an immediate impact on a defensive line that was frighteningly weak at applying pressure last season. Four ends who are at least semi-competent are better than three, that’s for sure, and the Bills were smart to recognize they needed help in that area.’
Special teams reload
‘”Since I’ve been here, the scouts have been indoctrinated to look for and see what those guys bring to the table on special teams,” April said. “A lot of these guys really made that a priority to check on the players, not just as offensive or defensive players, but as what they can do for us on teams. We’ve got a bunch of good players in the draft for special teams. I think it’s really going to be beneficial to us.”‘
Losman not the solution, even as No. 2
‘Losman had his chance as a starter and failed miserably. I doubt there’s much faith in him around the league as even a backup. I don’t think he’s one of the top 50 quarterbacks in the sport. It’s folly to suggest he could lift the Bills to a playoff spot if Edwards goes down. Losman has been a consistent failure in the big games, and on the road.’
NFL draft recap: AFC East
‘The common denominator in all of Buffalo’s free agent and top draft picks: they make the team bigger physically across the board.’
Experts size up AFC East teams’ drafts
‘Casserly and Brandt like what the Bills did with their first two picks, taking defensive back/return specialist Leodis McKelvin and wide receiver James Hardy.’
Local players chase NFL slots
‘For Brockington, the dream formally starts today, when the former Palmyra High and Notre Dame linebacker leaves for Buffalo as a free agent hoping to win a job playing special teams with the Bills.’
NFL happily follows the money
‘And barring unforeseen circumstances, the Bills will be in Toronto, in part or in whole, for a long, long time.’
Omon’s shot with Buffalo
‘Northwest Missouri State running back Xavier Omon got a lot of attention around Buffalo for a sixth-round draft pick this past weekend.’
Bills pick Fine in 4th round
‘He’s played in high school state championship games, and college bowl games, but Derek Fine is getting ready to step foot on to football’s biggest stage – the NFL.’
