Week 3: Bills-Broncos Postgame Quotebook
Coach Gregg Williams:
"We made some strides as a team playing against a very good team, but we made too many mistakes early and didn't make the critical plays down the stretch."
Game Notebook at Denver
With his first catch of the game, Peerless Price extended his streak of games with a reception to 42 which tied Elbert Dubenion for the fourth longest streak in Bills history. Moulds also extended his club record streak of games with a catch to 68 games.
Bills Rally Comes Up Short
Quarterback Drew Bledsoe drove the Bills offense 70 yards in 1:27 and threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Eric Moulds to make the score 28-23 with 1:12 left. But Denver's Rod Smith recovered the onside kick to end Buffalo's hopes of a dramatic fourth quarter come-from-behind victory.
A rocky go in Denver
‘OK, the Bills may not be on the brink of greatness, but they’re on the brink of goodness, and that was evident in Denver’s shiny new palace.’
Broncos finding a way to win, Bills searching
‘”The bottom line for us offensively is that we have to get better at starting games,” Bledsoe said. “We’re digging holes for ourselves and leaving ourselves with problems at the end of games.”‘
The Two-Minute Read
‘The Bills are firmly committed to establishing balance in their offense, and they will continue to try to run the ball. I’m starting to wonder whether they should even bother.’
Buffalo Bills report card
‘Another competitive effort but better team won.’
Buffalo may be losing, but not without a fight
‘But if the Bills keep playing like they have through the first three weeks of the NFL season, Buffalo will continue to be a hot ticket on entertainment value alone.’
Ugly, but it’s 3-0
‘"We knew what he was capable of doing," Reese said of facing Bledsoe, who finished 27-for-41 for 283 yards with two TDs. "We feel fortunate."’
Bledsoe was a handful
‘The Buffalo Bills managed only 39 rushing yards on 14 carries Sunday, turning them into a one-dimensional team, as Denver had hoped. But with Bills quarterback Drew Bledsoe a remaining factor, the Broncos were on edge until the end.’
McGlockton provides enough comic relief
‘The return occurred with 3:38 left in the first quarter, with the contest having taken on an ugly tone to that point: scoreless, with the two teams combining for 41 penalty yards and 49 offensive yards.’
Griese in ‘four’ the count, as he eyes 4-0 start
‘In Sunday’s key fourth-quarter drive against the Bills, Griese completed six of eight attempts for 62 yards and the touchdown pass to Smith.’
This time, it’s Portis’ turn to take charge
‘Anderson rushed for 28 yards on seven carries and the Broncos finished with 163 rushing yards and 342 total yards of offense.’
Two Watson penalties aid his ‘ex’
‘He committed two defensive penalties to keep Denver drives alive, and he had been part of the Bills defense that allowed Brian Griese’s first-and-five touchdown pass to Rod Smith with 2 minutes, 39 seconds remaining to put the game away.’
