Holcomb to start at QB over young, struggling Losman
‘The decision to enact the switch, after Losman started the first four games of the year, was made Tuesday, with the quarterbacks apprised of the plan. The Bills, 1-3 and unable to generate much offensive rhythm, host the Miami Dolphins on Sunday afternoon.’
Inside slant
‘Let the guessing game begin.’
Strategy and personnel
‘In the team’s three-game slide, the defense has allowed eight rushing plays of 20 or more yards and 17 of 10 or more yards, fueling the team’s plunge to 31st in the league against the rush. Buffalo is allowing 172.3 yards per game on the ground, nearly 72 yards more per game than a season ago.’
Notes, quotes
‘The Bills, who rank 31st in the league against the run, face a stiff test Sunday against Miami rookie Ronnie Brown, the second overall pick in last April’s draft. Brown rushed for 132 yards and a TD in Miami’s 27-24 win over Carolina on Sept. 25. Two weeks ago, the Bills gave up 128 yards rushing and a TD to Tampa Bay rookie Carnell “Cadillac” Williams. “I see him as a young, tough, gifted running back,” Bills LB London Fletcher said of Brown. “He has some patience and you often don’t see that in a young guy. You can tell he’s been coached well and he has a good feel for finding the creases.”‘
Bills may start Holcomb on Sunday
‘Maybe out of some miracle, Kelly Holcomb can step in and lead this 1-3 Bills team to the playoffs. However, believing that he can lead a team to a championship is nothing more than a pipe dream. At the moment, the Buffalo Bills don’t have an offensive line or a defense capable of orchestrating a Super Bowl run. The only specific position to really produce great things this year has been at running back. Willis McGahee has run for 375 yards despite not getting the football nearly enough.’
Miami (2-1) at Buffalo (1-3)
‘Buffalo has just two touchdowns in its last 14 quarters, and managed only 208 yards against the Saints. The Bills are 31st in the NFL in total offense, averaging 219.8 yards per game.’
Mularkey mum on starting QB
‘Asked if he had taken a step back Wednesday, Mularkey gave a terse response: “You can take it as a step back or you can take it as a step forward. I don’t care how you take it.”’
The Controversy Begins
‘”I’m not going to talk about starters at any position for either team today," Mularkey said following Wednesday’s practice.’
Edwards Ruled Out with Shoulder Injury
‘Lauvale Sape, who has been inactive for the first four weeks of the season, will likely be activated in Edwards’ absence.’
Anyway You Spell It, Bills Are In Trouble
‘Out of respect for the sacred sport of Scrabble, I’ll continue on with this column by noting my word scores.’
Mularkey Will Not Commit To Starting Losman
‘WGR Sportsradio 550’s Paul Hamilton has heard rumblings that Holcomb may get the start Sunday against Miami.’
Bills DT Edwards to miss Sunday’s game against Dolphins
‘Coach Mike Mularkey didn’t say if Edwards will require surgery on the shoulder. Edwards had an MRI on the shoulder Monday.’
Home warrior
‘”I’m sure there are bigger Bills fans – but I’m there every week at 9 in the morning, and I’m there after the game ends,” he said. “And I’ve never had a drink of alcohol at a game … and I’m the loudest one there.”‘
